SECTION-A
READING (20 MARKS)
1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
Many a time people feel fatigue because of poorly designed workspaces. Your desk, your chair,
your computer and keyboard - the placement, height, and angle of each of them - play a crucial
role in preventing muscle and eye strain. That is what has given rise to an interest in the study
of ergonomics, it is the applied science of equipment design at the workplace. Ergonomics is
intended to reduce fatigue and discomfort for people sitting and working in offices.
So why does it make sense for organizations to follow ergonomic principles? In a recent study,
it has been found that over 60% of individuals diagnosed with Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) had
received no training in strain injury at their offices and another 30% had received incorrect
ergonomic advice.
Another interesting find has been that employees who turn up to work in spite of being in pain
can cause massive productivity losses amounting to thousands of dollars annually. Research
findings have shown that most offices in India are operating with furniture that is a mismatch to
the highly networked work culture that exists and there is hardly any awareness among employees
about ergonomics and how it impacts them. This has resulted in an alarming 71% of employees
suffering from rapidly spreading Musculo Skeletal Disorders (MSD). The symptoms are back
pain, shoulder pain of varying intensity, leading to lowering of productivity of employees at
work.
To counter this problem, some companies have created volunteers who are part of a 'train and
trainers' initiative. They act as custodians of their bays and monitor their colleagues' postures and
advise them on a day-to-day basis. Talking about the part that employees can do to make their
workplaces comfortable, some experts say that from an employee's perspective having knowledge
of what is a safe working position, and what are the right ways of relieving fatigue, how the
current set-up can be optimized, what simple solutions can be incorporated, can go a long way
in creating a stress-free environment with healthy employees.

2. Read the passage given below carefully.
(1) More than one hundred definitions of sustainable development exist, but the most widely used
one is from the World Commission on Environment and Development, presented in 1987. It
states that sustainable development is "Development that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Sustainable
development promotes the idea that social, environmental and economic progress are all
attainable within the limits of our Earth's natural resources. Sustainable development approaches
everything in the world as being connected through space, time and quality of life.
(2) In terms of the world being connected by space, consider the following: Pesticides sprayed in
Chile have the potential to harm fish stocks off the coast of Japan. The air pollution we emit in
Los Angeles affects the quality of air in Asia. On the flip side, clean air practices on one
continent will positively impact air quality across the ocean.
(3) The Earth's connection to time is demonstrated in how we, today, are either benefiting or
suffering from the choices of our grandparents and other ancestors. Their decisions about how to
farm their land, for example, continue to impact the agricultural practices of today. Looking to the
future, the economic choices we make and policies we endorse today will be the ones affecting
our children and grandchildren as adults.
(4) Sustainable development constantly seeks to achieve social and economic progress in ways that
will not exhaust the Earth's finite natural resources. The needs of the world today are real and
immediate, yet it's necessary to develop ways to meet these needs that do not disregard the
future. The capacity of our ecosystem is not limitless, meaning that future generations may not be
able to meet their needs the way we are able to now.
(5) The world's resources are finite and growth that is unmanaged and unsustained will lead to
increased poverty and decline of the environment. We owe it to future generations to explore
lifestyles and paths of development that effectively balance progress with awareness of its
environmental impact. In order to preserve the future, we must appreciate the interconnectedness
between humans and nature at all levels. Sustainable development practices can help us do this,
and through education and building awareness, preserving the future is within everyone's reach.
On the basis of your reading of the above passage, complete the following : (8 marks)
(a) What is sustainable development?
(b) How is everything in the world connected? Give one example.
(c) How is the Earth's connection to time demonstrated?
(d) What will unmanaged growth lead to?

4. Vehicular Pollution
Increased vehicular traffic, haphazard urban settlements and poor roads lead to frequent traffic snarls
and road accidents as also vehicular pollution, which has assumed alarming proportions. It is
estimated that nearly 40,000 people succumb to air pollution every year in major cities of India.
High-level emissions of smoke and poisonous gases cause global warming and depletion of the
ozone layer, affecting the weather pattern. Summers are wanner and prolonged. Poisonous
particulate matter in the air leads to respiratory and eye-related problems. Even a rise in coronary
cases linked to an increase in pollution levels, was reported.
Thus, it is imperative that pollution control norms are implemented and defaulters booked.

A LUCKY FIND
The money I had received on my 14th birthday, sufficed to buy the complete Harry Potter series.
I read it non-stop right through the weekend, but even by Sunday evening 1 had not finished the
last few pages of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. I carried the book to school and
showed it around on the school bus. When we reached school and began asking for the book, no
one owned up to having it.
I decided to put up a notice on the notice board and offered the finder a handsome treat of a
double ice cream and cold drinks alongside.
On the second day, a junior from the NCC squad walked up with the book. He had found it
thrown in the bushes behind the school garden. I thanked the boy very much and kept my
promise. My week's pocket money was gone in treating him. I felt a sense of relief as I put the
book safely back in my school bag.
For the first time I realized what it feels to lose something that is dear to oneself. That evening,
I finished the rest of the book and went to bed dreaming of Dumbledore and the Hogwarts
School.

As a team member of the special invitees honoured with India's Bravery Award, the high point of
our felicitations included a visit to Rashtrapati Bhavan and an audience with the President of
India. As soon as we entered the premises I was struck by the imperial and awe-inspiring facade
of the building and its plush interiors. The President congratulated US. We then posed for a group
photo with the dignitary and thereafter gorged ourselves on the delicious spread of cats. Finally,
I walked up to the President and requested him for his autograph. The evening ended with a

another to be in the front line. Policemen were busy in dealing with the foreigners whom they
suspected to be non-Hindus. Temples should be quiet and peaceful. But the reality is just the
opposite. It is a common scenario that we have in our temples. We can see unruly devotees,
mismanagement and chaos all around in some of the prominent religious places. Beggars and
other self-proclaimed gods present a miserable scene all around. If wc want to be called religious
in the true sense, we must maintain and respect the sanity of the temples. We must be pure and
