GRAMMAR LESSON PLAN

Assumptions: The teacher assumes that students know regular- irregular verbs and active
sentences.
Anticipated Problems: The time management can fail because it is limited.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the students

1)will have covered that the main purpose of the passive is to change the focus of attention of
the sentence.
2) will have learnt the grammar structure of “past passive”.
3) will have produced sentences using the structure.
4) will have known where they use the structure in daily life.

WARM-UP
Time: 4 min.
Materials: Pictures
Interaction: T/Ss
What students do: Ss are asked some questions about the picture and they get involved in
lesson with their background knowledge.
Grouping: Whole Class
Aims:
- To motivate students to get to the topic.
- To have students involve in the class.
- To activate their background information.
- To draw their attention to the text beforehand
STEPS

1) The teacher shows a pictures of the NEW SEVEN WONDERS of the WORLD to the
students and asks questions
- “What do you see on the board?”
- “What does these pictures remind you?”
- “Do these pictures have any historical importance?”
- “Do you know the names of the shown pictures?”

2) After asking the questions above, the teacher only takes the opinons of the students ,
she does not answer the questions herself.

3) The teacher asks personal questions to the students to make a link to the pictures
- “Do you like visiting the historical places?”
- “Have you ever visited any historical places?”
- “ where do you want to visit if you have a chance?”
- “ What about the NEW SEVEN WONDERS of the WORLD!!! , do you want to
visit them ?”

4) After collecting their ideas and making connection to the pictures, the teacher makes a
link to the text and distributes it.

LEAD-IN TO CONTEXT

Time: 3 min.

What students do: The students read the text and answer the questions.
Grouping: whole class
Aims:
- To get to the topic/main idea
- To contextualize the grammar rule
- To move into the grammar structure smootly
- To practice the reading skill

STEPS

1)The teacher asks some questions about the reading text ”What is the textabout?”etc.

2) The teacher asks some questions to elicit the sentence.


- What happened with the orders of Shah Jahan?
- What happened in 22 years for Mumtaz Mahal?
- What happened according to Islamic Architecture?, etc.
3) The students answer the questions.
4) The teacher writes the answers of the questions on the board.
ELICITATION
A) MEANING
Time: 2 min.
Materials: board

What Ss do: Ss focus on the meaning of the sentence which includes the grammar item.
Grouping: Whole Class
Aims:
- To clarify the new grammar structure.
- To have students understand the meaning of the new structure.

STEPS
1) The teacher asks questions to clarify the meaning in written sentences on the board
- Did the workers build the Taj Mahal or Are they still building it?
- Did the construction of Taj Mahal finish or Is it still lasting?
- Can we say the construction of Taj Mahal started in the past and finished in the past?
2) The teacher elicits the meaning of the new grammar structure.

B) FORM
Time: 2 min.
Materials: board
Interaction: T/Ss
What Ss do: Ss focus on the form of the sentence which includes the new grammar item.
Grouping: Whole Class
Aims:
- To give students the form of the new structure.
- To have students understand the form of the new structure.

STEPS
1)The teacher asks questions to clarify the form in written sentence on the board
- What is the subject of the sentence?
- What is the main verb of the sentence?
- In which form is the main verb? Is it bare form or is it past participle form?
- What comes after the subject?
2) The teacher elicits the form of the new grammar structure.

C) FUNCTION
Time:2 min.
Materials: cards
Interaction: T/Ss
What Ss do: The students answer some questions about the usage of the grammar point.
Grouping: Whole class
Aims:
-To give students the usage of the new grammar item.
- To have students understand the function of the new grammar item

STEPS

1) The teacher asks “When do we use ‘past passive’ in daily life?


2) The teacher collects answers and gives the function of the new structure.
RESTRICTED USE EXERCISE
Time: 3 min.
Materials: Worksheets
Interaction: T/Ss-Ss/Ss
What students do: Put the verb in parentheses () into the passive voice.
Grouping: Pair and individual work
Aims:
- To restrict the language needed and require the use of the target items
- To practice the grammar point

STEPS

1) The teacher gives the students worksheets by saying “ do you want learn the history of
the ice-cream?”
2) The teacher asks them to answer the questions.
3) The students answer the questions.
4) The students work with their partner to compare the answers.
5) After the students answer the questions, the teacher checks their answers.

AUTHENTIC USE ACTIVITY

Aims:
-To have the students use the language in a communicative way.
-To improve the students’ speaking and writing skills.

STEPS
1) The teacher divides the class into groups of five.
2) The teacher gives a situation.
3) The teacher asks them to make up a conversation with their group members.
4) After making up the conversation , the students come to the board and act it out.
