To be able to print checklists or the full DNV PSC Guide, a PDF reader must be
installed on the computer, for instance Acrobat Reader.
The PSC Guide Wizard has been designed and developed for following
environments, but will also function under other conditions:
• Windows XP
• 96 DPI
Purpose
The DNV PSC Guide Wizard is an effort by DNV to share knowledge with its
customers. Relying on DNV experience can help you pin-point and address
deficiency-prone areas, thus enhancing safe operation and minimize the risk of PSC
detentions.
Your PSC Guide will help you make systematic preparations before a Port State
Control Inspections, by maintaining appropriate shipborne Checklists as a
supplement to the vessel’s own maintenance systems.
The PSC guide is structured into Main Areas, corresponding to different areas
onboard the ship and main IMO regulations. Each PSC Area can have its own set of
up to 20 Checklists, each containing an arbitrary number of Checkpoints.
DNV has pre-selected a generic set of Areas, Checklists and Checkpoints which are
considered to be relevant for most ships. You may use this set unchanged, or alter it
as you consider appropriate for your specific purposes.
Viewing
The blue mid-screen button menus show items which you can probe in
greater detail. Starting from Main Areas, these button menus will eventually
take you down to individual Checklists and editing tools.
Use the top right hand green buttons to step backwards in the PSC Guide.
When in doubt, “Home” will always take you back to the top level.
To familiarize yourself with the DNV PSC Guide, first select “View/Customize
Guide” from the Home screen two-button menu. Then move to the Area of
your interest by clicking the appropriate button. From there, select a
Checklist and open it. You may at any time follow your own steps backwards,
using the green buttons at the top right hand corner of the screen.
Customizing
A new Area or Checklist can be added by clicking the “Add new … “ button,
below the appropriate Area or Checklist menu.
First, go to the Checklist you want to edit. A new Checkpoint can then be
added, by clicking the “Edit” button, immediately below the Checklist. You
may also change the text of any existing Checkpoint. Finally, click “Finish” to
complete the editing.
Note: A Checklist with more than seven Checkpoints will cover more than
one screen. You move between these screens using the numbered buttons to
the right of the Checklist. If you want to make changes in the text of a
Checkpoint, you must first go to the screen which contains that Checkpoint,
and then click “Edit”. To add a new Checkpoint, you must first go to the last
screen of the relevant Checklist.
Delete an Area, a Checklist or a Checkpoint
You can only delete those Areas and Checklists that you have defined
yourself. You can, however, delete any Checkpoint, including those defined
by DNV. You delete an item by clicking “Delete”, below the relevant list – you
will then be asked which item you want to delete.
Note: If you delete an Area or a Checklist, all the items inside the item you
delete will also be irrevocably lost.
Checklists can have illustrations, suggesting what to look for. You may
change the DNV illustrations, or add your own specific photos, drawings or
diagrams to any Checkpoint. Note that pictures must be on jpg format, and
file size should ideally not exceed 500 kb. Pictures will automatically be
scaled to fit within the frame.
To add or change a picture, you must first go to the relevant Checklist. Then
go to the Checkpoint you want to illustrate, using the number buttons
immediately to the right of the Checklist. Then click the “Edit” button,
immediately below the Checklist. Then click “Add” or “Change”, as
appropriate, and select the picture file you want, from your relevant photo
directory. Finally, click “Finish” to complete the editing.
In the Windows top menu bar, click the option “Company Logo”. Then click
“Add Company Logo”, and select the appropriate file containing your logo.
The logo must be on jpg format, and file size should ideally not exceed 500
kb.
Printing
Go to the Home screen and select “Print Guide”. This takes you to the Print
screen, where a row of circular radio buttons lets you specify what you want
to print. Select “Print full Guide”. From the Guide selector panel that now
appears, tick the Guide version you want to print.
You may select only a subset of Checklists from any Area, by clicking the
small plus-sign next to the relevant Area. A sub-menu of Checklists now
appears, to let you tick the one(s) you want to print. To close the sub-menu
and return to the Area panel, simply click outside the sub-menu. Notice that
the Area is then ticked and marked by an asterisk to remind you that only a
subset of its Checklists has been included for printing.
Print posters
Go to the Home screen and select “Print Guide”. This takes you to the Print
screen, where a row of circular radio buttons lets you specify what you want
to print. Select “Print Posters”. From the Poster selector panel that now
appears, tick the Posters you want to print.
For all Print options, there is a “Preview” button to let you inspect the
selection before submitting it to the printer.
In the Windows top menu bar, click “File”. Then click “Open Guide”, and
select the appropriate file from where you have saved it.
You may have received a customized version of the PSC Guide from
somebody else. In the Windows top menu bar, click “File”. Then click “Import
Customized Guide”, and select the received file from where you have saved
it. You may now continue customizing the file for your own purpose.
When you save the imported file, it will be accessible for later work using the
“File” “Open Guide” menus.
You may build a library of PSC Guides for different purposes (e.g. individual
vessels), by saving customized Guide versions under different names.
In the Windows top menu bar, click “File”. Then click “Export Customized
Guide”. In the popup box that appears, click the circular radio button marked
“Export as PSC”. Then specify an informative file name, and save the
customized Guide to the file directory where you want to keep your own PSC
Guide files. This file can be re-opened in the DNV PSC Guide Wizard, for later
editing, using the “Import Customized Guide” function.
This section only applies to personnel managing PSC Guides for several
vessels.
You may export a Guide as an editable file for distribution, to be viewed and
further customized by the recipient. The recipient will need to have the DNV
PSC Guide Wizard installed to edit the file, and Adobe Reader to print it.
In the Windows top menu bar, click “File”. Then click “Export Customized
Guide”. In the popup box that appears, click the circular radio button marked
“Export as PSC”. Then specify an informative file name, and save the
customized Guide to the file directory where you want to keep your PSC
Guide editable distribution files. This file can be re-opened in the DNV
PSC Guide Wizard, for later editing, using the “Import Customized Guide”
function.
This section only applies to personnel managing PSC Guides for several
vessels.
You may export a Guide as a pdf for distribution, to be viewed and printed by
the recipient whenever needed. The recipient will only need to have Adobe
Reader installed – not the DNV PSC Wizard. A file exported in this way cannot
be edited by the recipient.
In the Windows top menu bar, click “File”. Then click “Export Customized
Guide”. In the popup box that appears, click the circular radio button marked
“Export as PDF”. Then specify an informative file name, and save the
customized Guide to the file directory where you want to keep your PSC
Guide frozen distribution files. This file cannot be edited further, so
please take care also to save a copy in the PSC format for later modification.
It is recommended that you use similar filenames (e.g. based on vessel id or
name) for the pdf and the psc versions of a customized Guide.
You may have received a new, udated version of the PSC Guide from DNV. In
the Windows top menu bar, click “DNV”. Then click “Install DNV Updates”,
and select the received file from where you have saved it. The updates may
contain new areas and/or checklists, and/or modified checkpoints. You may
use your old customization(s) of the guide with the new version.
Note: The new installed guide will overwrite the previous version of the
generic guide.
Export Customized Guide as DNV updates
You may export a Guide as a new, updated version of the generic Guide for
distribution. This update may be installed as a new version of the generic
Guide by the recipient. The recipient will need to have the DNV PSC Guide
Wizard installed to install the new generic Guide, and Adobe Reader to print
it.
In the Windows top menu bar, click “DNV”. Then click “Export Customized
Guide as DNV Updates”. In the popup box that appears, specify an
informative file name, and save the updated Guide to the file directory where
you want to keep your distribution files for PSC Guide Updates. This file
can be re-opened in the DNV PSC Guide Wizard, for later installation of
updates, using the “Install DNV Updates” function.
