HAL LEONARD _ EASY J JAZZ ENSEMBLE SERIES PAK #4 The Muppet Show Theme ¢ Over The Rainbow « The Preacher Summertime « Fly Me To The Moon « It’s Still Rock And Roll To Me yeh “Er HAL LEONARD CEE TNS ON Hal Leonard Easy Play Jazz Ensemble Pak #4 This Hal Leonard Easy Play Jazz Pak is a programmatically balanced collection of carefully arranged selections. for younger Jazz ensembles. Special attention is paid to the limitations of younger players and many parts are optional, making these arrangements adaptable to most groups with reduced or imbalanced instrumentations. The director is encouraged to play the enclosed cassette for the: students. The professional performance on this tape gives the students an excellent “model” to follow, making stylistic interpretation of the arrangements easier. It can become an invaluable teaching aid Encourage the students to follow the articulations and dynamics closely. They have been carefully chosen and placed to help achieve a stylistically correct, balanced perfor- mance. All improvised solos are optional. In each case, a suggested solo has been written out in each part within the section. If desired, this suggested solo can be played by the entire sec: tion as a unison soli. Students should be encouraged, however, to improvise using the suggested solo as a guide. The optional parts have been carefully written so that their omission will not leave out an essential melody or harmony. ‘The Optional Bass part can be played on tuba if an electric or upright bass is not available. This part is also doubled in the left hand of the piano, which should be played as written if no bass instrument is available. If the ensemble has more players than the instrumentation calls for (e.g. five trumpets on three trumpet parts), the non-optional parts (Trumpet 1, Trumpet 2) should be doubled first EASY JAZZ PAK ## 4.3 The Preacher. Summertime . Fly Me To The Moon. It's Still Rock And Roll To Me. sane s THE MUPPET SHOW THEME The performance tempo of this arrangement can be as slow as J = 144, played with a “two-feel” in a dixieland style, or much faster in a two-beat show style (as recorded on the per- formance tape). The articulations are musically appropriate for either style and tempo. OVER THE RAINBOW This very beautiful ballad has become a standard in jazz literature. This easy arrangement should be played with warmth in a smooth, legato manner. Please watch all dynamics carefully. The melody in the trumpets at measure 5 can be played by a soloist or the entire section. In the sax solis (measures 13-20 and 29-36), the lead alto should predominate with the rest of the section blending smoothly underneath. The climax, starting at measure 45, should have a full tutti sound, but not overblown. The first trumpet has the lead in this section THE PREACHER The first chorus should be played in a rubato manner - gospel hymn style. Balance and blend should be stressed in this seo- tion, as well as in the swing section starting at measure 21 Articulations have been carefully added to help achieve a musical performance. The staccato quarter notes should be played with a little more length than usual (as “long-short” notes). For example, measures 22 and 23 should be played: 14 { £2) . encourage the players to “lay back” and not rush the consecutive quarter notes as in measures 25 and 26. All eighth notes are played in a swing style( JJ=J ). The suggested trumpet solo at measure 38 appears in all three trumpet parts. It can be played as a solo by any trumpet or as a section soli. The trumpet solo in the last two measures should be played in a free, cadenza style. EASY JAZZPAK No.4 4 Arranger’s Comments ‘SUMMERTIME, The first two bars should be played In a slow, deliberate, sub: divided manner. Follow the dynamics closely in this introduc: tion (and throughout the arrangement). At measure 3, the arrangement moves into a moderate tempo in an easy latin style. Eighth notes are played straight, not swing. The melody at measure 9 can be played by a soloist or the entire trumpet section. At measure 2, the drummer should set up the swing section beginning at measure 26. In this section, eighth notes should be played in a swing style J] ="). Measure 38 is a return to the original easy latin style (straight eights). Playing the performance tape for your students will help them achieve the correct style throughout. FLY ME TO THE MOON This is a moderate swing, “ala Basie” arrangement of a great song. After an introduction by the saxes, the full band should play the opening statement in a “cool” manner. Steady “laid back” time, careful attention to articulations and overall blend are necessary to achieve the proper style. All eighth =a ea The tenor solo at measure 39 can be played as a soli by tne first alto, first tenor and first trombone, or as a solo by any of these instruments. Remember to play this chart in the cool, relaxed style of the Count. The rhythm section should be especially careful to keep steady time, keep it relaxed, and swing! notes are played in a swing style ( J IT’S STILL ROCK AND ROLL TO ME This is an easy arrangement of a popular Billy Joel song. The chart should be played with a shuffle feel throughout. Dotted eighth-sixteenth patterns are played with a triplet feel (£ d= D).Note that the first note of the pattern is short and the second note is held full value. Accented notes (¢) should be held full value, not separated, Play the tape of this tune for your students before they read the chart to help them achieve the correct style. The tenor solo at measure 50 should be played as written and ina very tunky style. This solo can also be played by the first alto or first trumpet, if desired, ae .
