the race. Usually, we mean
the person in charge, running things. We seem to
think having a leader is a good thing. We also seem
to think that the willingness to take charge and run
things is a good thing.
Problems crop us when the leader, chosen or
self-appointed, either lacks the knowledge or skills
to accomplish the goals, or, has different personal
goals from the group s/he leads. The framers of the
Constitution understood this. They built our govern-
ment in a way that protects us from such leaders by
both limiting their power and providing a means of
removing them. Nothing could be more important.
Back to our thralldom. Over the centuries, we
have given away more and more of our control of
our leader. Congress has legislated away their
control of many of the areas the Constitution vests
in Congress into the hands of the president. Today,
the president may enter into war on his own whim,
may declare treaties void, and may even MAKE
treaties. He may use the nation’s military power as
his personal enforcers, or purse, for that matter. His
unilateral power has become so vast that it invades
every aspect of our lives.
We owe President Trump a debt of gratitude
for showing us just how vast these powers are by
being the first president to use them so broadly and
bluntly. He has also shown us that a president may
act as if he has power that, even today, he has not
been granted, and that great outrage and organized
resistance are often unable to successfully oppose
the exercise of such unauthorized power.
Many of our presidents deemed great exceed-
