Overview
After the DBS3900 WiMAX site is deployed, approved, and put into use, routine maintenance
is performed to ensure the functionality of the DBS3900 WiMAX.
This document describes the routine hardware maintenance items for the DBS3900 WiMAX,
such as maintenance items concerning the equipment room, power supply system, grounding
system, and DBS3900 equipment. The document also provides guidelines for replacing the
components, modules, and cables of the DBS3900.

1 Site Maintenance Preparations
The preparations for the DBS3900 site maintenance cover the activities of obtaining site
information, selecting maintenance items, and arranging for tools and spare parts.
2 DBS3900 Routine Hardware Maintenance Tasks
The tasks of the routine hardware maintenance of the DBS3900 include: the environmental
maintenance of the equipment room, the maintenance of the power supply system and grounding
system of the BTS, the maintenance of the BBU, the maintenance of the RRU, the maintenance
of cables, and the maintenance of the antenna system.
3 Powering On and Powering Off the DBS3900
When you power on the DBS3900, you need to check the status of the indicators of all the
equipment. When you power off the DBS3900, you can choose the normal power-off or
emergency power-off according to the actual situation.
4 Replacing the Components of the BBU3900
The faulty BBU3900 components must be replaced promptly. The components that can be
replaced are the BBU case, boards, modules, and optical module. All boards are hot-swappable.
When boards are running, abnormal power-off of boards will not cause damage to the hardware
and software.
5 Replacing the Components of the RRU3702/RRU3703
The faulty RRU3702/RRU3703 components must be replaced promptly. The components that
can be replaced are the RRU3702/RRU3703 module, and the optical module.
6 Replacing the Components of the Fan-Cooling RRU3701C
Faulty RRU3701C components must be replaced promptly. The components that can be replaced
for the fan-cooling RRU3701C are the RRU3701C module, case, fan subrack, and optical
module.
7 Replacing the Components of the Natural-Cooling RRU3701C
Faulty RRU3701C components must be replaced promptly. The components that can be replaced
for the natural-cooling RRU3701C are the RRU3701C module, shell, and optical module.
This section describes how to replace the HEUA board, AC/DC power cable, DCDU, and the
AC surge protection box in the OMB.
During maintenance of the SLPU, the components to be replaced include the SLPU case and
the UELP board.
When the surge protector for the antenna system at the BBU side is faulty, you need to replace
it.
When the DBS3900 cables are faulty, you need to replace them promptly. The cables can be
replaced are: transmission cables, signal cables, and RF jumpers.

The preparations for the DBS3900 site maintenance cover the activities of obtaining site
information, selecting maintenance items, and arranging for tools and spare parts.
Arrange for the tools and components according to the actual conditions of specified replacement.
The tasks of the routine hardware maintenance of the DBS3900 include: the environmental
maintenance of the equipment room, the maintenance of the power supply system and grounding
system of the BTS, the maintenance of the BBU, the maintenance of the RRU, the maintenance
of cables, and the maintenance of the antenna system.
2.1 Environmental Maintenance Tasks of the Equipment Room
This task enables you to maintain the environment of the DBS3900 equipment room.
2.2 Power Supply System and Grounding System Maintenance Tasks
This describes the maintenance tasks for the power supply system and grounding system of the
DBS3900.
2.3 Maintenance Tasks of the BBU
This describes how to check the surface of the equipment, cleanness of the equipment, and
indicators.
2.4 Maintenance Tasks of the RRU
This describes how to check the surface of the equipment, cleanness of the equipment, and
indicators.
2.5 Maintenance Tasks of the Cables
The maintenance tasks of cables include checking the following items: the cable distribution
and routing, signal cables, Ethernet cables, optical cables, connectors, and sockets.
2.6 Maintenance Tasks of the Antenna System
The tasks of the maintenance of antenna system include checking towers, poles, antennas
(including satellite antennas and RF antennas), and feeders.

When you power on the DBS3900, you need to check the status of the indicators of all the
equipment. When you power off the DBS3900, you can choose the normal power-off or
emergency power-off according to the actual situation.
Prerequisite

Procedure

Step 1 Connect the power cable of the RRU to the output end of the external power equipment, and

After the RRU is powered on, do not look directly at the beam from the optical module without
taking the necessary eye protection measures.
Step 2 Wait for three to five minutes and then check the status of indicators on the RRU. Table 3-2
lists the meanings of the indicators on the RRU3702. Table 3-3 lists the meanings of the
indicators on the RRU3701C. Table 3-4 lists the meanings of the indicators on the RRU3703.
Step 3 Proceed with the next step according to the status of the indicator.

Context
The RRU can be powered off in a normal situation or in an emergency. The handling methods
in these two situations are the same.
l In a normal situation: The RRU needs to be powered off when you swap the equipment or
anticipate a territorial power outage.
l In an emergency: The RRU needs to be powered off in an emergency, such as fire, smoke,
or water immersion.
Procedure
Step 1 Turn off the switch of the external power supply equipment of the RRU.
NOTE
The external power supply equipment of the RRU is the APM or DCDU. Thus, you need to turn off the
power switch of the RRU through the APM or DCDU.

The faulty BBU3900 components must be replaced promptly. The components that can be
replaced are the BBU case, boards, modules, and optical module. All boards are hot-swappable.
When boards are running, abnormal power-off of boards will not cause damage to the hardware
and software.
Prerequisite
l The required tools and materials are ready. The tools and materials are the ESD wrist strap
or ESD gloves, M6 screwdriver, and ESD box or bag.
l The quantity and models of the components to be replaced are confirmed and new cases
are ready.
l Keep the keys ready for use after you obtain site admission.
Context
Replacing the BBU case disrupts all the services carried by the BS. Therefore, the BBU case
must be replaced within 20 minutes.
Procedure
Step 1 Inform the administrator of the M2000 that the BBU case needs to be replaced and ask the
administrator to perform the following operations:
1. Obtain the BTS data configuration file by referring to Backing Up Configuration Data.
2. If necessary, transfer the services carried by the boards in the BBU.
3. Change the ESN to that of the new BBU case by referring to DHCP Parameter Preparation.
Step 2 Power off the BBU by referring to 3.2 Powering Off the BBU.
Step 3 Wear the ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
CAUTION
When performing the replacement, take proper ESD prevention measures, for example, wear
ESD wrist straps or gloves to prevent boards, modules, and electronic components from being
destroyed by static discharge from the human body.
Step 4 Record the connection positions of all the cables connected to the boards in the BBU case.
Step 5 Disconnect the cables from the boards in the BBU case.
Step 6 Loosen the four M6 screws on the BBU case and then remove the BBU case, as shown in Figure
4-1.
NOTE
The procedure of replacing the BBU case with regularly installed mounting ears and that of replacing the
BBU case with reversely installed mounting ears are the same. In the preceding figure, the BBU is in a 19-
inch space and the mounting ears are regularly installed.
Step 7 Remove all the boards in the faulty BBU case, install the boards to the new BBU case, and then
install filler panels to the idle slots.
Step 8 Install the new BBU case, fasten the screws on the case [torque: 2 N.m (17.70 lbf.in.)], and then
install the cables according to the recorded positions.
NOTE
If the mounting ears of the BBU case to be replaced are reversely installed, you need to install the mounting
ears to the new BBU case in the same way. See the DBS3900 WiMAX Quick Installation Guide
(RRU3702&RRU3703) for the procedure of reversely installing the mounting ears.
Step 10 Determine whether the new BBU case is functional according to the status of indicators of the
boards in the BBU.
NOTE
Step 11 Inform the administrator of the M2000 that the hardware replacement is complete and ask the
administrator to confirm that the boards and modules in the BBU do not generate any alarms.
Step 12 Remove the ESD wrist strap or gloves and put the tools away.

condition.
Procedure
Step 1 Inform the administrator of the M2000 that the BMPT needs to be replaced and ask the
administrator to perform the following operations:
1. Obtain the BTS data configuration file by referring to Backing Up Configuration Data.
2. If necessary, transfer the services carried by the boards in the BBU.
CAUTION
When performing the replacement, take proper ESD prevention measures, for example, wear
ESD wrist straps or gloves to prevent boards, modules, and electronic components from being
destroyed by static discharge from the human body.

This figure is only for your reference. Determine the actual configuration positions according to the onsite
condition.
Procedure
Step 1 Inform the administrator of the M2000 that the BBBI needs to be replaced. If necessary, ask the
administrator to transfer the services carried by the board.
CAUTION
When performing the replacement, take proper ESD prevention measures, for example, wear
ESD wrist straps or gloves to prevent boards, modules, and electronic components from being
destroyed by static discharge from the human body.
Step 5 Inform the administrator of the M2000 that the hardware replacement is complete and ask the
administrator to run the DSP BRDVER command to check whether the BootROM version and
software version of the new board are correct.
If the software version is incorrect, upgrade the BS software. For details of the procedures, see
the DBS3900 WiMAX Upgrade Guide.
Step 6 Determine whether the new BBBI is functional according to the status of the indicators. In the
normal state, the RUN indicator of the board blinks at 0.5 Hz (on for 1s and off for 1s).
NOTE
Step 7 Remove the ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves and put the tools away.

UPEU
l If no backup UPEU is configured, replacing the UPEU powers off the BBU and disrupts
services. Therefore, the UPEU must be replaced within 10 minutes.
Procedure
Step 1 Inform the administrator of the M2000 that the UPEU needs to be replaced. If necessary, ask
the administrator to back up or transfer the services carried by the module.
Step 2 Power off the BBU by referring to 3.2 Powering Off the BBU.
Step 3 Wear the ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
WARNING
When performing the replacement, take proper ESD prevention measures, for example, wear
ESD wrist straps or gloves to prevent boards, modules, and electronic components from being

Procedure
Step 1 Wear the ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
WARNING
When performing the replacement, take proper ESD prevention measures, for example, wear
ESD wrist straps or gloves to prevent boards, modules, and electronic components from being
destroyed by static discharge from the human body.
Step 2 Record the connection positions of all the cables connected to the board.
Step 3 Disconnect the monitoring cables and alarm cables from the UEIU, as shown in Figure 4-9.
Step 4 Loosen the two screws on the panel by using the M3 screwdriver and then remove the UEIU,
as shown in Figure 4-10.

Step 5 Install the new board, fasten the screws on the board [torque: 0.6 N.m (5.31 lbf.in.)], and then
install the cables.
Step 6 Inform the administrator of the M2000 that the hardware replacement is complete and ask the
administrator to confirm that the board does not generate any alarms.
Step 7 Remove the ESD wrist strap or gloves and put the tools away.

Procedure
Step 1 Wear the ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
CAUTION
When performing the replacement, take proper ESD prevention measures, for example, wear
ESD wrist straps or gloves to prevent boards, modules, and electronic components from being
destroyed by static discharge from the human body.
Step 2 Loosen the two M3 screws on the panel and then remove the FAN, as shown in Figure 4-12.

CAUTION
If one or more fans in the FAN are running, do not touch the running fans when removing the
FAN.
Step 3 Install the new module, fasten the screws on the new module [torque: 0.6 N.m (5.31 lbf.in.)],
and then install the cables.
Step 4 Determine whether the new module is functional according to the status of indicators. In the
normal state, the START indicator of the FAN blinks at 0.5 Hz (on for 1s and off for 1s).
NOTE
Step 5 Inform the administrator of the M2000 that the replacement is complete and ask the administrator
to confirm that the module does not generate any alarms.
Step 6 Remove the ESD wrist strap or gloves and put the tools away.

Procedure
Step 1 Inform the administrator of the M2000 that the UTRP needs to be replaced. If necessary, ask
the administrator to back up or transfer the services carried by the board.
CAUTION
When performing the replacement, take proper ESD prevention measures, for example, wear
ESD wrist straps or gloves to prevent boards, modules, and electronic components from being
destroyed by static discharge from the human body.
Step 3 Record the connection positions of all the cables connected to the board.
Step 4 Disconnect the transmission cable from the UTRP. If the surge protection board is configured,
you need to disconnect the surge protection transfer cable, as shown in Figure 4-14.
Step 5 Loosen the two M3 screws on the panel and then remove the UTRP, as shown in Figure 4-15.

Step 6 Ensure that the settings of the DIP switches on the new board are consistent with the settings of
the removed board. If necessary, refer to UTRP for the information of the DIP switches.
Step 7 Install the new board, fasten the screws on the board [torque: 0.6 N.m (5.31 lbf.in.)], and then
install the cables.
Step 8 Determine whether the new board is working properly according to the status of indicators. In
the normal state, the RUN indicator of the board blinks at 0.5 Hz (on for 1s and off for 1s).
NOTE
Step 9 Inform the administrator of the M2000 that the replacement is complete and ask the administrator
to confirm that the board does not generate any alarms.
Step 10 Remove the ESD wrist strap or gloves and put the tools away.

Step 3 Disconnect the GPS clock signal cable from the USCU, as shown in Figure 4-17.
Step 4 Loosen the two M3 screws on the panel and then remove the USCU, as shown in Figure 4-18.
Step 5 Install the new board, fasten the screws on the board [torque: 0.6 N.m (5.31 lbf.in.)], and then
install the cables.
Step 6 Determine whether the new board functions properly according to the status of the indicators.
In the normal state, the RUN indicator of the board blinks at 0.5 Hz (on for 1s and off for 1s).
NOTE
Step 7 Inform the administrator of the M2000 that the replacement is complete and ask the administrator
to perform the following operations:
1. Load and activate the software version of the USCU.
2. Confirm that the board does not generate any alarms.
Step 8 Remove the ESD wrist strap or gloves and put the tools away.

software version, restoring services takes about 30 minutes after the new RRU3702/
RRU3703 is powered on.
l If the software of the original RRU3702 is V300R003C00 and it is replaced with an
RRU3702 whose software is in an earlier version, the software of the new RRU3702 is
automatically upgraded to V300R003C00. In this case, if the transmission rate over the
CPRI port of the new RRU3702 is 3.84 Gbit/s, restoring services takes about 35 minutes
after the new RRU2702 is powered on. The maximum time for restoring services is about
55 minutes.

Step 1 Inform the administrator of the M2000 that the RRU needs to be replaced. If necessary, ask the

Step 6 Disconnect the cables connected to the bottom of the RRU cabling cavity.
Step 7 Use the M4 screwdriver to loosen the captive screws on the two spring plates on the main fixture,
as shown in Figure 5-1.
Step 8 Use the M4 screwdriver to tighten the two screws on the transfer piece of the RRU [torque: 4.8
N.m (42.48 lbf.in.)], as shown in Figure 5-2. Lift up the screws to loosen the connection between
the transfer piece and the main fixture. Then, lift up the RRU to remove it.
WARNING
Do not lift up the screws by force. You can use a rubber hammer to hit the bottom of the RRU
until the connection between the transfer piece and the main fixture is loosened, as shown in
Figure 5-3.
Step 9 Install the new RRU, tighten the captive screws on the two spring plates on the main fixture
[torque: 4.8 N.m (42.48 lbf.in.)], and then take waterproof measures.
Step 10 Connect the cables back to the RRU.
Step 11 Close the cabling cavity of the RRU and tighten the screws on the cover plate of the cabling
cavity [torque: 1.4 N.m (12.39 lbf.in.)].
Step 12 Power on the RRU by referring to 3.3 Powering On the RRU.
Step 13 Determine whether the new RRU is functional according to the status of the indicators on the
RRU. In the normal state, the RUN indicator of the RRU blinks at 0.5 Hz (on for 1s and off for
1s).

Step 14 Inform the administrator of the M2000 that the hardware replacement is complete and ask the
administrator to confirm that no alarms are generated.
Step 15 Remove the ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves and put the tools away.

disconnected from the faulty RRU3701C and then connected to the new RRU3701C, and the
services are resumed.

and then lift the shell higher to remove the tabs from the anchor slots on the attachment plate.
Step 5 Align the new shell of the RRU3701C to the positioning holes on the attachment plates of the
RRU3701C and fit the tabs on the shell into the anchor slots of the attachment plates.
Step 6 Tighten the two captive screws at the bottom of the shell of the RRU3701C to fix the shell.
Step 7 Lift up the sliding blades on the right of the RRU3701C shell to secure the RF jumper. Hold the
sliding blades and tighten the captive screws of the blades.

The AC/DC power equipment is applicable to the AC cabinet and converts 220 V AC input to
-48 V DC output.
8.3 Replacing the DCDU
The DCDU is the DC power distribution unit. Replacing the DCDU cuts off the power supply
to the site and therefore disrupts the services.
8.4 Replacing the AC Surge Protection Box
The AC surge protection box protects the input power supply from surge.

Context
Powering off the RRU before replacing the RRU RF jumper disrupts all the services carried by
the sector carriers associated with the RRU.
NOTE

jumpers.
Procedure
Step 1 Wear the ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
CAUTION
When performing the replacement, take proper ESD prevention measures, for example, wear
ESD wrist straps or gloves to prevent boards, modules, and electronic components from being
destroyed by static discharge from the human body.
Step 2 Turn off the switch of the external power supply to the RRU.
Step 3 Remove the waterproof insulation tapes on RF ports of the RRU and of the antenna system.
Step 4 Remove the faulty RF jumpers from the RF port of the RRU.
Step 5 Remove the faulty RF jumpers from the RF ports of the antenna system.
Step 6 Connect the connector of the new RF jumper to the RF port on the RRU.
Step 7 Wrap the joints at the RRU RF ports with a layer of insulation tape. Wind the tape around the
joint from top down.
Step 8 Wrap the insulation tape with three layers of waterproof tape.
NOTE
The tape is wrapped in the following sequence: from top down, from bottom up, and then from top down.
For every two adjacent tape layers, the tape on the upper layer overlaps about half the width of the tape on
the lower layer.
Step 9 Wrap the waterproof tape with three layers of insulation tape. For details about how to wrap the
insulation tape, see Step 8.
Step 10 Mount the matched load on the idle RF port. Use the waterproof insulation tape and PVC tape
to wrap the joint between the matched load and the RF port in the same way as described in the
previous steps.
Step 12 Wrap the joint at the RF ports of the antenna system with the waterproof insulation tape.
Step 13 Stick the color rings. The new color rings should have the same color as the color rings on the
old RF jumpers.
Step 14 Turn on the switch of the external power supply to the RRU.

Procedure
Step 1 Wear the ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
CAUTION

destroyed by static discharge from the human body.
Step 2 Turn off the switch of the external power supply to the RRU3701C.
Step 3 Open the door of the RRU3701C case or dismantle the RRU3701C shell.
Step 4 Remove the waterproof tape at the RF ports of the RRU3701C and the antenna system.
Step 5 Remove the faulty RF jumper from the RF port of the RRU3701C.
Step 6 Remove the faulty RF jumper from the RF port of the antenna system.
Step 7 Connect the connector of the new RF jumper to the RF port of the RRU3701C.
Step 8 Wrap the joint of the RF port of the RRU3701C with the waterproof insulation tape.
NOTE
Wrap the joint spirally upward, downward, and then upward again. That is, the joint is wrapped by three
layers of waterproof insulation tape. For every two adjacent tape layers, the tape on the upper layer overlaps
about half the width of the tape on the lower layer.
Step 9 Wrap up the waterproof insulation tape with the PVC tape in the same way.
Step 10 Mount the 50-ohm matched load on the idle RF port. Use the waterproof insulation tape and
PVC tape to wrap the joint between the matched load and the RF port in the same way as
described in the previous steps.
Step 11 Connect the RF jumper to the antenna system.
Step 12 Wrap the joint at the RF ports of the antenna system with the waterproof insulation tape.
Step 13 Stick the color rings. The new color rings should have the same color as the color rings on the
old RF jumpers.
Step 14 Turn on the switch of the external power supply to the RRU3701C.
Step 15 Lock the door of the RRU3701C case or reinstall the RRU3701C shell after ensuring that the
RRU3701C is operational.
