Set Operations

Definition of operations on sets is when two or more sets combine together to

form one set under the given conditions, then operations on sets are carried out.

Sets have 3 basic operation, that is :

 Union Sets
 Intersection Sets
 Complement Sets

A. Union Sets

Union of two given sets is the smallest set which contains all the elements of
both the sets.

To find the union of two given sets A and B is a set which consists of all the
elements of A and all the elements of B such that no element is repeated.

The symbol ∪ is employed to denote the union of two sets.

 the set A ∪ B—read “A union B” or “the union of A and B”is defined as the
set that consists of all elements belonging to either set A or set B (or both).

For Example :

 Suppose that Committee A, consisting of the 5 members

{ Ana,Ani,Andi,Ando,Anti } meets with Committee B, consisting of the 5
members { Alana,Ani , Mita, Husni, Andi, } Clearly, the union of
Committees A and B must then consist of 8 members rather than 10 {Ani,
Ana,Andi, Ando,Anti , Alana, Mita, Husni }
 A = {a, b, c, d, e} dan B = {b, c, f, g, h}
A ∩ B = {a,b, c,d,e,f,g,h}

B. Intersection Sets

Intersection of two given sets is the largest set which contains all the elements
that are common to both the sets.
To find the intersection of two given sets A and B is a set which consists of all the
elements which are common to both A and B.

The symbol for denoting intersection of sets is ‘∩‘.

For Example :

 If set A = {2, 3, 4, 5, 6} and set B = {3, 5, 7, 9}

In this two sets, the elements 3 and 5 are common. The set containing
these common elements
{3, 5} is the intersection of set A and B.

C. Complement Sets

The complement of a set A contains everything that is not in the set A.

The complement is notated A’, or Ac, or sometimes ~A.

For Example :

 If Set A = {2, 3, 4, 5, 6} and U = { 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,8,9 } then find A

complement (A’) ?

Solution :

Set A = {2, 3, 4, 5, 6}

Universal Set : { 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,8,9 }

A’ : {7,8,9}

given the opportunity to be able to compile a working paper entitled “Operation Of
Sets” is property and correctly, and on time.

This paper is structured so that readers can know how to prove operations of
sets. This paper was compiled with help from various parties. And because the aid
and the hel of God Almight, thes paper can be fnally resolved.

The compilers also thanked to Mrs. Fera as she lecturer in English subject.

Hopefully this paper can give a broader insight to the reader. Although this
