En modo MPOA Query o Response, el dispositivo “edge” (borde), tanto si es un servidor o estación de
trabajo o un conmutador (o Switch/Router), de nivel 3, intentará enviar el paquete directamente al
otro dispositivo “edge” remoto perteneciente a otra subred. El “sender” descubrirá la dirección
ATM del equipo destino utilizando NHRP. Una vez la dirección remota está resuelta un VC directo
se establece para entregar el paquete de datos.
Pero para que esta técnica de entrega de datos sea posible, la conexión directa entre subredes debe ser
autorizada. Las políticas de decisiones o listas de acceso, normalmente se hacen en los routers.
Aquí tenemos dos redes Subnet A y B entre las cuales se quiere establecer una conexión.
Entre los MPOA Server funciona un protocolo de routing. Cada MPOAS sabe llegar a sus MPOA
Clients. Lo primero es descubrir quien es el MPOA Server que sabe llegar a un determinado cliente
MPOA de otra subred (en este caso la B).

Una vez el cliente de la subred A sabe quien es el router que da servicio a esa subred B,
lanza una petición de conexión hacia ese router, y será ese router quien le dirá cual es la
dirección ATM que debe utilizar para llegar a esa red IP remota determinada.

Finalmente se establecerá una conexión directa SVC entre el Client A y Client B sin pasar
por todo un backbone de routers.
Componentes de MPOA

Una vez cubiertos algunos aspectos acerca de la tecnología y estándares MPOA, veremos
ahora algunos de sus componentes.
De la misma forma que LANE, MPOA especifica una arquitectura que identifica un cliente
y varios servidores. El MPOA Client, como el cliente LANE, representa una estación de
trabajo o un dispositivo ATM “edge”, queriendo entregar tramas o paquetes transportados
en un protocolo de nivel 3.
El MPOA Cnfiguration Server, comunica a los MPOA Clients a que subredes pertenecen.
El MPOA Default Forwarder realiza la gestión de broadcast. También desempeña funciones
de routing entregando paquetes a través de los equipos extremos de otras subredes cuando
el MPOA Client no sabe la dirección ATM del equipo destino. Mediante NHRP resolverá
cual es la dirección ATM del equipo remoto a la cual corresponde con una determinada
dirección IP.
Los router MPOA Server mantienen tablas de routing (utilizando OSPF, EIGRP, RIP, …).
Estos servidores resuelven direcciones ATM de direcciones IP determinadas.

Como se puede apreciar aquí, MPOA, NetFlow y Tag Switching están diseñados para
dirigir ciertas informaciones en diferentes partes de la red. Pueden desarrollar de forma
independiente direcciones a esos requerimientos específicos.
