ADSL TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

What is ADSL?

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL): is a form of DSL, a data communications

technology that enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines than a
conventional voiceband modem can provide. It does this by utilizing frequencies that are not
used by a voice telephone call. A splitter - or microfilter - allows a single telephone connection
to be used for both ADSL service and voice calls at the same time. Because phone lines vary in
quality and were not originally engineered with DSL in mind, it can generally only be used
over short distances, typically less than 5km.

How to connect your network components:

1- AC POWER ADAPTER: Plug the ADAPTER into to wall electricity outlet and plug
the connector to your ADSL router.

2- THE RESET MICRO SWITCH: This is used to reset the ADSL router to the default
settings by pressing it for 7 sec then release … in case you have a problem opening the
router interface page or you forgot the username and password required to open the
interface page.

3- Ethernet PORTS: This ports are to connect between the ADSL router and the NIC
(Network Interface Card) installed in your computer via the Ethernet cable.
4- USB (Universal Serial Bus): It's to connect between your USB modem or router as
shown in the figure and the USB port in your computer via the USB cable.

5- LINE or ADSL: Connect the telephone wire as shown in the figure between "Modem"
in the ADSL Splitter and the router.

6- ADSL SPLITTER: ADSL filter is an analog low-pass filter installed between analog
devices (such as telephones or analog modems) and a POTS telephone line, in order to
prevent interference between such devices and a DSL service operating on the same
line. Without DSL filters, signals or echoes from analog devices at the top of their
frequency range can result in reduced performance and connection problems with DSL
service, while those from the DSL service at the bottom of its range can result in line
noise and other issues for analog devices.

The splitter has one input (LINE) and two outputs (PHONE, ADSL or Modem)
here is how to connect it the right way:

1- (LINE) connect it to the main line direct from the box and if it's not possible
connect it from the main wall telephone outlet.

2- (PHONE) connect it to the telephone device.

3- (ADSL or MODEM) connect it to your USB modem or Router.

7- RJ 45 & RJ 11: RJ 45 is the connector used for standard Ethernet cables,
RJ 11 is the connector used for standard telephone wires.

How to RJ your own Ethernet cable and telephone wires:

1st you need to have the following:
1-

2- A standard Ethernet cable 100BASE-TX.

3- Tow RJ 45 connectors.

Ethernet Cable Instructions:

1. Pull the cable off the reel to the desired length and cut. If you are pulling cables through holes,
it's easier to attach the RJ-45 plugs after the cable is pulled. The total length of wire segments
between a PC and a hub or between two PC's cannot exceed 100 Meters (328 feet) for
100BASE-TX and 300 Meters for 10BASE-T.
2. Start on one end and strip the cable jacket off (about 1") using a stripper or a knife. Be extra
careful not to nick the wires, otherwise you will need to start over.
3. Spread, untwist the pairs, and arrange the wires in the order of the desired cable end. Flatten
the end between your thumb and forefinger. Trim the ends of the wires so they are even with
one another, leaving only 1/2" in wire length. If it is longer than 1/2" it will be out-of-spec and
susceptible to crosstalk. Flatten and insure there are no spaces between wires.
4. Hold the RJ-45 plug with the clip facing down or away from you. Push the wires firmly into the
plug. Inspect each wire is flat even at the front of the plug. Check the order of the wires.
Double check again. Check that the jacket is fitted right against the stop of the plug. Carefully
hold the wire and firmly crimp the RJ-45 with the crimper.
5. Check the color orientation, check that the crimped connection is not about to come apart,
and check to see if the wires are flat against the front of the plug. If even one of these is
incorrect, you will have to start over. Test the Ethernet cable.
How to RJ your main telephone wire:
1st you need to have the following:

2- You need to get the end point of the wire direct from the box in the street to your place.

3- A RJ 11 connector.

Hint: The standard telephone wire from the box in the street includes a pair of wire and in RJ 11

You will find 4 pins connect the wire to pin 2 and pin 3.

8- NIC (Network Interface Card): in order to connect between the ADSL Router
and your computer via the Ethernet cable you must have a NIC installed in
your computer and ready to use.

9- USB (Universal Serial Bus): In order to connect the USB modem to your
computer via the USB cable you must have an USB port in your computer and
have the USB modem software to be ready to install it.
Line Physically Down troubleshooting:

1- Make sure you are connecting your Network components correctly as shown in the
above guide.
2- Do you have a Router or a USB Modem?
For USB Modems:
Does both the ADSL led and the power led USB go off?
If yes => Unplug the USB cable from the USB port in your computer and plug it back and
restart the Computer and check again if both the power led and the ADSL led became steady
green or not.

Check from another USB port in your computer and still not working please visit the nearest
TE Data branch to check it for you.

If the power led is steady green and the ADSL led is off or flashing: Unplug the USB cable
from the USB port in your computer and plug it back and restart the Computer and check
again if the ADSL led became steady green or not.

If the problem still exists: You need to click on Start > control panel > add or remove
programs control and uninstall the modem and restart the Computer and unplug the USB
cable and reinstall it again and make sure to choose PPPOE and VPI=0 and VCI=35 and plug
the USB cable in the USB port in your computer when the setup asks you to plug it and type
the correct username & password you received from TE Data.

And for more details about how to install the modem check this link:

If the problem still exists: Remove the splitter and all telephone devices connected to your
telephone line and connect the USB Modem directly to the main line direct without
splitter and if it's not possible connect it from the main wall telephone outlet and
check again if the ADSL led became steady green or not..

telephone devices connected to your telephone line and connect the Telephone device to the
main line direct without splitter and if it's not possible connect it from the main wall telephone
outlet and check if the voice is working or not.

If the voice is not working: connect the Router or USB Modem to the main line direct without
splitter and if it's not possible connect it from the main wall telephone outlet and check if the
