pigs goldfish number 8 fortune cat acorns

1 In some European countries, pigs have long been a symbol of luck and prosperity. In Germany in
the Middle Ages, people who had many pigs were seen as wealthy. This is associated with the
tradition of saving money in a piggy bank.
2 In China, 8 is a very lucky number. The Chinese think it brings health, wealth and happiness.
They use this number when choosing a date for an important event; for example, a wedding held
on the eighth is believed to bring the newlyweds good luck.
3 The fortune cat Maneki-neko is a Japanese tradition. If the cat is placed near the front door of a
place, it is supposed to invite in good luck.. A cat with the right paw raised brings good fortune
and money, while a cat with the left paw raised welcomes people. A cat with both paws raised is
supposed to provide protection for the home.
4 The goldfish has been a good luck symbol for almost a thousand years. In ancient China, the gold
color of the fish was thought to bring wealth. Traders from Portugal liked this tradition and brought
the fish to Europe in the 1600s, where it became a popular gift for husbands to give to their wives
on their first wedding anniversary. Although goldfish are no longer a common anniversary gift, the
Chinese and Japanese people still think they bring good luck.
5 According to Norse Mythology, acorns and oak trees bring good fortune. The Vikings
associated oak trees with Thor, the god of thunder and lightning. They believed that the acorn,
the fruit of the oak tree, could save them from the anger of Thor, so the Vikings placed an acorn
on their windowsills or near their doors to protect their houses from lightning.
