Comparatives
Comparative adjectives are used to compare differences between the two objects or people. We have
some rules to use these comparatives (Los adjetivos comparativos se emplean para comparar
diferencias entre dos objetos o personas. Existen algunas reglas para usar los comparativos).
Rules:
1. ONE SYLLABLE ADJECTIVES
Add -er for the comparative if the adjective has a consonant + single vowel + consonant spelling, the
final consonant must be doubled before adding the ending. (Agrega –er al adjetivo si tiene una
consonante+ vocal+consonante, se debe doblar esta última)

tall taller

fat fatter

 My house is larger than hers.

 This box is smaller than the one I lost.
 Your dog runs faster than Jim's dog.

2. TWO SYLLABLES

Adjectives with two syllables can form the comparative either by adding –er. Adjectives ending in y,
change the “y” to an “i” before adding the ending. (a los adjetivos con dos sílabas se les agrega “er”.
Si el adjetivo termina en “y”, se cambia por “i” y se agrega “er”)

happy Happier

simple Simpler

 My house is larger than hers.

 This box is smaller than the one I lost.
 Your dog runs faster than Jim's dog.

3. THREE OR MORE SYLLABLES

Adjectives with three or more syllables form the comparative by putting more in front of the adjective.
(a los adjetivos con tres o más sílabas se les antepone “more”
