5. Test Requirements and Quality Assurance

5.1 Inspection and Rejection—While samples may be taken from incoming shipments and checked for
conformance to the requirements of this document by the buyer, the supplier shall accept the responsibility of
making shipments which meet the appropriate specification limits. Shipments may be rejected if they do not
meet specifications.

5.2 Quality Acceptance Criteria—Surface imperfections shall meet the requirements outlined in ISO 3601-3 for
offset, combined flash, offset and parting line projection, backrind, trimming, flow marks, non-fills, and
indentations.

5.3 Supplier Inspection Limits—Inspection limits that fall within the general specification limits for SAE J515 O-
rings may be established for individual compounds approved under this document. Shipments may be
rejected if they do not meet these supplier inspection limits.

5.4 Certification of Quality—Individual companies may establish certification requirements for O-rings
manufactured from SAE J515 materials.

6. Packing and Marking

6.1 Part Identification Number (PIN) for O-Rings to this SAE Document—O-rings to this SAE document shall
be identified by a part identification number consisting of the following:

a. The standard, J515

b. The ASTM/SAE material type (see 4.1 and Table 1)
c. The size designation code

EXAMPLE—For a 90 durometer nitrile O-ring for a –4 (6 mm) tube end face seal fitting, the ordering code
information would be as shown in Figure 6.

7.1 Identification Statement—Use the following statement in test reports, catalogues and sales literature when
electing to comply with this part of SAE J515:

O-rings conform to SAE J515, Specification for Hydraulic O-ring materials properties and sizes for inch and
metric stud ends, face seal fittings, and four screw connections.

7.2 Marginal Indicia—The change bar (l) located in the left margin is for the convenience of the user in locating
areas where technical revisions have been made to the previous issue of the report. An (R) symbol to the left
of the document title indicates a complete revision of the report.

SAE J515 Revised DEC2001

Rationale

a. Modified Test Requirements: In 1997 an F16 low temperature brittleness test was added to the
Buna-N compound specification. The rationale for this addition was that previously htere was no low
temperature test specified and the F16 test appeared to be applicable.

It is now believed that the F16 requirement is overly restrictive and does not reflect the functional
requirements for these O-rings.

Based on recommendations of the task group and input from O-ring manufacturers, the proposed
low temperature test requirements follow generally accepted practice for O-rings as used in
hydraulic fitting aplications. Also, the alternate low temperature bend test provides a practical test,
which can be performed on all sizes of stock O-rings. Generally accepted practice is that O-rings
retain sealing properties to 15 to 20 °F below the TR-10 value.

b. Modified Minimum Operating Temperature: Currently there is no ISO standard comparable to SAE
J515, specifically applying to O-rings for hydraulic system connections. We hope to use the SAE
J515 document as the basis for a new ISO standard to fill this void. At the last ISO meeting, this
topic was initiated and it was requested that we consider the existing DIN 3771-3 — Fluid Systems:
O-Rings; Materials, Field of Application document requirements also. For the NBR90 materials, DIN
3771 specifies a minimum operation temperature of –30 °C. This is not the only difference between
the SAE and DIN documents, but addressing this issue now would remove one potential conflict for
the future.

c. Add General Note to Table 2: “For special applications, consult manufacturer for alternate material
compounds.” This note is proposed to emphasize to users that other material compounds are
available for applications involving special fluids and/or environmental considerations.

Relationship of SAE Standard to ISO Standard—Not applicable.

Application—SAE J515 covers the specification for hydraulic O-ring material and properties and sizes
applicable to face seal fittings, metric and inch stud ends, and four-bolt flange fittings. The standard
includes a size code to allow industry and government agencies to order O-ring with a coded part
number.
