Job Title: Science Technician

Salary: Scale 4

Hours of Duty: Part-Time 18 hours term time

Line management: Senior Science Technician and Head of Science

General:

All appointments are made to support the core business of the school, which is to do with teaching
and learning. Staff should see their role as serving the pupils, teachers, parents and other
employees. The School wishes to portray a good corporate image and quality of service, and this
is an ideal that all staff are expected to try and achieve, in work, attendance, manner and
appearance.

Considerable flexibility is required as well as specific skills. All staff should see their appointment
as part of a team, where all need to co-operate together in a very busy, but friendly environment,
helping to ensure tasks are completed even if not specifically part of their own normal routine. The
list of duties which follow are an indication of what is currently required, but may be subject to
review in line with the changing demands of the school.

It is expected that the person appointed will participate in the staff INSET programme and
appraisal review, and they will be expected to attend departmental and curriculum planning
meetings.

Job Purpose: To assist teaching staff in the organisation and preparation of the materials
and equipment necessary to teach science.

Duties include:
1. To undertake all duties and inter-actions with employees, partner providers and customers
fairly, without unlawful discrimination and with due regard to the Council’s Equality and Diversity
in Employment and Service Delivery Policy.

2. Preparing and setting up apparatus as requested by teaching staff in the Science


Department according to deadlines

3. On a daily basis, checking and replacing basic items in each laboratory, endeavoring to
make safe (or remove from service) items that might be unsafe or hazardous, and to report
these items.
4. Advising teaching staff as appropriate and assisting teaching staff in lessons, if required.
Good communications skills are essential.

5. Clearing away and washing up and replenishing equipment after lessons.

6. Maintain and take care of apparatus and equipment, check laboratory services and
facilities, reporting faults to the Senior technician. This includes ensuring that working
surfaces are cleared of materials and sinks kept clear.

7. Assisting in the organization and maintenance of a system for storage and distribution of
equipment.

8. Assisting the Senior technician as necessary.

9. Co-ordination with the Senior Technician to identify and resolve equipment clashes.

10. Designing and making new apparatus and experiments as required.

11. Caring for plants and animals.

12. Maintaining worksheets including: identifying when worksheets need to be copied,


arranging for copying, filing worksheets and issuing work sheets with apparatus.

13. To help maintain stock control of chemicals and equipment.

14. Monitoring Health & Safety issues and reporting any concerns to the Senior Technician.

15. Any other duties which are in line with the grade and general level of responsibility of the
post

Duties:

holders should not place emphasis on the location of the task within the forgoing job
description. From time to time, the tasks may be varied and the post-holder will be expected
to take on such variations within the constraints of the grade and the level of responsibility
implied in it.
