Why do not use the Audio Visual

Multimedia Laboratory

All of the students at the

Colombo know that we
have a special place to
work, to improve our
English and to work in
little things that can help
us. However, we do not
use it; a majority of us
prefer to work at home
with the excuse that not only computers but also the internet connection
could be too slow. At any rate, the lab is a place that has all of the
alternatives that could help us to improve our English performance.
Nevertheless, most of the students do not use it or simply do not know
about it.

All in all, if we were conscious about the alternatives that we have to be

better English students, the Colombo would probably change in terms of
student’s performance, and it could help people feel more secure when
they are speaking, writing or plainly secure with their English level.

Some Colombo students think that the AVM Lab 1 does not have a
purpose due to the fact that someone is interested in knowing about it,
he does not find the appropriate information. For example, if we search
on the Internet about the Colombo’s AVM Lab, we are only going to find
“What is the AMV Lab” and give us a “perfect” definition. As the
Colombo’s page explains, the AVM Lab is a space where the students
can explore and discover new tools to learn using technology. However,
this definition is not right, simply, because it does not have a connection
with the real usage and it also promotes something that does not
function whatsoever.

Furthermore, they show us like a campaign, “Open sessions” 2 that use a

methodology: learn through movies. Obviously, if we do not know a lot
about AVM Lab, less we know about
Open Sessions. This Colombo’s
strategy should be promoted due to
the fact that knows that one of the
best possibilities to improve English is
the usage of interactive methods or
the most common: Internet.

At the Colombo we can find an alternative, if we do not suit us. In the

lab, the computers have different applications and programs with which
we can continue to learn, move more, be more autonomous in our work
and above all, be more responsible in our learning.

The long and short of it is this-- we, the CCA 3 students know that
searching for new alternatives in terms of improving our English, is
necessary, we obviously need to explore different ways to learn, not only
follow the books that the Colombo offers us. We need to use
technology, we need to be more disciplined, organize some spaces or
schedules and concentrate in our English practice. We have to get used
to being more autonomous, to seeking alternatives on our own, learning
that things do not come by themselves; we must seize the opportunities
that the CCA brings to us. Something as simple as knowing how to use
the lab and be more disciplined.

Perhaps, do we not realize it is good for us?
