Analysis the power of love in E L James’s novel “Fifty Shades of Grey”

A. Background of study

Literature is a depiction, expression and imagination of life. In literature there are

many ideologies, one of them is romanticism. Romanticism is a flow in literary works

that prioritizes feelings. This romanticism arises as a reaction to rationalism that

considers all the secrets of nature to be investigated and explained by human reason. It is

regarded as an ideology that is more concerned with the use of beautiful language,

dreaming into the realm of dreams. This romance ideology emphasizes the expression of

feelings as the basic embodiment of the author’s thoughts so that the reader is touched by

his emotions after reading the expression of his feelings. In order to realize his thoughts,

the author uses the form of the most beautiful and perfect expression. In the romance

ideology is usually associated with the problem of love because the problem of love does

evoke emotions and even power can be born because of love.

In the literature there are also various types of works, such as novels. The novel is

a long prose or essay containing a series of stories of one’s life with those around him by

highlighting the nature and nature of each actor.

Each literary work has its own period or ideology. Such a novel developed since

the Victorian period to modern today. Novel Fifty Shades of Gray is a modern novel that

was first released in 2011 by E L James. This novel contains the romance ideology
because the author, E L James, describes the element of romance in every imagination of

the language that he wrapped in this novel. Therefore, the author is interested in

conducting research in E L James’s novel “Fifty Shades of Gray” for wanting to analyze

and describe the power of love in that novel. And then, to describes about the

characteristic of power of love experienced by main characters in that novel.

B. Research question

1. What are the characteristic of power of love experienced by main characters in novel

E L James’s “Fifty Shades of Grey”?

2. How is the power of love portrayed in novel E L James’s “Fifty Shades of Grey”?

C. Objective of study

Based on the problem above, the objective of this study are to find the

characteristics of power of love experience by main character especially the writer focus

on main character that is Anna and Christian and then to know the portrayal of the power

of love in novel E L James’s “Fifty Shades of Grey”?

D. Significance of study

This research may become one of the references for other students in studying

literature. The writer intends to give the information to students who want to know about

the power of love in novel E L James’s “Fifty Shades of Grey”. The writer hopes that the

information that is included in this writing will become good information for the students,

society and other people who want to analyze the power of love of characters through

characterization.
E. Previous study

(Nurfadillah: 2014 at English literature student of Adab and Humanities faculty in

Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar) in his thesis the power of love in Lauren

Kate’s novel “Fallen in Love” aims at finding out the three couples in the Lauren Kate’s

novel “Fallen of Love” have same power of love to love their beloved. However, they

have different characteristics in love. And also, there are two characteristics power of

love experienced by three couples in that novel.

Murdiono (2011) in his thesis love and hate aspects in drama “Romeo and Juliet”

by William Shakespeare. His thesis aims at finding out the love and hate aspect in that

drama. The result of that research states that love aspects are more dominant than hate

aspects. This is marked by the death of the protagonist, Romeo and Juliet by committing

suicide. They committed suicide because the feeling of their deep love to teach other.

F. Theoretical approach

1. Power of love

According to Anderson (2011:315), power is the capability of person to influence

another person of other people. In addition, Emerson in Anderson (2011:315) says the power

is a social-relational concept that can be understood only in relation to other individuals in

the group.

Naugle (2010:1) says that love indeed is an ultimate, if not the ultimate, human

concern. It is the universal principle undergirding all human activity, the object of all human

striving, resulting, naturally.

As Kahane (2010:9) explain that power and love stand at right angles and

delineate the space of social change. If we want to get unstuck and to move around this space
– if we want to address our toughest challenges – we must understand and work with both of

these drives.

2. Characteristics power of love (according to Person)

G. Method of research

In this research, the writer will be use a descriptive method to analyze data. Then,

the research data that writer will be use is library research.
