Construction engineers are responsible for the design of construction services, such as
elevators, and building heating or lighting systems. They focus on maximum energy
reduction using new technologies. Civil and construction engineers spend time on site
dedicated to the supervision of the installation of the services they have designed.
The construction industry can be divided into two large
groups: design and execution. Giving rise to a large group of
professionals, such as architects, civil engineers, construction
engineers and civil constructors. Deriving these in many
more, as is the case of technical artists, or technicians of
higher level or university under construction. In a simple
example, as in the case of the construction of a house, the
architect designs the work, the civil engineer calculates the
measures and carries out the necessary evaluation, and the
civil constructor builds it, the latter being the one who takes
most of the time in the field. At any time, if any difficulty
arises, the professionals already appointed meet to plan and
look for the most beneficial solutions.
Civil works tend to contribute to the organization of the territory and its use. The roads that
allow the circulation of means of transport, the dams that help manage water resources, the
bridges that allow to cross a river and the sewage system are some examples of civil works.
In the broad group of civil works, works belonging to geotechnical engineering can be
distinguished (which studies the resistance between particles to guarantee if the soil can
support a certain structure), structural engineering (estimates the resistance of the
elements subjected to loads), transportation engineering and road infrastructure
(specialized in meeting mobility needs) and hydraulic engineering (linked to the execution
of water-related works).

Mining always involves the physical extraction of materials from the earth's crust, often in large quantities to recover
only small volumes of the desired product. That is why it is impossible that mining does not affect the environment, at
least in the area of the mine. In fact, some believe that mining is one of the most important causes of environmental
degradation caused by humans. However, at present, a qualified mining engineer is able to limit the damage to a
maximum and recover the area once the mining operation is completed.
Mining methods are divided into four basic types. First, the
materials can be obtained in surface mines, open pit
operations or other open excavations. This group includes
the vast majority of mines around the world. Secondly,
there are underground mines, which are accessed through
galleries or tunnels. The third method is the recovery of
minerals and fuels through drilling wells. Finally, there is
underwater or dredged mining, which could soon be
extended to deep ocean mining.
There is a great variety of materials that can be obtained
from these deposits. They can be classified as follows:
Metals: Includes precious metals (gold, silver and platinum group metals), steel metals
(iron, nickel, cobalt, titanium, vanadium and chromium), basic metals (copper, lead,
tin and zinc) , light metals (magnesium and aluminum), nuclear metals (uranium,
radium and thorium) and special metals, such as lithium, germanium, gallium or arsenic.
Industrial minerals: These include potassium and sulfur, quartz, high chair, common
salt, asbestos, talc, feldspar and phosphates.
Building materials: They include sand, gravel, aggregates, clays for bricks, limestone and
shales for cement manufacturing. This group also includes roof slate and polished stones,
such as granite, travertine or marble.
