Remember: You are not expected to understand every word. Focus on the entire story. Try to understand what is happening; why, when, and where it is happening; and who is involved.

STRATEGY #2 Try to understand the complete meaning of the statement. ◦ Recognize common phrases used in everyday situations. ◦ Listen carefully for negatives because they completely change the meaning of the phrase.
