Antecedentes

La muy amplia variedad de materiales metálicos que se emplean


en una diversidad de ramas industriales, está sometida a
condiciones cada vez mas severas.
Deseablemente, se requiere que funcionen de manera muy
satisfactoria, durante un tiempo lo mas largo posible, a temperaturas
cada vez mas elevadas, ante medios de mayor agresividad química y
debiendo soportar cargas mas intensas.
Asociado a los anteriores requerimientos, además, deben
fabricarse dichos componentes al mas bajo costo y ahora se está
volviendo también, y cada vez más, un requisito indispensable, el que su
elaboración sea de forma amigable con el ambiente y el entorno.
Todo esta evolución en las necesidades demandadas para el
desempeño de los materiales, ha provocado e impulsado la
generación de muy diferentes estrategias dirigidas a incrementar
el desempeño de piezas y equipos industriales.

Una parte especialmente sensible de los materiales metálicos, es
la superficie. En ella se originan y desarrollan fenómenos
tales como la corrosión, el desgaste y la fatiga, que pueden
acortar y acortan la vida útil de estos componentes,
afectando las actividades de la producción industrial e
incluso provocando daños a personas y comunidades.

Piénsese, por mencionar hechos recientes, en los derrames


de productos petroleros en diversos sitios del mundo, que
han provocado daños no sólo a los materiales, sin o al
entorno mismo de la zona y han dificultado, entre otras
cosas, las actividad es de pesca, actividad vital para los
habitantes de las regiones involucradas con esos derrames.

Como se ha hecho público, esos daños en las tuberías han
estado asociados, entre otras cosas, a fenómenos de corrosión
ligados a un insuficiente mantenimiento. En este sentido
conviene señalar que la red de tuberías que transportan
fluidos provenientes de la industria petrolera, es de más de
65,000 kilómetros, lo cual puede dar una medida de la
magnitud de los problemas a resolver.

Sobre la corrosión y sus efectos se han llevado a cabo
estudios en diversos países, como Inglaterra, Estados
Unidos o Japón, y se ha mostrado que los gastos
asociados a esta problemática, son del orden de 3.5 a
4.5% del Producto Interno Bruto, cantidad que en varios
países representa una cifra del orden del gasto educativo
nacional. En nuestro país no se han realizado estudios
detallados sobre los efectos de la corrosión, pero puede
considerarse, con bastante certeza, que el gasto es al
menos, del orden de ese gasto educativo. En cuanto a la
fatiga y el desgaste no existen estudios detallad os al respecto
pero puede estimarse que la suma del gasto por corrosión,
fatiga y desgaste, representan un problema económico digno
de atención, que afectan seriamente componentes e
instalaciones en muy diversas ramas industriales.

Una estrategia que intenta afrontar esos problemas son los
tratamientos superficiales, orientados, por supuesto, a
mejorar sustancialmente el desempeño de la superficie de los
materiales, esfuerzos que se han agrupado en lo que se
conoce como Ingeniería de Superficies.
Existe una variedad amplia de tecnologías para dotar a
la superficie de condiciones que les permitan resistir de
mejor manera todos estos procesos de deterioro.
Desde hace un buen número de años se aplican y se practican
en la industria nacional, procesos tales como el galvanizado
por inmersión en caliente, el niquelado y el cromad o
electrolítico, el anodizado, el uso de diversos tipos de
pinturas ó la aplicación de tratamientos termoquímicos tales
como la carburización o la nitruración.

Con el transcurso de los años se han sumado muchas
propuestas adicionales que pueden incrementar la vida útil
de los componentes industriales y muchas de estas
tecnologías recientes de enorme potencial tecnológico, no se
aplican en la industria.

Podemos mencionar, entre otras, la proyección (rociado)


térmica, el niquelado químico (electroless nickel plating) ,
procesos alternativos por inmersión en caliente, otros
tratamientos termoquímicos tales como el borado, el
aluminizado, procesos combinados como el boroaluminizado
y muchos más.

También se han desarrollado, y se aplican a nivel
internacional, tratamientos superficiales que emplean una
diversidad de fuentes de energía, tales como el tratamiento
con láser, con haces de electrones e incluso con energía
solar, procesos como la deposición física o química a partir
de la fase vapor (PVD y CVD) o los recubrimientos obtenidos
por técnicas de solgel. De todos ellos hay abundante
información en la literatura internacional (2) que dan
evidencia de beneficios importantes en la durabilidad de las
piezas y de mejoras en el rendimiento de las piezas
revestidas o tratadas. (1)

Un aspecto más que conviene señalar es como las
legislaciones ambientales que se han ido generando en
diversos países han influido de forma importan te en la
modificación e incluso, suspensión de algunos tratamientos
superficiales.
Así, en países de la Unión Europea, por señalar un ejemplo,
no está permitido el cromado electrolítico tradicional, por su
alta toxicidad e incluso hay toda una reglamentación
relacionada con el manejo de los residuos de estas industrias y
estos aspectos también han determinad o la sustitución de
algunos procesos, o los desarrollos en muchos de ellos.

Situación y Perspectivas de la Ingeniería de Superficies
en la UNAM y su trascendencia en Iberoamérica

A partir del análisis de la realidad descrita y esbozada en el párrafo


anterior, en la Facultad de Ingeniería se ha creado y está en
proceso de consolidación, el Grupo de Ingeniería de Superficies
donde participan profesores y alumnos tanto de licenciatura
como las de postgrado, que han venido llevando a cabo una serie
de trabajos que incluyen los temas y tecnologías siguientes:

a) Niquelado Químico
b) Proyección Térmica
c) Aluminizado y zinalquizado por inmersión en caliente
d) Tratamientos termoquímicos como borado y galvanizado por
difusión

Se han iniciado también trabajos en los campos del
tratamiento superficial de piezas revestidas mediante láser y
energía solar.

Adicionalmente en la propia UNAM se realizan investigaciones


en el Instituto de Investigaciones en Materiales sobre
procesos CVD y PVD, trabajos sobre procesos de
conversión como el anodizado y el fosfatado y sobre
pinturas, labores sobre tratamientos con energía solar, y
otros trabajos sobre diversos recubrimientos.

Conviene también destacar que existe un grupo de
reconocimiento internacional y de alto grado de madurez,
que desarrolla trabajos en el área de corrosión.

Con este breve repaso a la situación de este tema en la


UNAM se intenta mostrar que existe ya una masa crítica
con experiencia y madurez para desarrollar, de forma
productiva y exitosa, trabajos valiosos y de posibilidades
amplias de aplicación industrial.

Quizá el punto que requiere un reforzamiento en este


sentido, es el generar una adecuada conexión con el
sector industrial que facilite la transferencia de estos
resultados al sector productivo.

Un factor de fortaleza más que conviene señalar para ver con
optimismo el desarrollo y crecimiento de los estudios y trabajos
sobre ingeniería de superficies es que se ha venido trabajando en todos
estos temas con diferentes instituciones de países iberoamericanos.

Así, se pueden mencionar el área de Corrosión y Protección del Centro


Nacional de Investigaciones Metalúrgicas de Madrid, el Departamento de
Ingeniería Química y Metalurgia de la Universidad de Barcelona, España,
el Grupo de Corrosión y Protección de la Universidad de Cádiz, España,
la Escuela de Ingeniería de la Universidad Central de Venezuela,
el Instituto de Investigaciones de Procesos Termomecánicos de la
Universidad Austral de Chile, el Centro Universitario José Antonio
Echeverría de la Universidad de la Habana, Cuba y en el ámbito
nacional, el Centro de Investigaciones en Materiales en Metalurgia y
Materiales de la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo, el
Departamento de Mecatrónica del ITESM campus Aguascalientes y el
Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica del ITESM campus Ciudad de
México.

Algunas de las actividades adicionales a las de investigación
en común que se han realizado con estas entidad es
incluyen la impartición de cursos en forma conjunta, la
realización de estancias de investigación de participantes en
estos temas, la escritura de artículos en común y la
presentación de trabajos en congresos nacionales e
internacionales.

Para un país como el nuestro, el desarrollo de la


Ingeniería de Superficies representa un campo que puede
resultar de particular relevancia, especialmente, en aspectos
como los siguientes:

a) Aumentar la vida útil de piezas y componentes
b) Recuperar piezas con algún grado de deterioro, a costos
más bajos
c) Mejorar el aprovechamiento de materiales nacionales
d) Posibilitar la sustitución de materiales importados o
muy costosos por materiales de bajo costo revestidos e
incrementando el uso de materiales nacionales.
e) La capacitación y actualización de personal en estas áreas
a nivel técnico, de licenciatura y de postgrado.

El planteamiento del crecimiento de esta línea de investigación
es el de poder ir generando acciones tales como un curso
de postgrado iberoamericano sobre Ingeniería de Superficies,
un libro de texto iberoamericano sobre Ingeniería de
Superficies (esta idea ya ha sido planteada al Programa
Universitario de Ciencia e Ingeniería de Materiales de la
UNAM quién ha manifestado su apoyo) para, a mediano plazo,
poder cristalizar la creación del Centro Internacional de
Ingeniería de Superficies y Acabados (CENISA).

COMENTARIOS FINALES.

Se considera que existen ya las condiciones apropiadas y


suficientes de equipamiento, cantidad y madurez de recursos
humanos y de nivel de colaboración internacional, entre otros
factores, para llevar adelante con éxito un proyecto
universitario amplio, en el ámbito de la ingeniería de
superficies, que permita desarrollar tecnologías de aplicación,
con componente nacional, que, además, aproveche de forma
más eficiente los recursos nacionales y que puedan servir para
impulsar el desarrollo y actualización tecnológica de la
industria nacional, el ahorro de divisas, la sustitución de
importaciones y la adecuación a las normas ambientales
nacionales e internacionales en este contexto de globalización.

Algunos aspectos que son de importancia sustantiva para
poder concretar este proyecto y lograr el avance sostenido de
esta línea de investigación son, entre otros:
• el generar mecanismos expeditos de la relación universidad-
industria que ayuden a realizar una transferencia eficiente de
resultados al sector productivo,

• el incrementar la preparación y actualización de los recursos


humanos tanto en el sector universitario como en el
industrial y

• el desarrollo, conjuntamente con las tecnologías de


proceso, de métodos y técnicas de caracterización de
recubrimientos cada vez más precisos y representativos.
