Westminster Park
News from Westminster Park Residents’ Association
www.wp-ra.org.uk

Another grant for park?

The Park is hoping to receive another award under the Queen Elizabeth Challenge, which
will give the park special protection. The award includes £37,000 to use to purchase outdoor
adult gym equipment. It has come, if we are successful, at a very opportune time because
this type of equipment was next on our list to raise money for. Where equipment has been
installed in other parks it is usually spaced out at approximately 200 metre intervals so that
people can walk and exercise over a period of time. Full instructions on use will be attached
to each piece of equipment - but please do not overdo your exercises!
Biodiversity is also being looked at with special regard to the existing ponds, trees, shrubs
and generally creating an environment conducive to the development of wild life. The
possibility of thinning the trees either side of the car park is also being investigated.

Lock up your car

The local Police have been active south of the river in many areas of concern, especially
anti-social behaviour, quad bike misuse and cars left unlocked at night. They have been
walking around the area in the middle of the night and trying car doors to see if they were
locked. You can contact the Police on 0845 458 6375.

Spring social
Our spring social event for 2011 is to be a Musical Evening with the Chester Operatic
Society on Saturday, 9 April.

No stopping outside school

The Council is proposing a traffic control order banning any stopping outside Belgrave
School. This is in response to continual complaints about dangerous parking by parents
dropping off children for school.

Cycle racks update

After discussion with Cheshire West and Chester Council
(arranged through Councillor Richard Short) it has been
agreed that, instead of installing further bollards at the shops
in order to make it safer for parents, children and pedestrians
by stopping cars parking on the pavement, the spare funds
have been used to purchase four additional cycle racks
(making eight in total).
This, hopefully, will not only have the same effect but also be
both a facility to be used and easier on the eye than having a
series of bollards. The Council has agreed to install the cycle
racks free of charge.

WINTER SOLUTION
During the colder winter
months the skin becomes
more vulnerable to the
environment increasing
sensitivity, dryness and
dehydration.
This is because the skin’s Barrier
Function is becoming impaired
making it less efficient at keeping
the elements out and internal
moisture in.
Winter has arrived early this season
and with extremely low temperatures.
Intake of fluids should be increased to
counteract the loss of moisture from
the central heating in homes, the work
place and heated vehicles.
As mentioned last month, exfoliation
is essential at least 3 times a week.
Exfoliate only twice a week if you suffer
from open active acne. Exfoliation is
essential to prevent the build up
of dead cells on the skin’s
surface, thus allowing
moisturising
creams to
penetrate
deeper into
the skin’s
layers and
promoting
a healthier,
hydrated
skin.

Local policing priorities have been set following

engagement with the local community and based on
information fed back at surgeries held with local residents:

l Parking problems causing congestion outside Overleigh

St Marys School on the Old Wrexham Road, normally as
a consequence of school pick ups and drop offs.
l Edgars Field Park and Playground
Continuance of high visibility and reassurance patrols
within Edgars park and playground due to anti social
behaviour problems that have occurred during previous
months.
l High Visibility and reassurance to be provided along
Dukes Drive and Green Bank Woods due to reports that
people are drinking in the woods potentially causing Anti
Social Behaviour.

You said - Due to ongoing construction work at West Cheshire College, parking and
congestion problems in and around Eaton Road.
We did – High visibility patrols have taken place regularly over the last month with fixed
penalty notices being issued to numerous vehicles which are illegally parked. Traffic
wardens have also patrolled Handbridge and a total of 44 penalty notices were issued within
the area.
You said –. Parking problems causing congestion outside Overleigh St Marys School on
the Old Wrexham Road, normally as a consequence of school pick ups and drop offs.
We did – This is an ongoing issue and a meeting took place on 8th November with
representatives form Highways, Schools, Cheshire Constabulary, as well as your local
councillor. A number of suggestions to ease the congestion have been put forward to the
relevant organisations and we are awaiting further information

A local Surgery is held in your area every 3-4 weeks with myself and your local
Councillor. The surgeries are held on the bench opposite The Ship Inn public
house by the Old Dee Bridge. Please feel free to come along for a chat.

I had slumps that lasted into the winter - Bob Uecker

RECIPE
Roast Fillet of Pork Wrapped in
Parma Ham with Madeira Cream
Serves 6

Ingredients:
2 large pork fillets
12 large sage leaves
12 pieces of Parma ham
500g wild mushrooms
Mash potatoes

For the sauce:

2 diced shallots
100ml Madeira
100ml chicken stock
50g butter
100ml double cream

Method for the Pork:

1. Remove all excess fat and sinew from the pork fillet and place to one side
2. Place a large sheet of cling film on your chopping board and lay out the slices of Parma ham
overlapping each piece. Then scatter the sage leaves and place the pork fillet directly in the
middle.
3. Place one side of the ham over the pork fillet then roll tight using the cling film and pinching
both ends to achieve a tight cylinder shape.
4. Heat up a frying pan and remove the cling film from the pork fillet. Brown the pork fillet in the
frying pan.
5. Place the pork into a pre heated oven at 180˚C for about 10-12 minutes; adjust cooking time
according to your oven. When you remove the pork from the oven leave it to rest on a wooden
chopping board for 5 minutes and then cut into slices.

Whilst the pork fillet is cooking you can make the sauce which is very simple.
Place the shallots in a pan with the Madeira and reduce to a syrup. Add the chicken stock and
reduce by half then add the cream and butter, add some seasoning and place to one side until
serving.

To Serve
Place some mash potatoes in the centre of a plate and arrange the slices of pork around, scatter
over some cooked wild mushrooms and spoon over the delightful Madeira sauce.
