ENGLISH PEDAGOGY

STUDENT TEACHING PRACTICE

OBSERVATION STAGE

Task 1: The School and Learning Environment

Name of the student teacher: Paula Alejandra López Lebuy

Name of School: Escuela Santa Julia, Viña del Mar.
Number of students: 374.
Date: September 28, 2010.
Class: 8°B.

Briefly describe the following aspects:

1. The school:
Principal: Julio Tapia Acevedo.
U.T.P: Petronila Carrasco Ortiz.
General Inspector: Hernán Soto Mendoza.
English Teacher: Luis Astudillo Silva.
It is a half private school that focuses on improving the expectations of its students, to train
men and women with values and to accept diversity, integrating those with disabilities.
It is a small school, with only 374 students, with Pre-basica and Básica education, located in
Santa Julia in the high part of Viña del Mar, is a rather warm, with lots of open space with a
large yard, one indoor and one outdoor.

2. The classroom
The classroom is the typical, in which students are seated in rows, facing the teacher's desk
and blackboard, is clean, has a shelf where students keep their books and notebooks, have a
whiteboard, the classroom size is appropriate for the number of students, there is enough
space between rows of desks, the room lighting is good, has enough windows, curtains, white
board, eraser, etc.
The class is not large; the number of students is the 26, therefore it is not that difficult to teach
in this room.

3. The activities & resources

a) The activities I have seen in the class are the normal ones that are performed in most of the
schools in our country. Most of the time the students look like they are engaged with the
activities. They pay attention to the tasks. The teacher is always trying to keep the students
attention in the tasks.
b) All the activities are done with the students textbook, the one that the government gives.
The listening tasks are done with a small radio, but the acoustics of the room is really good, so
there are no problems to develop the task.

Task 2: Student´s learning

In this second observation task, you should focus on the things that help
to create conditions for effective learning and on the aspects that play
a part in preventing learning.

1. The learners
Not all the students look motivated to learn English, but some of them are really interested in
the subject, they think English is good to understand the meaning in songs, in movies, in
youtube videos, etc.
The students have expectations about their future; they are really worried about what they
want to be in the future.
At my first day of observation in the classroom, the students have problems with me helping
them. But now they are really opened to receive help with their learning.
The students always try to have the answers as easy as they could, but I’ve tried to give them
clues to find the right answer, and it is really helpful.

2. Behaviour during classroom activities.

All the activities done in the class are directed by the teacher, he asks some questions to
students, he says who will answer the questions.
When students are about to read something, they always do a brainstorming, guessing, and try
to predict what the text is about.
Some of the students are talking all the time and they distract the rest of the class attention,
and the teacher tries to keep them engaged by asking questions, and making them participate
with the rest of the class.
There is one student who has attention problems.

3. Discuss the learning styles and levels of English in the classroom.

Many of the students have problems to speak in front of the rest, because they feel ashamed.
The rest of the students say, they don’t know anything about the language, and some of them
don’t care about the language.
Even though many of the students have these feelings about English, they look engaged during
the class, they participate a lot, sharing their knowledge with the rest, they also help each
other trying to answer their classmates questions about the language.
