TABLE OF CONTENTS
04. RESPONSABILITIES:-
TOOLPUSHER
1. To check and confirm record of "ton-miles" since last cut and total accumulated.
2. To designate a suitable break in operations to slip and cut drill line within ton-mile specified
limits.
3. To inspect regularly drill line for signs of deterioration, which will take precedence over the
slip and cut programme.
4. To send in a sample of drill line ( A minimum of 3mtrs is required to fit into the test machine )
for independent inspection after each slip and cut operation and to Review the Results from the
Independent Inspection in order to maintain the current Ton Mile limit or reduce the Ton Mile
limit based on the report findings.
DRILLER
1. Overall in charge of slipping and cutting procedures.
2. To operate drilling equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
3. To preplan for slipping and cutting and have all tools ready
ASSISTANT DRILLER
1. To calculate and maintain record of "ton miles" since last cut and total accumulated.
2. To have tools and equipment ready to carry out slipping and cutting procedure efficiently.
1. This operation will normally take place with a bit inside casing shoe.
2. The drill string will be set in slips.
3. Perform trip drill by installing the FOSV - leave in "open" position.
4. Line the trip tank up on the well and monitor during slip and cut procedure.
5. Raise travelling block to hang off point.
There should be 28 wraps on the drum (this will leave 12 wraps on the drum when the
Elevator is landed on the drill floor).
6. Retract travelling block so that FOSV can be accessed with the key.
7. Have Derrick man release hang off line from tied back position in Derrick.
8. One man to go up in the man riding belt or the cherry picker to attach the hang off line.(the ACS
can be put into Manual Mode at this point)
9. While the blocks are, being hung off then the draw works front cover can be removed.
10. Clear personnel from the front of the draw works and lower the travelling block slowly until all
the weight has been transferred to the hang off line.
11. One man to count 14 wraps from the anchor side of the drum and mark the line with the paint
stick, meantime 2 other men can start to remove the studs on the dead line anchor and ensure the
hydraulics are lined up to the drill line spooler.
12. The Driller can now select reverse gear minimum throttle and in 'high/high', spool the line off
the drum, 3 men will be required to pull the line off the drum and coil on the drill floor. Pull enough
line off to get the marked section to an accessible area on the drill floor and cut the drill line using
the hydraulic cutter. NOTE: Place a rag over the hydraulic cutter to stop any small particles flying
into operators eyes. Goggles to be worn.
13. Once cut has been made then tie free end off to a suitable anchor point.
14. Driller select reverse gear and pull the rest of the line off until one wrap is left on the drum. Coil
old line up neatly on the drill floor so the Deck Crew can dispose of it in a skip.
15. Position drum so the anchor clamp is accessible and feed the anchor out of the drum.
16. Remove the anchor from the drill line and dispose of the old line.
17. Driller to isolate the draw works by removing the air to the clutches and tripping the crown-o-
matic.
19. Reverse the draw works round until the hole for the drill line is clearly visible at the front of the
drum.
20. Insert the drill line into the drum, only about 2 ft.
21. Select forward gear and slowly turn the drum until the drum anchor is visible.
NOTE: If steps 18, 19 and 20 are implemented then there is no need to place a man in beside the
drum.
22. Pull the drill line through the drum and fit the anchor clamp (ensure step 16 is carried out prior
to working close to the drum). The anchor clamp must be properly orientated in order for it to be
located in the anchor point without inducing a twist in the drill line. Ensure anchor end of drill line
and anchor clamp are cleaned thoroughly. Anchor clamp should be torqued up to 175' lbs dry
with suitable torque wrench and install secondary bulldog grip.
23. Check anchor point inside drum for any damage or wear and install anchor into drum, check
that no more than 6" of drill line protrude from anchor clamp or it may wear the inside of the drum.
24. When anchor has been fitted to drum and checked by the Driller, de-isolate the draw works and
select forward gear. The drill line must be spooled onto the drum as tightly as possible. To ensure
this, utilise the drill line tensioning device horizontally (NOT VERTICALLY) on a tugger line through
a snatch block on the V door Samson post. As the Driller, picks up slowly on the draw works
spooling the drum allow the line to pull through the tensioning device. Bed the line into the drum
grooves with hammer. When coils on drill floor transferred to the drum, remove tensioning device.
Driller to take up slack on drill line and inform the man at the drill line spool to allow drill line to pay
off from the spool.
25. The Driller can begin to spool the new line on the draw works drum, taking care not to raise the
travelling block.
26. Slip 112 ft. of new line on to the drum. (14 wraps).
UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED, PAPER COPIES OF THIS DOCUMENT ARE
UNCONTROLLED

WORK GUIDELINES
1. SAFETY INFORMATION
After the cut off section is unspooled from the drum (and laid down the 'V' door), it must now be
flaked out (coiled or figure of eight) before moving it into the disposal skip.
This task is to be included as one of the steps in the formal Risk Assessment for the operation of
Slipping and Cutting drill line with a Tool Box Talk held prior to commencing this step.
The risk assessment is also to include the hazards associated with broken wires and the
requirement to always ‘hand over hand’ when handling wire.
A competent person must carry out the pre-use inspection of the lifting equipment and accessories.
Ensure the colour code is valid and the SWL of the equipment is adequate for the task.
2. TOOLS
3. PROCEDURE
1) Place the baton down, in an area of sufficient size, to allow the flakes of drill line to be formed.
2) Flake the drill line over the baton.
3) Securely tie off the loose ends of drill line to an adjacent flake.
4) Utilising the space created by the baton, double wrap and choke the sling on to the drill line.
5) Use a crane to place the discarded drill line, complete with the (transit) sling, into
the appropriate skip for backload.
6) Do not attempt to recover the sling.
NOTE: If there is insufficient, space available on the Pipe Deck. This operation may be carried out
on the Rig Floor in line with this guidance.
WARNING:
Never use the crane to suspend the length of 'off-cut' drill line above a waste skip, and manually coil
it into the skip. Such practice may endanger personnel if the drill line slips off the crane whip line.
