Verb Patterns

Llamamos verb patterns o patrones de verbo a la forma en que se organizan y se conjugan dos verbos
consecutivos en una oración. Existen diferentes tipos de verb patterns y su forma depende del primer verbo en
la oración, es decir, el primer verbo condiciona la forma del segundo.

Verb + gerund (-ing):

Se usa con verbos que hablan de situaciones reales que ya has vivido, como like, love, hate, enjoy. Lo que pasa
con los verb patterns es que el primer verbo se conjuga según la persona, y el segundo se pone en alguna
forma dependiendo del verbo anterior.

Example:

gerundio normalmente.
 love > loving
 come > coming
 see > seeing

2. Los verbos formados por una sola sílaba que solo tienen una vocal y terminan en consonante, doblan esa
consonante antes de añadir —ing.
 run > running
 win > winning
 sit > sitting

3. Los verbos de dos sílabas con la acentuación en la segunda sílaba también doblan la consonante.
 begin > beginning
 prefer > preferring
 admit > admitting

4. Los verbos terminados en —y hacen el gerundio normalmente.

 play > playing
 study > studying
 carry > carrying

Activity 3: Write two sentences with each rule in your notebook or portfolio. Use the examples in the
explication of each rule.

Activity 7: Underline the sentences that have verb patterns, the ones that accomplish the rules of -ing

My friend Bernardo enjoys cooking. He also really likes eating. But one month ago, his girlfriend told him to lose
weight, so he decided to join a gym.

In the beginning, it was difficult to go regularly. He tried to go every day, but

sometimes he forgot to go. Yesterday, he drank beer with me instead of exercising.
He prefers drinking alcohol to lifting weights, of course. His girlfriend called him
when we were at the pub. He stopped drinking his beer to answer the phone. He
promised to be home by 10 p.m.

However, we kept drinking until we ran out of money.
