Apologies to Mark Curtis
Mark Curtis was planning to run for State House in District 19 against Sheryl Williams
Stapleton. However, I forgot that in order to be placed on the ballot, he needed a letter from
the State Chair or Secretary certifying him as a candidate of the Libertarian Party of New
Mexico. Thus, he won't be on the ballot for this election.
New Mexico Liberty (the Web Site)
Recently, Paul Gessing and the Rio Grande Foundation created a social utility site using
ning.com, titled interestingly enough, New Mexico Liberty. The URL is
newmexicoliberty.com – check it out for yourselves, and join in the fun! At present, there are
sixty-seven people from around the state signed up as members, and while the LPNM is
well-represented in that regard, so far, I'm the one who's carrying the ball for, as Steve
Kubby says it, straight-up 80 proof gut-burning freedom.
New Mexico for Bob Barr
The New Mexico for Bob Barr Meetup group is open for business and attracting members –

Michelle Scholz has signed up as the organizer for the meetup, and Morgan Wells of the
Santa Fe area will be setting up a music festival at the College of Santa Fe on behalf of the
campaign. (Morgan will also be the LPNM's college organizer for the College of Santa Fe.)
The LPNM Blog Makes a Comeback?
I had been all set to delete the blog that I had set up on Blogspot com for the LPNM when I
received an email asking me who was allowed to post there. So I sent out a few invites to
certain select individuals in the LPNM, so they could post there.
Stanhope for President 2012
Back in 2007, I supported stand-up comedian Doug Stanhope for the LP's presidential
nomination, as he really seemed to have a handle on the libertarian philosophy. I was
disappointed, to say the least, in May, 2007, when he announced that he had to drop out of
the race after being informed that his plan to use his comedy tour as a campaign venue
would have been in violation of the Federal Election Code.
Lo and behold, it turns out that there are some people interested in seeing Stanhope be the
LP's 2012 presidential candidate. See here for more information –

Jay Vandersloot continues to be active in staffing at table at blade
and gun shows at the State Fairgrounds in Albuquerque and could
use some help at the shows – any assistance would be welcome,
even if it is only for a couple of hours. Anyone interested in helping
at the table at the gun show, providing literature to hand out,
loaning us an LP banner, or a projection screen should contact Jay

Paul Gessing and Rio Grande Foundation have just established a
social-networking site for small-l libertarians called New Mexico
Liberty – newmexicoliberty.com is the URL. This is in addition to
other activities, which can be found at the RGF's site –
riograndefoundation.org.
Mike Blessing will begin posting flyers for the CNM Libertarians at
various locations on campus during August and September 2008.

Be Ready to Tell Them Why Liberty if to Their Benefit!
The last couple of months we have been looking at the LP Platform
Statement of Principles and the planks that cover the aspects of
personal and economic liberty. And, we’ve noted the change to a
much more succinct format, providing a quick statement of the
principle for which we in the Libertarian Party stand. This month we
will continue our review of the platform, by taking a look at the
planks in the section titles Securing Liberty. As I’ve said the last two
months, the new platform might not contain all the planks we
believe should be there, and therefore might not satisfy some of us,
yet it is a step in the right direction. I, for one, would rather a little
improvement in the right direction, then no improvement at all.
The November elections are less than a month away, and we are
running out of time to influence the minds of our fellow voters. We
need to get out and talk to everyone we know, to explain why liberty
and freedom are in their best interests and how it will benefit their
lives. While many will agree with you, they will also tell you that
they would be wasting their vote if they didn’t vote for one of the
major party candidates. We need to be ready to counter The
Wasted Vote Syndrome and explain what the real wasted vote is.
Below, I am including an abbreviated version of an article I
published in NML in 2006 and 2007, on the subject of The Wasted
Vote.
The Wasted Vote, Lesser of Two Evils, and
Mandate From the People Syndromes!
While talking to others about Libertarian candidates, there are
numerous questions you will be asked, but there is one question
that is almost always asked of Libertarians. The person asking the
question states the belief that there is no chance the Libertarian
candidate will be elected, and asks why they should “waste” their
votes on candidates they believe have no chance of being elected,
when they can make their vote count by voting for one of the two
major party candidates. Usually it is also stated that they are
planning to cast their vote based on the “lesser of two evils”
concept. Usually, the Libertarian answers that if you vote for the
lesser of two evils, you are still left with evil. Both the voter’s view
and the Libertarian’s reply ignore a very important element of what
happens in elections – something that I refer to as the “Mandate
From the People Syndrome.”
Even though voters cast their ballots based on which candidates
they believe will be less harmful, the candidates who are elected do
not know, and do not care, how many voters voted for them, and
how many actually voted against their opponents. All they see is
the percentage of the vote they received and say, “I have a
MANDATE from the people.”
In effect, the voice of the person voting for the “lesser of two evils”
is not heard. The elected candidate does not know that you are
unhappy with his or her political positions. In actuality, the vote
for the “lesser of two evils” is the TRUE wasted vote.
Instead of voting for the “lesser of two evils” the voter should vote
for the candidate who has the principles and political views in which
the voter believes. By doing so, even though that candidate may
not be elected, the voice of the voter is heard, because the
candidates who are elected see that they do not have the
“mandate from the people” that they would otherwise have
thought they had. They will see that part of their constituency is
dissatisfied with their politics, and that they must change if they
want to have any hope of gaining those votes in the future.

We see over and over that we cannot depend on the Republican or
Democrat party elected officials to do what is right and needs to be
done, as we see that they both perpetuate big government and
continually pass laws that violate the US Constitution and our
rights, and hinder the cause of liberty. If we are to advance the
cause of liberty, we will have to do it ourselves, by getting
Libertarians elected to office.
Therefore, it is incumbent upon all of us to expose the fallacy of the
common wasted-vote syndrome belief by showing our family,
friends, neighbors, co-workers, and anyone else with whom we
come into contact that their vote for the Libertarian candidate is
the only vote that really counts. Only by voting for the
Libertarian candidate will their voice truly be heard by whoever
is elected.

3.0 Securing Liberty
The protection of individual rights is the only proper purpose of
government. Government is constitutionally limited so as to prevent
the infringement of individual rights by the government itself. The
principle of non-initiation of force should guide the relationships
between governments.
3.1 National Defense
We support the maintenance of a sufficient military to defend the
United States against aggression. The United States should both
abandon its attempts to act as policeman for the world and avoid
entangling alliances. We oppose any form of compulsory national
service.
3.2 Internal Security and Individual Rights
The defense of the country requires that we have adequate
intelligence to detect and to counter threats to domestic security.
This requirement must not take priority over maintaining the civil
liberties of our citizens. The Bill of Rights provides no exceptions for
a time of war. Intelligence agencies that legitimately seek to
preserve the security of the nation must be subject to oversight and
transparency. We oppose the government's use of secret
classifications to keep from the public information that it should
have, especially that which shows that the government has violated
the law.
3.3 International Affairs
American foreign policy should seek an America at peace with the
world and its defense against attack from abroad. We would end
the current U.S. government policy of foreign intervention, including
military and economic aid. We recognize the right of all people to
resist tyranny and defend themselves and their rights. We condemn
the use of force, and especially the use of terrorism, against the
innocent, regardless of whether such acts are committed by
governments or by political or revolutionary groups.

BY THE WAY: As I’ve been saying for months, I find the thought of
EITHER of the two Major party candidates who are running for
President being elected to be a scary thought. The way I see it, the
only viable option is to vote your conscience. For me, that means
voting Libertarian.

3.4 Free Trade and Migration
We support the removal of governmental impediments to free trade.
Political freedom and escape from tyranny demand that individuals
not be unreasonably constrained by government in the crossing of
political boundaries. Economic freedom demands the unrestricted
movement of human as well as financial capital across national
borders. However, we support control over the entry into our
country of foreign nationals who pose a threat to security, health, or
property.
3.5 Rights and Discrimination
We condemn bigotry as irrational and repugnant. Government
should not deny or abridge any individual's rights based on sex,
wealth, race, color, creed, age, national origin, personal habits,
political preference, or sexual orientation. Parents, or other
guardians, have the right to raise their children according to their
own standards and beliefs.
3.6 Representative Government
We support electoral systems that are more representative of the
electorate at the federal, state, and local levels. As private voluntary
groups, political parties should be allowed to establish their own
rules for nomination procedures, primaries, and conventions. We
call for an end to any tax-financed subsidies to candidates or
parties and the repeal of all laws which restrict voluntary financing
of election campaigns. We oppose laws that effectively exclude
alternative candidates and parties, deny ballot access, gerrymander
districts, or deny the voters their right to consider all legitimate
alternatives.
3.7 Self-Determination
Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of
individual liberty, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it,
and to agree to such new governance as to them shall seem most
likely to protect their liberty.
4.0 Omissions
Our silence about any other particular government law, regulation,
ordinance, directive, edict, control, regulatory agency, activity, or
machination should not be construed to imply approval.

It looks like the NRA is finally getting involved in the presidential
race:
The NRA has not yet endorsed a presidential candidate.
LaPierre planned news conferences Thursday in
Pennsylvania, Missouri, Colorado and Nevada to make an
announcement on the presidential election. He declined
Wednesday to reveal which candidate the NRA would
endorse but added that the group would “be foolish to
overlook the vast areas of agreement” it has with John
McCain.
Let’s take a look at how the NRA feels about Sen. John McCain.
In 2001, NRA President Wayne LaPierre said, “Is it possible that
John McCain thinks you have too much freedom?” According to
NewsMax, LaPierre was angry over advertisements McCain
appeared in for Americans for Gun Safety, an anti-Second
Amendment group who’s website now points to the Brady
campaign, and McCain-Lieberman, a bill designed to close the so-
called “gun show loophole.”
After appearing in the ads, the NRA called McCain, “one of the
premier flag carriers for the enemies of the Second Amendment”
and “the poster boy for Americans For Gun Safety.” Strong words.
By the way, McCain’s position hasn’t changed on the “loophole”
issue.
As early as April of this year, NRA Executive Director Chris Cox
told The Hill, “John McCain still has some work to do” to gain the
trust of the NRA. Cox added, “Truth be told, he’s not there yet.”
In 2004, the NRA issued lifetime rankings of all members of
Congress. Sen. McCain received a “C+”, indicating a mixed record
on the Second Amendment.
Bob Barr has an “A+” lifetime rating from the NRA. Bob serves on
the board of the NRA. His record on the Second Amendment is
without question.
Given the fact that Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox have exposed
John McCain as an anti-gun sympathizer, we here at Bob Barr
2008 fully expect that the NRA will announce their support for Bob
Barr tomorrow and run ads against both Sen. John McCain and
Sen. Barack Obama.

bears noting that both McCain and Obama were “F”-rated by GOA

Rio Grande Foundation’s “New Mexico Votes” Site
Compiles Legislators’ Records of Showing Up for Votes

(Albuquerque) – NewMexicoVotes.org, the new government
transparency Web site recently launched by the Rio Grande
Foundation, is providing an unprecedented tool for legislators,
candidates, and anyone wanting to know more about a legislator’s
voting record. The site has compiled a one-stop shop where any
legislator’s cumulative missed vote history for 2008 can be viewed.

By clicking on the Missed Votes Report in the gray bar on the left of
the site, and then the Total Missed Votes* tab, viewers can look at
the data alphabetically or numerically by repeatedly clicking the tab.
The site also reveals the vote data for all the other legislators on
each missed vote with just the click of a mouse.
Paul Gessing, President of the Rio Grande Foundation, noted “This
feature of the NewMexicoVotes.org site provides voters and the
media with yet another way to track what their legislators are doing
(or not doing) when the Legislature is in session in Santa Fe.
Certainly, there are legitimate reasons for legislators to miss votes,
but it is up to voters and those in the media to discern what is
legitimate and what is questionable.”
“With this feature, viewers don’t have to go searching each
individual bill to find out how their legislators voted. Everyone’s
votes are compiled in one list that’s easy to use and analyze,” said
Gessing.
Gessing also noted that, with voting records being prime campaign
fodder for candidates in an election season, NewMexicoVotes.org
makes it easy for viewers to go online and easily see the how well
their legislators are representing them.

Open Letter to Junior Scholastic

We received copies of Junior Scholastic that we ordered under your
FREE TRIAL offer; thank you.
Santa Fe Community School (SFCS) is an alternative, private
school, which was started in 1968 to provide parents with a real
CHOICE for an education apart from the authoritarian, top down,
military-minded training programs provided in government schools,
designed to produce another generation of obedient robots. (Read:
Dumbing Us Down – The Hidden Curriculum of Government
Schools, written by twice-acclaimed New York State Teacher of the
Year, John Taylor Gatto.)
To exercise our fundamental (constitutional) right to teach our own
children in accordance with sincerely-held beliefs, in addition to
paying for this "free" choice, SFCS had to cover costs of a suit
against the NM State Board of Education, from which we won a
unanimous State Supreme Court decision in 1975 – and
subsequently started the homeschooling movement in which over
2,000,000 students now participate. (See: sfcs-homestudy.org )
This is background for what follows re: the election coverage in
Junior Scholastic:
Your automatic phone answering message claims your magazine
provides "complete election coverage" and encourages teachers to
"get students excited about the democratic process." So, we took a
chance; we ordered your magazine. Instead of "complete election
coverage" of the presidential race, your magazine limited
discussion to candidates from just the two major parties (not
untypical of the government's agenda), effectively eviscerating
CHOICE from voters by pre-selecting just TWO of the candidates
who have qualified. One of our students questioned the exclusion
of Bob Barr, for example, who is polling 6% nationally.
This limitation of choice is a government ploy, something to be
resisted and discouraged by individuals and private companies,
particularly one that claims to excite "students . . . about the
democratic (sic) process"!
Shame on you.
