Topic/Lesson
A History of Science and Technology in the Philippines by Olivia C. Caoili

1. Difficult Concepts(What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. One of the concepts that we found difficult to understand was why
the government did not support Science and Technology in the
Philippines, when it was for the future and the betterment of the
country and its countrymen.
ii. The second concept we found difficult to understand was why there
was a lack of learning institutes and education here in the Philippines,
and who really helped nurture it: The Spaniards or the Americans?
iii. Another difficult concept was if the Filipinos actually benefited and
prospered from all of those archaeological finds and trades and
inventions during the Pre-Colonial Period.

2. Insights(What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/

activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, we thought that

Science and Technology did not become a thing here in the Philippines
until the technological advancement where the computers came in.
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, we now
think/realize that a lot of developments in Science and Technology had
occur even before the Spaniards colonized the Philippines.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, we thought that

the schools back then were already equipped with the necessary
amenities and such. However, reading the article/understanding the
lesson, we now think/realize that so many of the schools mentioned were
ill-equipped and lacked amenities such as biological laboratories,
chemical laboratories, libraries etc.

iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I though that this is
about how the Philippines modernized, like is the contribution of
colonization in term of technology or what's in our mind a thing.
Something that is only tangible, something that we can touch or use.
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now
think/realize that this is something about the development of science
and technology in the Philippines, this talks about the foundation, the
building, on how our country modernized and being able to be
centralized in terms of economy, which involve different industries,
education, technology, government and science. And how all of this
innovate within the colonialism.

3. Questions(What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas

you want more explanations about?
i. Without colonialism do you think it is possible that Philippines will have
this kind of Status in terms of Science and Technology?
ii. Why do you think Philippine government did not pay attention that
much in developing science and technology at the time of Spanish
and American colonialism?
iii. Is it possible for the country to not focus on education but still
developing?
