GRAMMAR
Look at the sentence below. This structure is called the second conditional. Answer
questions a-d.
The second (2nd) conditional is the present hypothetical conditional. Hypothetical means
imaginary or not real. Use the second conditional when you want to imagine that the
present, right now, is different than it really is. You wish that your present situation, or
someone else’s present situation was different.
You can use the second conditional to give advice, give reasons why you can’t do
something, ask hypothetical questions, or generally imagine that your life is different.
Giving Advice: “If I were you, I would … “
The most common use of the second conditional is giving advice to people. You imagine
what you would do if you faced the same decision or situation as someone else.
You can change the order of the clauses. When the if-clause is in the second part of the
sentence, you don’t need to use a comma.
7. Complete the sentences with the correct form of the verbs in brackets.
9. Look at the two pictures. In pairs, discuss and write all the things that she did to
change her appearance.
Which look do you prefer more, before or after? Why?
-He cut his hair, got tattoos, put on glasses and changed the way he dressed
- I preferred the look from before because it looked simpler and more feminine
10. Read some more posts from an advice page. Discuss what advice to give to these people.
WRITING
11. Now write a reply to the posts. Use If I were you, I would/ wouldn’t …
Example:
Dear Cristina,
I think friends are important but If I was you, I wouldn’t change the color of my
hair because of them.
A: Hello Cristina
I would not do it in your place, you must do the things you like, do not do them to fit in with others,
we must always be authentic
B: Dear Ricardo
I think you should not do it, because they do not know if they are actually going to be together for
a long time, it is better not to do something that you may later regret.
C: Appreciable Sandra
I advise you to go out with him and get to know him, since his appearance does not define his
personality.
