THE REPUBLICANS HIT ON
THE STRATEGY OF ACTING
AS THOUGH THEY’D WON
THE 2008 ELECTIONS.

Time Magazine has its Man of the Year
Award; I have mine.
There was a bumper crop of candidates
this year, a year marked by one bizarre
turn of events after another.
Who would have imagined, for example,
that President Barack Obama, having
gotten a commitment from oil giant BP
to set aside $20 billion for damages
caused by its oil spill, would be accused
by a Congressman of “blackmail” or
that the Republican Party would call it
a “$20-billion shakedown”? Or that the
lawmaker, Rep. Joe Barton, could be
the ranking GOP member of the House
Energy and Commerce committee?
That’s like letting a practicing alcoholic
teach driver education.
Ultimately, I suppose, if you had to distill
the year’s madness into one award,
you’d have to say that the Man of the
Year is the Republican Party. (That’s
neither a man nor woman, I know. So
sue me.)
The GOP this year accomplished a
feat so extraordinary as to beggar the
imagination. Nothing like it has been
seen in living memory.
Two years ago, Republicans were
sliding toward oblivion. Their presidential
candidate had been trounced by a virtual
unknown. They faced a filibuster-proof
Democratic majority in the Senate and
an equally large majority in the House.
The outlook was grim.
Until they hit on the strategy of acting as
though they’d won the 2008 elections.
They locked arms and voted as one
against pretty much everything the
President wanted to do, then blamed
him for not getting it done.
But what was really extraordinary was
that they did it by shamelessly taking the
side of the rich against the poor, while
claiming that they were speaking for the
common man.
And even more extraordinary yet was
the fact that the American people bought
what they were selling. It was one of the
great feats of political jujitsu of our time
or any other.
As a long-time observer of American
politics, I can only tip my hat in admiration
and give them the highest honor it is in
my power to bestow: the un-Timely Man
of the Year Award for 2010.
As I said, there were other deserving
candidates, so I thought I’d give them
some love too.
The barely coveted It Pays to be Ignorant
Award goes to none other than Sarah
Palin, who managed to go through an
entire year without saying one intelligent
or knowledgeable thing while growing
exponentially in political popularity (not
to mention in riches). Watching her is like
seeing a high-wire artist who works not
only without a net, but without a wire.

The competition for the Ignorance Award,
by the way, was fierce. Right behind
Sarah was Christine (“I Am Not a Witch”)
O’Donnell, the Republican Senate
candidate in Delaware who, during a
debate on religion in public schools, said
incredulously: “You’re telling me that the
separation of church and state is found
in the First Amendment?”
Right behind her was Sharron Angle,
the Senate candidate in Nevada, who
thought that Dearborn, Michigan, a
suburb of Detroit, was governed by
Sharia law.
Other notable achievers:
* Rep. Charlie Rangel, the New York
Democrat who demanded a House ethics
investigation of his finances, which then
proceeded to prove he was a crook.
* Tiger Woods, who, robbed by divorce
of the chance to cheat on his wife, went
from being the world’s greatest golfer to
a middle-of-the-pack hacker. There’s a
moral in there somewhere, but I’m afraid
to look for it.
* Rush Limbaugh, who disappointed
millions of Americans by promising to
leave the country if health care reform
passed, then not leaving when it
passed.
* Rep. John Boehner, the Ohio
Republican who apparently can’t tell the
story of his rise from saloon keeper’s
son to Speaker of the House without
bursting into tears, when it’s the rest of
us who should be crying.
* Judge Henry E. Hudson, the
conservative Virginia judge who ruled
that health care is unconstitutional. Who
knew?
It was a heck of a year. I shudder to think
of what’s ahead.

MOVES INDOORS
(NewsUSA) - Gone are the days when
poor weather outside meant sitting inside
with nothing to do but watch television
and play board games. The video game
revolution known as “motion gaming” is
proving to be a great way to boost indoor
activity levels while spending time with
the whole family -- making quality family
time an attainable goal in 2011.
Motion gaming allows children to dance
or swing their arms in order to win the
games. The newest example of the genre
is SingStar Dance, which adds dancing
to the traditional vocal gameplay, so
gamers can sing along to the hottest
new hits and learn how to shake and
groove alongside favorite pop stars.
The introduction of motion gaming
consoles has brought more active
video games into families’ living rooms.
Dancing, Disc Golf, Gladiator Duel,
Beach Volleyball, Archery, Table Tennis
and Bocce games all provide exercise
as well as fun.
But video game manufacturers have
upped the ante with the latest era of
motion gaming: the new Playstation
Move Motion Controller for PS3 features
more accurate motion control than
previous controllers, allowing kids to
shoot arrows or aim tennis balls with
greater precision. The control system
is easy to learn, too; new players can
simply pick up a controller and play,
although technical skills necessary to
beat some of the games’ challenges
may take extra time to develop.
One game, Sports Champions for the
PlayStation Move, takes full advantage
of the controller’s capabilities. Players
can compete against each other in six
sporting events: archery, bocce, table
tennis, gladiator games, beach volleyball
and disc golf. The game is fun for all
ages and skill levels -- it’s even fun to
watch.

DON’T TURN A DEAF EAR TO
SAFE EAR CLEANING
(NewsUSA) - It’s automatic -- you finish
your shower and reach for a pack of
cotton-tipped swabs. After all, if you
don’t clean out your ears, wax will build
up and give you an infection, right?
Actually, your body produces cerumen,
or earwax, for a reason. Earwax is sticky,
allowing it to trap dust, dirt, pollen, insects
or anything else that might otherwise
enter the ear canal. Without it, our ear
drums would be left vulnerable to foreign
particles that could cause infections.
That said, our bodies don’t always know
when to stop producing wax. When

Some people may develop hard earwax,
which can lead to pain. Likewise, many
doctors recommend that those with

sticking objects like swabs or bobby
pins into the ear canal can lead to

SHOULD FOOD WASTE GO
DOWN THE DRAIN?
(NewsUSA) - Americans hoping to live
“greener” lives often tackle the kitchen
first -- after all, separating the recyclables
seems easy enough. But proper waste
disposal can be more complicated than
tossing cans in a blue box.
What’s the best way to get rid of table
scraps? Should the food waste go in the
trash bag? The compost pile? Or down
the kitchen sink?
Putting food waste in the trash means it
will be trucked to a landfill. Trucking food
to landfills generates diesel fumes and
emissions. And as food decomposes
in landfills, it releases methane, a
greenhouse gas.
Composting is a good option but not
always practical for people who live in
high-rise buildings or in colder climates.
Plus, experts advise against composting
certain types of food, like meat and
dairy.
Numerous independent studies
show using a garbage disposer is an
environmentally responsible option.
More than half of American kitchens
have a disposer. On average, they cost
less than 50 cents a year in electricity
to operate and account for less than
one percent of a household’s total
water consumption. Recent advances
in disposer technology, including the
InSinkErator Evolution Series, make it
possible to discard virtually any kind of
food waste without concern about clogs
or loud noises.
Once food waste enters wastewater
treatment plants, it can be recycled
into methane and used as a renewable
source of power for the plant. Also, many
wastewater treatment plants can process

* The average U.S. family of four
produces about 2,000 pounds of food
waste each year.
* According to the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, food waste is the
third largest category of municipal solid
waste (MSW) in the U.S., accounting for
about 13 percent of MSW material.
* Americans throw away more than 25
percent of the food we prepare, according
to a study by the U.S. Department of
Agriculture. Those scraps are 70 percent
water, which makes it easy for disposers
to pulverize waste and send it through
sewage pipes.

(NewsUSA) - Today’s economy isn’t just
frustrating for those without jobs -; limited
budgets can do a number on employed
workers’ morale as well. Exemplary
employees might not be awarded with
raises, no matter how much effort they
put into their projects. Employers unable
to afford larger salaries may see their
best employees looking elsewhere.
But some companies are finding way to
keep employees happy by cultivating
employee-friendly office cultures. For
example, in the fall of 2010, Washington,
D.C.’s Office of the Chief Technology
Officer implemented a Results Only
Work Policy (ROWE), which pays
employees for results, not the hours that
they work. This means that employees
are able to work when or wherever they
want, so long as their work gets done. In
places where it has been tried, ROWE
not only boosts morale and retention,
but also improves output.
Of course, not every company is willing
to redo its entire work structure. That
doesn’t mean that they can’t find less
drastic ways to boost morale. Here are
some of the many ways that companies
can make the workplace more attractive
for employees:
* Acknowledge employees’ contributions.
Employees who work hard without
recognition are likely to lose morale.
Even if a company can’t provide raises,
managers can give out certificates or
plaques acknowledging an employee’s
accomplishments or designating an

MOISD TO ASK FOR SCHOOL
MILLAGE TAX DOLLARS WILL BE
USED TO HELP SAVE TEACHING

BIG RAPIDS — Come February, Curtis
Finch, superintendent of the Mecosta-
Osceola Intermediate School District,
hopes voters will see the fiscal forecast
for local school districts the way he does:

A proposal asking for a 1.25-mill millage
for five years for MOISD school districts
will appear before voters on a Feb. 22
ballot. For a $100,000 home, the millage
would translate to about $70 a year, or
about $240 per student.
The millage revenue would go toward
helping retain teachers, and preserving
programs that otherwise would be cut in
the face of declining revenue from the
state, Finch said.
“The cavalry is not coming; no one
is coming to save us,” he said. “The
reason we’re calling it the ‘Classroom
Connect’ millage is really because it’s all
about the classroom. Can we maintain
the programs we have? Can we keep a
lid on our class sizes that are continuing
to rise?”
If approved by voters, the revenue
generated from the five-year millage –
about $2.5 million in all – would pass
through the MOISD to local school
districts on a per-pupil basis. Those
dollars would help stem some, but not
all, of the anticipated budget cut, Finch
said.
The MOISD itself wouldn’t benefit from
the funding. Part of the millage, however,
would go toward maintaining the Math/
Science Technology Center for gifted
students.
About two years ago, Finch said, the
school districts recognized the 2011-
12 school year as a “funding cliff” due
to the combination of increasing health
care and retirement costs for staff and
declining revenue from the state.
“This’ll be the ninth year in a row that
we’ve been cutting,” Finch said.
When it comes to cutting costs in school
budgets, staff and programming are
about all that’s left. A millage, Finch said,
would help the MOISD brace for impact.
Early polling by EPIC-MRA, a Lansing
polling firm, reported that local voters
would pass the millage by a 60 percent
to 40 percent margin, if the millage itself
was kept small, and levied over a short
period of time – the 1.25-mill, five-year
numbers were selected.
Big Rapids Public Schools Superintendent
Tom Langdon said a millage would help
alleviate some of the belt-tightening that
has been going on for at least the last
six years.
The disappearance of federal stimulus
dollars next school year will exaggerate
the situations even more. Meanwhile,
capital and utility expenses continue to
increase, Langdon said.
As school districts lose students – the
MOISD has easily lost 1,500 students
during the last six years – per-pupil
funding decreases. Though student
numbers are declining, the decreases
are spread out over different grade levels,
making it inefficient to cut educators as a
cost-saving method, Langdon said.
Finch calls the effect of perpetually losing
students the “death spiral.”
“If you lose kids, that means you’re
getting less revenue,” Finch said. “If
you’re getting less revenue, that means
you need to make more cuts, which
means you’re probably going to lose
more kids, which means you’re probably
going to have to make more cuts.”
