Commanding Officer
Families and Friends of CLR-15(FWD),
Well … another month is under our belt here in Helmand Province, Afghanistan – and what a month it’s been!
We’ve been incredibly busy preparing for the onset of the “winter months” – it’s starting to get REALLY cold at night (down into
the 30s) and we’re bracing for some rainy days in the months ahead. While we don’t expect “significant” amounts of rain – any pre-
cipitation received will turn our sandy “roads” to mud; making movement a bit slower for our convoys and a lot more challenging for
those of us who work outside on a daily basis !
We greatly appreciate all the Halloween candy that was sent, as well as all the holiday decorations – it really helps us to feel closer
to home and you all.
We’ve had a few visitors come our way – there was the American Idol concert two weeks ago; Operation Outback came and served
us steaks, blooming onions and corn on the cob; some professional golfers came out for “pointers on our sand game”; and Mark
Wahlberg will be here in a few weeks to debut his new movie – so there’s no shortage of entertainment on those few occasions
when we can break away from the daily grind.
For Thanksgiving, the SgtMaj and I had the opportunity to serve ham, turkey, prime rib, cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes,
green bean casserole and yams to most of our folks here at Camp Leatherneck. The companies were also able to send some steaks
out to our Marines and Sailors at the forward operating bases – we’ve got some really good pictures of the grills that were manu-
factured for the event and the feedback we received included, “…best meal I’ve had out here…” and “…in the top 5 steak dinners
I’ve had -- EVER !”
We welcomed a new surgical company to “our family” this month – and continue to work with our brother and sister Marines from
the East Coast and Hawaii; who have recently arrived in theater and taken over for units redeploying home for the holidays.
The volume of mail is really starting to pick up as the holidays approach – we’re working through all the challenges associated with
that … and we greatly appreciate everyone’s patience with the challenging, difficult and sometime frustrating situations created by
dealing with the post office. We’re doing our best to smooth things out and address challenges and issues.
I’d like to wish you all a happy holiday season. It’s not easy being away for the holidays – but our morale is high – thanks in large
part to the sacrifices you are making at home and the incredible support you’re providing.
Thank you for all that you do!
If anyone has any questions or concerns – please let me know.
Semper Fidelis,
Michael Murchison

Sergeant Major
Friends, Families, Fellow Marines & Sailors,
The month of November was a fast and fabulous month. We celebrated our 235th Marine Corps birthday, Veteran’s Day and had a grand
Thanksgiving. This month we had a lot to be thankful for! As we move into another busy month, please be patient with the mail system as well
as the availability of phone lines for your loved one to call home. Your loved ones are kicking butt over here and you should be very proud of
their accomplishments. The Marines & Sailors of this mighty regiment are absolutely outstanding!!! CLR-15 (FWD) would not be successful
without the teamwork that they display on a daily basis. We recently had a combat meritorious promotion board for Sergeant through Lance
Corporal, it was a tough competition. But again your loved ones brought home a gold medal in all ranks.

MERITORIOUS SGT: CPL SHAW, MERITORIOUS CPL: LCPL VALLERO, LCPL WHITESIDE, LCPL DANISH,
LCPL HAGERMAN & LCPL RUGGIERO!!! A Job extremely well done!
Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and warm holiday season.

Real Meaning of Christmas

For most of us, Christmas has many precious memories of times with our
family, friends and traditional activities. But, what is the real meaning of
Christmas? Well, it’s not just about decorated trees, food, parties, caroling,
shopping and gifts. It is really about the one gift. The gift that God gave to us,
His son Jesus Christ. The first Christmas was so special because that night Je-
sus, the Son of God, the Savior of man, was born into this world. Because of
that historical event, Christmas is one of the most important holidays for
Christians.

One way to keep Christ in Christmas, is begin this holy season right now with
Advent, the four weeks before Christmas. The word Advent comes from the
Latin advenio, "to come to," and thus refers to the coming of Christ. This
refers, first of all, to our celebration of Christ's birth at the first Christmas; and
second, to the coming of Christ in our lives by His grace through our faith, and
finally, His Second Coming at the end of time. Advent is a sacred tradition,
and an essential part of the Christmas season.

The Advent wreath with it’s four candles, has the themes of hope, peace, joy,
and love. Lighting the Advent candles each week with a prayer and Scripture
reading, can prepare your household for the real meaning of Christmas.

Blessings,
Chaplain David R. Bradley
Happy 235th Birthday Marines
General Lejeune's Birthday Message
On November 1st. 1921, John A. Lejeune, 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps,
directed that a reminder of the Corps be published by every command, to all Marines
throughout the globe, on the Birthday of the Corps. Since the day, Marines have
continued to distinguish themselves on many battlefields and foreign shores, in war and
peace. On this Birthday of the Corps, therefore, in compliance with the will of the
13th Commandant, Article 38 United States Marine Corps Manual, Edition of 1921, is
published as follows:

"On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of the
Continental Congress. Since that date many thousands of men have borne that name
Marine. In memory of them it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate
the Birthday of our Corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious
history.

The record of our Corps is one which bear comparison with that of the most famous
military organizations in the world's history. During 90 of the 146 years of its existence
the Marine Corps has been in action against the Nation's foes. From the Battle of
Trenton to the Argonne, Marines have won foremost honors in war and in the long era
of tranquility at home generation after generation of Marines have grown gray in war
in both hemispheres, and in every corner of the seven seas so that our country and its
citizens might enjoy peace and security.

In every battle and skirmish since the Birth of the Corps, Marines have acquitted
themselves with the greatest distinction, winning new honors on each occasion until
the term "Marine" has come to signify all that is highest in military efficiency and
soldierly virtue.

This high name of distinction and soldierly repute we who are Marines today have
received from those who preceded us in the Corps. With it we also received from them
the eternal spirit which has animated our Corps from generation and has long been the
distinguishing mark of Marines in every age. So long as that spirit continues to flourish
Marines will be found equal to every emergency in the future as they have been in the
past, and the me of our nation will regard us as worthy successors to the long line of
illustrious men who have served as "Soldiers of the Sea" since the founding of the
Corps."

Families, another month has passed and we are now two months into the deployment.
The Marines and Sailors of Headquarters and Service Company had a busy month. They
continue to show their resiliency with challenges they continuously overcome. The Marines
and Sailors are inspirational, as they often volunteer and are ever ready for missions.
We have two Marines attending Corporal’s course and three others graduated Corpo-
ral’s course. Personnel are devoting much of their “spare time” to improving their martial
arts qualification. We had the martial arts instructors out there whipping it on to train
them. Our Sailors have been busy working on their FMF pin (one has already received his).
This month we have missed some of the major holidays with our families and friends
but we did our best to celebrate those special days with our military family here aboard
Camp Leatherneck. Instead of a fancy Marine Corps Ball in our Dress Blues, we formed up
on November 10th and participated in the 1st Marine Logistics Group cake cutting ceremony.
I truly believe this 235th Marine Corps birthday experience will be one that every one of
the Marines here will have a special memory of. Celebrating the birth of our Corps in a
combat environment lends a great sense of understanding as to why we do what we do.
The very next day we took time to remember our veteran’s. Each of us did this in
their own way. Being on deployment makes it hit home just a little bit more than usual as
to why Veteran’s Day is so special. Now each military member can say they have served in a
foreign country in a time of war. Whether they are out on patrols or supporting units inside
the wire, each member is doing their important job in support of the higher cause.
On Thanksgiving, we shared a special meal at the DFAC (chow hall). We gathered to-
gether, told stories of home, and shared laughs as we filled ourselves with all the favorite
foods of the holiday. The sports fans huddled around the television in to get a glimpse of
the football games. It was a pleasant day to relax and be thankful for you eagerly waiting
for our return.

Happy Birthday Michelle Sturgell – November 5th 2010.

Friends and Families,

The Marines and Sailors of General Support Motor Transport Company continue to inspire and amaze me with their hard
work, professionalism and superior performance. With the days getting shorter and weather getting colder the Marines
and Sailors have taken it in stride and are continuing to accomplish the missions assigned with confidence. The missions
are very important ones and many Marines commands/units rely on General Support Motor Transport Company in order
to complete their own missions. With the added difficulties of weather and seasonal changes, the Marines and Sailors
haven’t skipped a beat in maintaining and striving toward continual job excellence in all they do. I want to extend to all
the friends, families and loved ones a happy holiday season, and to again thank you- for all
your devotion and faithfulness both in thought and generosity by way of all the care
packages received. We are looking forward to the holiday season and are tremendously
thankful for everything we have- outstanding camaraderie and great support networks
both here and from home. I am truly swollen with pride and privileged to be the Com-
manding Officer of these Marines and Sailors and am looking forward to the unending
work efforts from them, and unwavering impression and influence they leave etched on
others.

Families, Veterans, Friends, and Supporters of GSMT Company-

Greetings and Happy Holidays to all from the Helmand Providence, here in Afghanistan! Let me start by saying how extremely proud and
privileged I am to be surrounded by such an exceptional group of professionals- your Marines and Sailors of GSMT Company. All have stead-
ily continued to acquit themselves exceptionally well on the battlefield. These Warriors have been working long and hard in reaching and
accomplishing every assigned mission and task given to them with the utmost determination, success, and esprit de corps. Despite the Holiday
Season inching forward, with missed loved ones, sprits remain high and their flex in protecting each other spirals upward- into an ever so vigi-
lant and totally committed posture. Rest assure, that your Marines and Sailors have displayed and expressed their gratitude for everyone’s
support during this honored time of serving our great nation when our duty calls. Your continued outreached efforts of support, words of en-
couragement, and generosity have played a significant role in the continuation of successes we have had thus far- for that I sincerely thank-you
all.
As one third of our deployment has nearly past, the upcoming months continue to bring a new set of challenges
ahead. Stand strong and honored, that your Marine or Sailor will prevail if faced with adversity through their
diligence in training, the proven levels of competence at which they have continually preformed to date, and
with the support of their fellow Service Members serving side by side with them- tackling and accomplishing
any endeavor that poses a hardship or obstacle with the utmost safety and welfare always at heart and in mind.
Lastly, we are truly grateful for the superior efforts of both those who have dedicated their time and resources
by way of care packages and letters, and of our Family Readiness Officer (FRO), Mrs. Lynda Schubert, serv-
ing as the channel and link that connects our Company with family, friends and loved ones. She can be
reached via email at lynda.schubert@usmc.mil or by phone at 760-725-6750. May I also remind you, that she
is the direct link for GSMT Company only; she stays abreast with updated and current information, concerns,
and/or guidance. Thank-you all once again, for your support and echoed words of encouragement to everyone
here at GSMT Company and Combat Logistics Regiment-15.

Difference between Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day

Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering
and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those
who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also
remembered on Veterans Day, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL
those who served honorably in the military – in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day
is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their
contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all
those who served – not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty.
