Statement of Purpose

Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (MME) is a subject with enormous breadth, each
corner of which is full of greater opportunities of exploration. I, being a MME graduate,
achieved in-depth theoretical knowledge about different parts of it and believe firmly that it is
just a start of a long journey.

I remember, when I was only a kid of 10-11 years, I used to open some disable electronic and
mechanical devices to know how those worked though I could not understand that. It was
then when I made up my mind to become an engineer and do the same sort of service but on a
greater scale for my country. Then during my high school years, I fell in love with chemistry.
Out of this obsession for chemical phenomena of different materials I built my own little
laboratory and started experimenting with the limited resources I had. When I got admission
in Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), a leading university in
Bangladesh, I choose Materials and Metallurgical engineering as my undergraduate major
with the vision to follow both of my obsessions.
While Industrial revolution paved the way for socio-economic development in case of
developed countries, the underdeveloped countries like Bangladesh are still in its provenance
as far as Materials Science is concerned and she requires the contribution of qualified
materials engineers for it to flourish. A sense of responsibility for my motherland along with
my passion to relate myself with the materials improvement, which pervades through every
forward step of mankind, motivated me to pursue higher study in steel and nanomaterials.
In my undergraduate years, I have acquired a good background in the fundamentals of the
basic subjects of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics and
Chemistry. My secondary results were also outstanding. I got Talentpool Scholarship in
Primary School from when I started to show my excellence.

Now I am working in a steel mill named Dynamic Steel Complex as an Assistant Engineer
(Metallurgical). In our country, the demand of the grade steel is so much and for this I choose
to do work in steel mill to improve the quality of the steel as my undergraduate thesis topics
was also related to steels. In this factory, I am maintaining the quality of the steel and
supervising the Continuous Casting Machine (CCM) and the Inductotherm Furnace.

Similarly in my view, I feel that extracurricular activities are as important as studies in

estimating a person's overall capacity. As a field cricket player representing the university
and participating in the Inter-University Cricket Championship held in November, 2008, I am
in a position that many athletes would covet. I also participated in indoor games like Table
Tennis and Badminton. I was a regular participant of many computer games competition held
by Information Technology (IT) in BUET. Involvement in these extra-curricular activities has
fashioned my personality and widened my perception which I believe will guide me in the
coming future.

As such, I strongly feel the need to both update and enhance my existing knowledge. I am
motivated to attend graduate school by my interest in steel and nanomaterials. The wide
scope of research in graduate studies always attracted me and now after my graduation I have
decided to avail myself of the opportunity that I was missing so far. I believe pursuing a
Master of Science Degree, and subsequently, a PhD Degree at a reputed university like
Western Ontario would serve as an excellent means to accomplish my cherished goals.
An extremely distinguished faculty, a milieu of eclectic academic activity, and a graduate
program which blends high quality course work and research facilities at the cutting edge of
every sub-field are the factors which have motivated me to choose The University of
Waterloo for graduate studies. I believe the program offered will help me to acquire the
versatility needed to reach my full potential as an academician and an engineer.

After browsing through the university website, I feel that the Graduate Study at the
University of Guelph holds a lot of promise for me. The breadth and depth of the courses
coupled with a stimulating research environment seem to me the right mix for seminal work
and pioneering research.
I have an interest to dedicate in teaching and research and aspire for such a career. In the
process, I want to rise above the conventional mainstream and do something worthwhile
which will serve a long way towards a better world for us and generations to come.

It is my earnest belief that I have the necessary skills and motivation to pursue successful
graduate and postgraduate studies and joining your University seems to me as an excellent
first step. Thanks for your consideration.
