El 14 de Mayo de 1940 un ataque aé-

reo alemán destruyó el centro de la ciu -
dad de Rotterdam en tan solo 15 mi-
nutos. Holanda se rindió y la ciudad es-
tuvo ardiendo durante días. 25.000
hogares y otros 11.000 edificios fueron
destruidos y 800 personas perdieron la
vida. Los límites del área devastada re-
ciben el nombre de: 'De Brandgrens· .

En 2006, la ciudad de Rotterdam

decidió llevar a cabo una señalización
física permanente del Brandgrens . El
diseño de West 8 no so lo enfatizaba
la señal ización permanente del
Brandgrens, ofrecía también infor-
mación sobre el contexto histórico.

El diseño dispone una serie de líne -

as de luces en el suelo de las calles
para marcar de manera permanente

el Brandgrens. La iluminación con -

siste en una serie de dispositivos
LEO con una lente de vidrio curvo que
dibuJa un icono representando la ciu -
dad en llamas. la silueta de un bom-
bardero Heinkel y el contorno de los
brazos alzados por la desesperación
y la cabeza del monumento de Zad -
kine. Este icono le permite a uno
comprender que este bombardeo fue
un acto inhumano y perverso que solo
trajo consigo muerte y destrucción.

Se realizan dos iconos diferentes .

Uno rojo que señala el área de la ciu -
dad destruida y uno verde que seña -
la la destrucción causada por fuego
·amigo· en el Noordereiland.

El 14 de Mayo del 201 O, exactamen-

te 70 años después del bombardeo.
se ha terminado la señalización per-
manente desvelando el 'Brand-
grenssteen ' que ofrece información
sobre el bombardeo.

On May 14 1940 a German bomb -
ing raid destroyed the city centre
c. of Rotterdam within 15 minutes.
The Netherlands capitulated and
the city was burning for days.
25.000 homes,11.000 other build-
ings were destroyed and 800 in -
habitants lost their lives. The
boundaries of the devastated area
gets a name: ·oe Brandgrens'.
In 2006, the municipality of Rot -
terdam decided to realize a per-
manent phys ica l marking of the
Brandgrens. West 8 designed the
marking that not only empha-
sizes the permanent marking of
the Bran dgrens. but also gives in-
formation about the histo r ical
context.
The design of West 8 constists of
a ground illumninated light line in
the streets to permanent ly ma r k
the Brandgrens. The ground illu -
mination consists of a LEO - fitting
with a curved glass lens which
beams an icon representing the
burning city. the silhouette of a
Heinkel bomber, the contours of
the desperate arms and the head
of Zadkine monument. The icon
makes one aware that the bomb-
ing was a perverse, inhumane act
which brought death and de -
struction.
There are two different icons
made. A red one that marks the
destroyed city centre anda green
icon ma r king the destroying of
·friendly' fire at the Noordereiland.
On the 14th of May 201 0, exactly 70
years alter the bombing, the per-
ma nent ma rki ng is finished with
the unveiling of the 'Brand -
grenssteen'. Which gives infor-
mation about the bombing.
