Harry Reid pulls omnibus
public lands bill
U.S. Senate Majority Leader
Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has
dropped his effort to pass a
massive omnibus public lands
bill that would have restricted
responsible off-highway vehi-
cle (OHV) access to thou-
sands of acres of public land.
Reid introduced the legisla-
tion, S. 303, the "America's
Great Outdoors Act of 2010,"
on Friday, Dec. 17, as a sub-
stitute to unrelated legislation
titled the "Federal Financial
Assistance Management Im-
provement Act of 2009."
Reid's move was reminiscent
of the controversial parlia-
mentary tactic that anti-OHV
forces used in 2009 to close
2.1 million acres of public
land.
"We are cautiously optimistic
that this latest effort to keep
the American public from re-
sponsibly enjoying America's
public lands has failed," said

for Government Relations Ed
Moreland. "AMA members
played no small role in this
provisional success, and we
thank our subscribers who re-
sponded to AMA Action
Alerts to oppose this pending
legislation.
"However, we must remain
vigilant because Reid has in-
dicated a desire for a smaller
version of S. 303 prior to ad-
journment," said Moreland.
"The current session can pos-
sibly run through Jan. 4,
2011."
Reid's bill was a collection of
more than 70 measures and
more than 1,000 pages. Sena-
tor James Inhofe (R-Okla.)

Renegados MC held their
14th annual toy run to
benefit the Juarez Fire-
fighter toy drive. Even in
the middle of the current
drug war that has ravaged
their city, Juarez bikers
came out by the hundreds
to bring some Christmas
joy to the kids. Over 500
motorcycles and even
more bikers and biker sup-
porters attended the run,
giving thousands of toys.
As Presidente Fox, leader
of the Renegados said,
“On this day, the war took
a back seat for this event
where Juarez took care of

united with the Renegados
in one of the biggest biker
events of the year. There

providing entertainment.
When this reporter
showed up, most of the
groups were wary, of
course. When I stated that
I was a reporter for an El
Paso magazine, I was
greeted with some amaze-
ment and great courtesy
and enthusiasm. Presi-
dente Fox stated that he
understands the new
found sentiments against
his city, but that I, and the
rest of El Paso, were “bi-
envenidos”, welcome.
“There are just a few indi-
viduals causing all these
problems, and unfortu-
nately, they harm the rep-
utation of the city as a
whole.” The Renegados
are thankful for all the
bikers who came out that
day and all the supporters
from both sides of the bor-
der, like Old West Chop-
pers and Bikers Custom
who donated various
products to use as raffle
prizes.
The bikers then paraded
through the city and
wound up at the Renega-
dos clubhouse in Barrio
Azteca where “Perfect
Moves” performed again
and El Grupo La Noche
played everything from
current cumbia hits to
American classics like
CCR’s “Have you ever
seen the rain”. Bikes of
every size and style lined
the street in front of the
clubhouse. There were
Harley Davidsons covered
in chrome and 30 year old
Kawasaki choppers, cre-
ated with hours of back-
yard engineering. From
the most extravagant mod-
ern Harley to the most
humble rat bike, held to-
gether by duct tape and
baling wire, every bike
and biker there was proud.

proud to band together for
this cause and their city.

day’s festivities, Ray-

were only 8 bikes. Not a
lot of toys that first year.

70 bikes participated on
the Friday morning run.

What Makes Harley Davidson Different

Harley Davidson today is
the most respected sought
after motorcycle in the
world. Other manufacturers
have been trying to imitate
their models for decades.
They say imitation is the
greatest form of flattery.
That is not why the compe-
tition does it though. It is
simply an effort to steal
market share. The foreign
motorcycle manufacturers
are trying to copy a US
manufacturer is kind of
ironic if you think about it.
That is not exactly the case

The Americans are chasing
the foreign automakers in
about every category.
Harley Davidson builds a
fine motorcycle but the
truth of the matter is that it
is not that much better me-
chanically than a compara-
ble foreign motorcycle. In
fact, some would even tell
you that it is not as reli-
able or built as
well. I am not
going to get
into that de-
bate. While the
other manufacturers
have done a good
job of copying the
look of the bike they
can never replicate the
sound! They also don't un-
derstand that what makes a
Harley is not just the de-
sign. It has everything to
do with the image. If you
ask most people over the
age of 30 what their fa-
vorite motorcycle is and
they would tell you,
"Harley". Many of them
buy apparel with the logo
on it even though they don't
own one. They will tell you
that they will have one
someday though. Harley
Davidson has done a fantas-
tic job of branding their
product. They have
created not only a
product but also
an image.
When a person
buys their first
Harley they imme-
diately purchase an
array of apparel and
accessories to go
with it. They join a social
class of proud Harley rid-
ers. They did not just buy a
Motorcycle, they bought an
image that and they are all
to eager to live up to it.
Harley Davidson is the ulti-
mate "Brand". It's name
represents high end quality
and portrays masculinity,
power and the ultimate
"cool".
Did the marketers at
Harley Davidson do this on
purpose, or was it just dumb
luck. After all, many peo-
ple remember the late 70's
early 80's when you could
not give a Harley Davidson
away. People also may re-
member when there were 3
year waiting lists for about
every model just a decade
or so later. An owner of a
local franchise told me once
that the mentality of Harley
Davidson was "Enough
Harley Davidson's is one
too many". That comment
made sense to me because
of what I learned in eco-
nomics about supply and
pply and demand, the lower
the supply the higher the
demand. The Harley
Davidson brand image ben-
efited greatly from that de-
mand. Whether it was
intentional or by accident I
don't know but it worked.
The US car makers could
probably benefit from a
marketing strategy closer to
that of Harly's. The US car
makers have done just the
opposite over the last
decade. They pumped out
units and sponsored numer-
ous rebate/financing pro-
grams that "Cheapened" the
image of the car or truck.
Even though there are
plenty of Harley's to be
bought on showroom floors
today you don't see 0% fi-
nancing for 72 months +
$4000 cash back. Cus-
tomers find out quickly that
every dime they save on
those kinds of programs
they also give up on resale
value later on. There is not
the same desperation feel in
the Harley Davidson mar-
keting campaigns.
I was in the car business
when I bought my first
Harley, a New 1998 Softail
Custom demo with 1700
miles on it. It was kind of
difficult for me to pay full
MSRP for a demo with
miles on it, after all, in my
business we had to give
every vehicle away to sell
it. Price on the bike was
not negotiable at that time
but I was welcome to put
my name on a list for one
with no miles. I opted to
drive that one home instead
of waiting possibly years to
get another. I did not feel
taken advantage of or
cheated. I bought into the
hype and felt pretty lucky
and proud of my new/used
bike. I realized that while I
may have paid too much by
my "car business" standards
it was really all relative.
The Harley was actually
worth more than I paid
when I drove it home. I
know because I had offers.

originally for it.
Harley Davidson is truly a
success story in marketing,
engineering, and branding.
I love mine and would not
own anything else. I am on
my eighth one now and will
probably own many more in
the future.
