ACT(EC-2012) Quiz-2 (Class Test-2) Date:15/04/2020

(a). Four signals each band limited to 5,9,11,14 kHz are transmitted through FDM channel
[1.5x10] simultaneously. The modulators used in the above four signals are AM,DSB,SSB,VSB
respectively. Determine the minimum band width required. Assuming a guard band gap of 2
kHz and vestige bandwidth of 1 kHz.

(b). A carrier signal of frequency fc = 105 Hz is LSSB-SC modulated by a message signal given
by x(t)= cos2000πt+2cos4000πt. Sketch the two sided spectrum of modulated signal. What is
the average power of modulated signal.

(c) The carrier c(t)=Acos2π106t is angle modulated (PM and FM) by the signal
m(t)=2cos2000πt. The deviation constants are Kp=1.5 rad/V and Kf=3000 Hz/V. Determine
the value of βf and βp. If the amplitude and frequency of modulating signal decreased by
factor of 2, then calculate the bandwidth of FM and PM.

(d)When a Super Heterodyne receiver is tuned to 555KHz,its local oscillator provides the
mixer with an input at 1010KHz.The antenna at the receiver is connected to the mixer via a
tuned circuit whose loaded Q is 40. Determine the image frequency rejection ratio in dB.

(e) Explain the need for 'pre-emphasis and de-emphasis' in the case of FM system.

(f)The signal x(t)=12cos(800πt)cos21800πt is ideally sampled at 4600 samples/sec.

(i)Determine the minimum allowable sampling frequency?

(ii) Does it shows Aliasing Effect? Justify.

(iii)The sampled signal is passed through a low pass filter with a cut-off frequency of
2400Hz. What are the frequency components present in the output of LPF?

(g)A message signal of bandwidth of 5 kHz is to be transmitted using SSB/SC over a

transmission channel characterized by an additive noise of 2-sided PSD of 0.5x10-15W/Hz
and a transmission loss of 100 dB. If a destination SNR of 40 dB is required, determine the
average transmitted power required.

(h)Which type of Sampling technique is most widely used and Why?.Four signals each band
limited to 5 kHz are sampled at 30% higher than Nyquist rate. The resulting PAM samples are
transmitted over a single channel after time division multiplexing. Calculate the minimum
transmission bandwidth of the channel.

(i) Why a hard limiter circuit is used in FM receiver? Explain with neat diagram.
