on October 10, 1923) Military and Peruvian politician, hero of the La Breña Campaign against the
Chilean occupation of Peru during the War of the Pacific (1879-1883) and twice president of the
Peruvian Republic (1886-1890 and 1894-1895) during the Second Militarism. He entered the army
very young and took part in several of the civil clashes of the time at the service of Ramón Castilla.
Ascended to captain, he went to the border when war broke out with Ecuador. During the
government of General Pezet he was banished to Chile for his opposition to the president; when
he was allowed to return to the country, he supported the coup d'etat of Mariano Ignacio Prado
and participated in the Combat of Callao or May 2, 1866, in which Peru defeated the Spanish fleet.

el 10 de octubre de 1923) Militar y político peruano, héroe de la Campaña de La Breña contra la
ocupación chilena de Perú durante la Guerra del Pacífico (1879-1883) y dos veces presidente de la
República peruana (1886-1890 y 1894-1895) durante el Segundo Militarismo. Ingresó muy joven
en el ejército y tomó parte en varios de los enfrentamientos civiles de la época al servicio de
Ramón Castilla. Ascendido a capitán, acudió a la frontera cuando estalló la guerra con el Ecuador.
Durante el gobierno del general Pezet fue desterrado a Chile por su oposición al presidente;
cuando le fue permitido regresar al país, apoyó el golpe de Estado de Mariano Ignacio Prado y
participó en el Combate del Callao o del 2 de mayo de 1866, en el que Perú derrotó a la flota
española.
