GARDEN PAVING
Marshalls and sustainability

Marshalls is leading by example with initiatives that

balance the economic, community and environmental
factors that produce a more sustainable and
ethical business.
See the dedicated website at www.marshalls.co.uk/sustainability

Economics, energy and the environment

Marshalls has policies for energy, climate change and the environment that are reviewed annually:

• It is committed to reduce emissions by 80% by 2050 in line with Government targets

• 90% of Marshalls waste in 2008 was reused or recycled
• 85% of Marshalls transport now uses more fuel efficient engines with added bio fuel and
reduced greenhouse gas emissions

• To achieve Government Future Water targets requires even more harvesting and recycling and
product innovation like permeable paving

• Marshalls aims to have biodiversity action plans at every site by 2012. Inspired by the UK first
Biodiversity Benchmark accredited to a working site at Marshalls Maltby site in 2007 and our
Stoke Hall Quarry in 2009.

Community responsibility
Giving something back is actively encouraged at Marshalls whether the
tens of thousands donated to UK charities through payroll giving or the voluntary
community projects our staff often get involved in.

One campaign Marshalls is delighted to support is the

RHS Campaign for School Gardening, encouraging a new
generation of gardeners who will surely be our customers
of the future.
Joining forces with Living Streets, a national charity dedicated
to improving people-friendly public spaces led to more than 50
Marshalls’ staff trained in community street auditing to provide
feedback to create better street design.

SUSTAINABILITY
It’s about producing landscaping
products in environmental and
ethically responsible ways
gardens & driveways

Ethics at the heart of sustainability

As a leading importer of Natural Stone into the UK, Marshalls feels a keen responsibility for the
welfare of those employed, however indirectly, in Marshalls global supply chain.

It was a prime reason why Marshalls was the first member in the landscaping industry to join
the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI). Marshalls continues to be an enthusiastic member of this
unique organisation which brings together global companies, trade unions and NGOs to deliver
solutions for ethical trade which have tangible benefits for the workers involved.

Work with the ETI focuses on the ETI Base Code, which is based on the International Labour
Organisation’s conventions as follows:

ETI Base Code

• No-one should be forced to work
• Workers should be able to join and form trade unions
• Working conditions should be safe and healthy
• Child labour should not be used
• Working hours should not be excessive
• Wages should be enough to live on and provide some discretionary income
• Workers should be treated equally, regardless of their sex, ethnic group, religion or
political opinions
• Where possible, workers should be provided with regular employment
• Workers should not be verbally, physically or sexually abused or disciplined.

Workers in India are provided with

the correct safety equipment

Marshalls also continues to work with and fund Hadoti Hast Shilp Sansthan, an Indian NGO
helping to improve the lives of vulnerable families working in the quarries around Bhundi and
Kota in Rajasthan. Progress in the areas of education for the children and health camps for the
families of migrant workers has been significant.

FAIRSTONE® by Marshalls - Important

In the interest of clarity, Marshalls is labelling all of its exclusive
imported stone ‘FAIRSTONE’. Concerned customers are assured that
all Marshalls stone comes from ethical sources and no child labour
will have been used in creating this product,

Putting a carbon label on products allows Marshalls to
more easily measure future reductions, and their
customers to understand a product’s carbon footprint
and thereby make an informed choice when they buy.
Marshalls has fully committed to achieving the new
Climate Change Act to reduce our carbon emissions
by 80% by 2050. Over 40% of CO2 emissions in the UK
come from actions by individuals*, so it’s essential we all
do our bit.

The size of soakaway required will vary depending on a number of factors.

The Marshalls Living Street

‘The Marshalls Living Street’ was a community of small
gardens, each themed to show the public just what
could be achieved in small urban spaces whatever the
different tastes and aspirations of the residents. It was
built very much with eco-friendly living in mind. It even
had its own community newspaper to explain the topical
environmental issues that had inspired the gardens.

Visitors particularly warmed to the small but individual

character of each garden; it gave them ideas for planting, paths and walling materials on a
domestic scale to which everyone could relate.

Your guide to ensure

a professional installation
Finding a good installer is essential
as you will rely on their advice,
product knowledge and workmanship
to achieve the first class garden
or driveway you desire.
Here are 10 simple rules to follow to ensure your
project will be trouble free.

1 Plan early - reputable installers are in demand

and will need plenty of notice. Be wary of installers
who can start tomorrow.

2 Always get more than one quotation - never

accept a verbal estimate and obtain at least three
written quotes. Make sure all quotes are on a
like-for-like basis for a correct comparison.

3 For peace of mind choose a Marshalls Register

Installer. They are independent contractors not
employed or paid any commissions, but they are
regularly assessed and agree to follow Marshalls own
code of practice and installation specification.

Utility Paving Budget no-nonsense

paving ideal for utility areas
CO2
Per m2

Utility Paving
• Not recommended for decorative patio areas
• Can be laid on a mortar bed with joints of 8-10mm, pointed
with mortar
• Units 450 x 450 or smaller can be laid on screeded sand with
joints of 2-5mm filled with jointing sand
• On no account should it be laid butt jointed
• Being a ‘budget’ product, colours and face finishes will vary
and there is limited protection when in transit, so the surface
may bear scratch marks
• Utility Paving is manufactured at our regional factories for
distribution within local areas, so pavings from different
factories should not be mixed on site
• As with all concrete products, Utility Paving may temporarily
suffer from efflorescence early in its life (see p.170)

Choosing an approved

REGISTER INSTALLERS
To install your Marshalls paving we
recommend local professionals -
members of Marshalls own
approved Register

Examples of the installation quality of

Marshalls Register Members
If you need help with installation, the last thing you want is for poor
workmanship to turn your ideal garden or driveway into a complete
nightmare. Don’t worry! Marshalls can provide you with a list of approved
and recommended local installers for you to contact.

Professionalism
The Marshalls Register of Approved Landscape Contractors and Driveway
Installers is a national network of recommended professionals. Although they
are not employed by Marshalls, they agree to abide by our own installation
guidelines and are all vetted by Marshalls assessors. In this way, we make sure
that your garden or driveway is installed properly, with great attention paid to
minimising mess and disruption, so you can be sure of a good job!
Living Landscapes Southern, Hambrook
Reassurance
When you use a Register Member, you can be sure to receive:
• Written confirmation of any quotation
• An estimated start date
• A reasonable estimate of the time required to do the job
• The opportunity to take the Hard Landscape Guarantee. This covers failure
of product for 10 years and the workmanship for 5 years
• The guarantee is obtained via the Register Member who will ask you to
sign the request form to confirm your total satisfaction
• The fee for the guarantee is £50 (+VAT) per £5,000 of the installed value
• Upon receipt of the correctly completed request form and the fee,
Marshalls will send you your guarantee usually within 5 days
Penrhyn Paving, Penrhyndeudraeth
• Always request written quotations. We recommend more than one as
service levels vary and the cheapest is not always the best. Make sure
each company quotes on a like-for-like basis.

How to spot a ‘cowboy’
If they come knocking because they ‘just happen to be in the area’ - be wary
Genuine Marshalls Register Installers will never cold call. If they claim to be
genuine Marshalls Register Installers, check with us.

If they say they can ’start tomorrow’- be wary

Reputable installers are in demand and may require several weeks’ notice.

Never accept a verbal estimate

Insist on a written quotation. Quotes should be written on headed paper with
an address and telephone number, not just a mobile number.

If you accept the quote, request written confirmation

A ‘cowboy’ will be reluctant to do this, however a written contract is essential.

If you need help with installation, the last thing you want is for poor

and recommended local installers for you to contact.

Professionalism

How to spot a ‘cowboy’
If they come knocking because they ‘just happen to be in the area’ - be wary
Genuine Marshalls Register Installers will never cold call. If they claim to be
genuine Marshalls Register Installers, check with us.

If they say they can ’start tomorrow’- be wary

Reputable installers are in demand and may require several weeks’ notice.

Never accept a verbal estimate

Insist on a written quotation. Quotes should be written on headed paper with an
address and telephone number, not just a mobile number.

If you accept the quote, request written confirmation

A ‘cowboy’ will be reluctant to do this, however a written contract is essential.

Remember
The greater part of the cost of ALL driveways will be the installation.
Correct preparation, drainage, aggregates, screeding, laying and
finishing are essential. Taking any shortcuts in preparation below
ground will inevitably lead to early failure of the surface. It may also
contravene current planning laws if correct drainage provision has
not been made.
Marshalls always recommends employing a qualified installer,
preferably one approved from The Marshalls Register

Premier Aluminium Greenhouses

Established for over 60 years, Robinsons greenhouses
have long been the benchmark against which other aluminium
greenhouses are measured. Robinsons put
their success down to good design – and the secret of
good design is all in the details.

One thing for which Robinsons greenhouses are particularly

noted is their strength. Robinsons use over 25% more
aluminium than most other greenhouses of a comparable size.
Robinsons greenhouses are renowned for coping with galeforce
winds and heavy snowfall as competitor products falter. Plus,
for added strength and safety, 4mm toughened glass to BS6206
Class A is supplied as standard.

Robinsons greenhouses come in a choice of maintenance-free

finishes, so you can spend your time growing your plants, not
treating your buildings.
