Please find attached an example of how to begin drafting your bullet points for your argument /

solutions paper. Remember my example is predicated on my arguing in favor of legalizing

Euthanasia. You will need a minimum of 3 opposition and refutation relationships in your paper,
which is why I have 3 here. You may want to draft in the vicinity of 5 as you may find some that
your generate may not be useful.

In our ZOOM MTG on Tuesday 6/9, we will discuss my examples and perhaps any of yours you
want to as well as construction of the paper.

You will need 5 new sources regrading your topic. They are as follows:1) A Ted Talk; 2) something
from a .gov site;3) a periodical, which is nothing more than a magazine, say The New Yorker, The
Atlantic, Psychology Today or Time. To find periodicals go to the WSU library web page and use
the link to Databases; once there, click the All Databases box and when it drops down find the link
to periodicals; 4)lastly, on the library web page below the link to databases is a link to Journals find
a journal article that contributes to your research as well; 5) a new database article. Thats 5.

You will use 3 sources ( any you like ) from your first paper; remember we have established you
will be able to condense and use some of your first paper where the argument strategy asks your
to make your case.

That will mean a minimum of 8 in-text citations and 8 entries on your Work Cited page.

Eight / New sources and Examples of argument bullet points
example.
Does an individual have the right to seek a “good death” if there is no hope of restoring dignity to
the quality of their life?

*INTRO

(STRONGEST OPPOSITION)

O * It is against God’s will to end one’s life. Life is the gift of God, and to take it violates the
natural order of his intentions.

R * Not all people follow the same God and some have no God at all. If people do not fashion their
lives according to those principles, must they be compelled to follow them when faced with living a
life when the spirit is barely alive?
MAKE THE CASE (MULTIPLE PARAGRAPHS)

*Many humans believe in exercising free will to determine the quality of their life but the denial of
the precepts of euthanasia in allowing that free will to be exercised when one is terminally ill, in
excruciating pain, or in a state of withering and with a quality of life lacking dignity and control, is
antithetical to the right of exercising that free will.

*As human life expectancy increases each decade we find people living longer and longer but the
quality of their lives does not keep pace with that longevity. Often our aging people are leading
lives compromised by lack of mobility, dementia and the inability to carry out the functions to meet
their basic needs.

*These conditions can lead to despair and depression.

*An overreliance on care that is often overwhelmed and unable to serve with quality and to offer
dignity.

*Can put an undo psychological and economic burden on family who may have to manage their
own child rearing as well as the care of their aging family members

*In other instances people are left to deal with chronic pain or terminal conditions that leave them
in ongoing despair and with a debilitating hopelessness.

Some of these conditions like ALS or MS result in a slow withering descent into death that lack
dignity and force

The emotional and financial burden of care of an individual who has no other option but to “wait”
in their suffering to die by family members can only exacerbate the suffering of both parties and
intensify guilt.

SOLUTIONS (MULTIPLE PARGRAPHS)

*A statement of vision and ethics must be formulated and articulated to be presented to public
health policy makers, legislators, and the general public to convey the urgency why euthanasia
must be considered as an option to a compromised quality of life and help to reinvigorate and
national policy that mandates the rights of free will.

*A system of checks and balances needs to be developed to assist any individual who is
overwhelmed with suffering and despair. This system must include the input of health professionals
with diagnosis, mental health professionals who can be sure to assess the resolve and well-being of
the individual, and with family members as well as the individual.

*Studies of other countries and states that investigate the safe- guards and efficacy of euthanasia
rights and the implementation must be done to model what systems work best to serve the
patients.
*In-put from medical and mental health professionals must be solicited that examines both the
pros of such a public health policy but as well the dangers and the cons.

*Funding for such resources must be explored and “normalized” so the work can be done in the
most humane, dignified and respectful way.

LESSER OPPOSTION AND REFUTATION

O * It is against the law to commit suicide. Allowing citizens to break the laws of the land can only
lead to chaos.

R *Many archaic laws remain on the books today that were written for specific challenges of the
times in which they were written. Often our laws evolve with the evolution of society and the
issues that face it. Shouldn’t we think about revising the law that prohibits the right to determine
the quality of one’s life?

O *Advancements in medicine, science and technology happen every day. Because of these
advancements we are able to control pain, find cures, and give hope for those who are terminal or
in despair.

R * The advancements in medicine and science do provide certain hopes, but often they are
responsible only for keeping the machinery of the body alive and can do nothing for the waning or
weary spirit.

CONCLUSION

People,

This is the model to think of for your final bullet draft. I have designated opposition with O and
refutation with R and provided sub headings for clarity: all of which should NOT be in your paper
though you might draft that way. Look to connect your final paper with simple prose that makes
the transitions.
