This procedure does not release you from the obligation to comply with flag state requirements, national
and / or international regulations.

1 Purpose and Scope of this document


The scope of this procedure is to ensure the safe entry to the vessels pump room.

3 Responsibilities for this procedure


Every crew member has to perform the “Ballast – Pump room entry Familiarisation” prior entry into the pump
room.

4 Description of the procedure


4.1 Introduction
Pump rooms, by virtue of their location, design and operation, which require the space to be routinely entered
by personnel, constitute a particular hazard and therefore special precautions are necessary.

4.2 Requirements prior entry


Even if on the vessel the pump rooms are ballast pump rooms following procedure must be followed:
• Notify the OOW and/or the Chief Officer prior entry. Communication with an appointed person outside the
pump room has to be maintained.
 The ventilation system must be in operation at least 15 min. prior entry and remain in operation while
personnel remains inside the pump room.
 If the ventilation fails while personnel is inside, the pump room must be vacated immediately.
 A log with persons entering the pump room must be maintained.
 Check for hydrocarbons and oxygen content in pump room atmosphere. Use the personnel Oxygen analyser.
 Use the Form “E04 – FORM 02 Checklist for Entering Ballast-Pump room” – this form must be displayed at a
designated area at the pumpr room entrance, top level. Retention time: 2 Weeks.
 Pump room evacuation lifting arrangement has to be rigged and be ready for immediate use

4.3 Further Requirements


 Lines containing cargo products where maintenance is required should not be drained into the pump room
bilges
 In case of any leakage the OOW or the Chief Officer must be informed
 Pump room bilges must be kept clean and dry

4.4 Cargo operations


 The pump room ventilation must be in operation during all cargo operations and any further port stays.
 If cargo is detected in the pump room, cargo operations must be stopped until the leak is identified and proper
corrective action has been taken.
 Tanks an lines containing petroleum must not be drained in the pump room bilges

Note: Particular care must be taken to prevent the escape of hydrocarbon liquids or vapour into the pump room.
