CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Education plays a very crucial role in securing economic and social progress and improving

income distribution. Education plays a vital role in human development and improvement of the

individual and to the society. It is the key that opens the door to a range of possibilities for advancement,

for the benefit of both the individual and country. Likewise, it helps in shaping the life of an individual.

However, Education in every sense is one of the fundamental factors of development. No country

can achieve sustainable economic development without substantial investment in human capital.

Education enriches people’s understanding of themselves and of the world. It improves the quality of

their lives and leads to broad social benefits to individuals and society. Education raises people’s

productivity and creativity and promotes entrepreneurship and technological advances.

Nowadays, Philippine’s education curriculum has entered the k-12 program that provided in any

school to add an extra two year of high school which calls senior high school that given an high

education to the students and proved a strand to the student to pick for their ideal course in the future.

For example of a strand is HUMMS, GAS, ABM, STEM and TVL. Give the student to know much better

for their dreams to achieve like programming that belongs to ICT course in TVL strand. Many student

in this generation welling to build a new technology or a new system to develop to help any single

person like a guiding or assisting in life.

The research focuses in awareness of students about programming. Without it, computers, video

games, the internet, and even cell phone would not exist. Almost everything we use has to do with

technology, and computer programmers are needed in order to make that happen. Computer

programming is one of the most challenging and difficult strand in the world. Someone easily quits when

things get hard or when something is not working the way they want it to will not succeed in computer
programming. It takes a lot of time, efforts and dedication in order to complete the task needed in

programming.

Programming is the act of understanding a problem, formulating a solution, and writing down the

solutions to solve the problem. Almost everything we use was undeniably has to do with technology,

and programming is necessary in order to make those happen. http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/computer-

programming.html

As stated in Republic Act No.10844 otherwise known as the "Department of Information and

Communications Technology Act of 2015 which was, "The Department of Information and

Communications Technology (DICT) shall be the primary policy, planning, coordinating, implementing,

and administrative entity of Executive Branch of the government that will plan, develop, and promote

the national ICT agenda".

Technology nowadays enables design, media production, self-expression, research, analysis,

communication, collaboration, and on top of that is programming or computer programming which the

driving force of various types of technology. Interacting with these technological learning environments

will support the development of deeper learning skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, and

inquiry by continually study and experimentation which might lead to new discovery. Our technology in

present day create a lot of opportunities that has to do with human intervention yet it was under

improvement and simulation of incoming programmers in the future or next generation so imagine how

worth studying the programming to the changes they might bring to our present technology where there

still a bit of impossibility and unattainable for human capability.

In addition, Information System (IS) which refers to the increasing utilization of technology,

gather, process, store, use and distributing information are still in the state of continuous development

as it undergo in both responsive sides of technological innovation and along with its mutual interaction

and correlation with human society. (https://www.britannica.com/topic/information-system)

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

As stated to R.A. no. 10533 “An act enhancing the Philippine basic education system by

strengthening its curriculum and increasing the number of years for basic education appropriating funds

therefore and for other purposes”

In this public act section 4 – “enhance basic education program”. It was all about the k-12

program and process.

In having k-12 program in Philippines may help people to enhance their skills in choosing their

future courses to their future workplace. The K to 12 program has many division in choosing their future

courses stated by Elfren S. Cruz (The Philippine Star). There are many tracks to choose and each track

have its own strand. (https://www.philstar.com/opinion/2015/03/15/1433801/phl-needs-k-12-now)

Some tracks covered the College preparation (Academic Track), Job-ready skills (Technical-

Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) Track), Physical education and recreation (Sports Track), and Design,

performance, and creative industry (Arts and design Track). And each tract have their own designed

strand. (https://www.edukasyon.ph/courses/senior-high-tracks)

Academic track this is to prepare college courses. Choosing this track means you are looking

forward to go to college. This track will help you prepare yourself for the subject specialization of the

College course you will take in the future. You have 4 strand in this track like General Academic Stand

(GAS), Humanities and Social Science (HUMSS) Strand, Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics (STEM) Strand, Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) Strand.

Technical vocational livelihood Track is if you are really not sure if you will be able to pursue any

degree after senior high or if you want to earn money immediately after graduation, then this track is

for you. Even without college, technical vocational livelihood track will equip you with job-ready skills in

the future.
This track also invests primarily on skills that can gain you requisite COCs (Certificates of

Competency) and NCs (National Certifications) which would be essential when looking for better carrier

opportunities in agriculture, electronics, and trade. This is also important when applying abroad where

the skills would prepare you as you join workforce. Like programming that you can work even you at

home. Other student known that the programming course is like a CSS (Computer System Services)

or IT (Information Technology) that work outside the computer or repairing a parts of the computer that

except of they thinking about the programming strand.

Programming strand focus on teaching about the process of taking algorithm and encoding it

into a notation, a programming language, so that it can be executed by a computer. It means that the

programming is way of commanding the computer how to do a certain task in a computer. Programming

strand also teaches about how the software or system is running and the basic step in creating a

system. (http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/computer-programming.html)

Programming is a complicated strand and that cause a lot of discussion involving conflicts and

factors among K-12 learners. As technology is increasingly incorporated and provoke around the world,

understanding the implication of using TEL or Technology Enhance Learning. The last two decades

have observed and witnessed the worldwide proliferation of information communication technologies

into the field of education. This led to the potential of the new technological tools to revolutionize an

outmoded education system to better prepare students or learners for the information saga and

accelerating national development. It is important that didn't receive the proper training on how to use

computers because white collar jobs will continue to be available that require proper and complex

training on a computer system just like programming. (https://www.mentimeter.com/blog/interactive-

classrooms/what-is-technology-enhanced-learning-and-why-is-it-important)

There are students may couldn’t know the covered of programming strand so this research or

study aims to aware or to give more information about the programming strand to the students of G –
11 section programming that are entering the school of Teksquad Institute of Information Technology

in Pinugay campus.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

The researcher use the PCK or Pedagonal Content Knowledge theory who created by Lee

Shulman (2006) which focused on knowledge growth in teaching. The PCK is knowledge that

incorporates experienced teachers reformulation of topics content and an experience continually grow

through teaching process. Metaphors can be view as a form of representation implying to the PCK.

These consist of four categorized question which are Why to teach, what to teach, what are student

learning difficulties, and how to teach.

In teaching the teacher aim to nurture the student by stating or showing their content knowledge

and this knowledge grows through the teaching process and experience. It's important for teacher to

deliver their topic along with proper understanding to it before they taught it so that they can provide

feedback and answers to the question might come from student while still addressing the most

complexity and difficulties of a certain topics and the best example is programming. Teaching

programming refers to the last two question of the PCK which are what are the students’ difficulties in

learning and how to teach. This gives classification especially to the teachers of what they must be

ready of and indicate the most difficult topic and provide a better way of teaching that suitable for

student.

Studying programming is the most complicated yet significant and essential knowledge for

everyone who wants to be an I.T expert. Without proper understanding brought by lack of experience

in teaching and lack of interest in learning may be the cause of someone who can’t understand the real

essence of studying programming.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This study was guided in accordance with Conceptual Paradigm consisted by three major

division of Input, Process, Output, and Feedback.

This helps us represent the first frame consisting the conflicts of our respondents the

programming learners and their will to pursue and learn this strand which can be depict in terms of

gender along with age, parent educational attainment, monthly family income, and student

performance. There are four limiting factors that has a big impact in pursuing and learning programming

which refers to lack of interest, misconception, financial problem, and influence by others which was

based to the researchers own understanding and observation in the theory.

The second frame contains steps and processes which the researchers need to undergo in

conducting of survey to this study in order to complete their research.

The output that can be seen in the third frame is the action plan need to initiate to enhance the

will of the students to pursue and learn more about programming and aware others about programming

subject and strand.

The feedback process shows that it is require to continuous study on the learning processes for

students and to enlighten the minds of everyone that they should be inform more about programming

together with the conflicts in pursuing programming and what is the best approach or solution in order

to meet the needs of students on what they have to learn.

STATEMENT OF THE STUDY

In purpose of this study to determine the most considerable factors of confusion and conflict in

learning about programming.

Programming is a core subject within Computer Science curricula and many also considered it

a particularly difficult and challenging subject to learn.

The following sub-problems concerning the students or learners of programming aims to

sought answers of what cause the difficulties in learning and pursuing programming.

1. What are the effects of limiting factors into the student who have pursuing and studying

programming which refers to:

1.1. lack of interest

1.2. misconceptions

1.3. financial problem

1.4. influence by others

2. How are the Grade 11 and 12 students described in terms of:

2.1. Personal information

2.2. Age

2.3. Gender

2.4. Parents Educational Attainment

2.5. Monthly Family Income

2.6. Student’s Performance

3. According to the findings, what are the best action plan may suggest to enhance the will of

programming students to study and pursue programming?

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

The study tested the following null hypothesis that there was no significant difference on

awareness in programming stand with respect to lack of interest, misconception, financial problem and

influence by others In terms of their gender, age, monthly family income and Parents educational

attainment and respondent’s school performance.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study was conducted at Teksquad Institute of Information Technology Pinugay/Kaban

Campus at the School Year of 2019-2020. The research focus on to aware the g-11 programming

students about the programming strand and what are the factors affecting it. The study was based

independently on the idea of reseachers and observation which come up with theory. The study

concludes that the student of programming can be depict in terms of gender along with age, parents

educational attainment, monthly family income, and student performance. Also the limiting factors

which refers to lack of interest, misconception, financial problem and influence by others. This study

concerned of 100% percent of total population of Grade 11 programming which is total of 7 students of

programming students in Teksquad Institute of Information Technology, Pinugay Campus.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be beneficial to the following:

 Discourage learners - “There is no assurance in studying programming of what future career

and opportunity may lead you to but the willingness of someone to achieve their dream could be

their biggest assets to make their own ways to their desired future". Was a common saying to

encourage more of the programming learners to pursue and explore more about programming.

 Upcoming programming learners – this research may empower the evolving role of

programming in our society which might benefits the incoming learners of programming in what

about or background of being a programmer and what conflict they might face to be ready in

early way.

 Researchers - Even the non-programmers could relate in this research for them to aware about

the programming subject and strand. It was an advance learning for them because them

researchers knew at least some of the background of the track we've been chosen and gives as
a clear understanding of the path that lies ahead of us and we can use it as reference in near

future.

 Curriculum Planners - The human ability to solve problems is a special thing that has been a

focus of interest in computer programming and to form solving strategy to complete the given

problems is the important part of programming. This research focuses on the concern about the

process taking place in studying programming because it was a difficult strand to begin with.

Related topics and answers to specific problems may be gain and absorb through this research

with the purpose to enlighten the mind of students and other important people in this society

about the world of programming and the requirements in pursuing this strand.

 Contributor of knowledge - In essence of being a good contributor of knowledge as we conduct

this research to also gain knowledge to further improve ourselves by stating what we learn in

conduction of this research.

 Programming learners - As an aspiring programming learners it's our obligation to make a use

of this research to aid the current situation faced by our fellow learners to provide better

RESEACH METODOLOGHY

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers used descriptive method that is where the study designed to depict the

participants in an accurate way. This method where also answer sampling under scientific design.

This is the best sampling design due to restrictions imposed: each member in the population is given

an equal chance of being included in the sample.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

FOREIGN

Based on Michael Blumenstein (2004) he describes the experience in coordinating a first

year object oriented course. It shows in the course structure a content have evolved to implement and

evaluate an objects as a needed. For student learning outcomes used variety of assessment strategies.

They get back-up by students feedback and performance. He's finding in many institutions around world

has adopted java as the language to first year student. But it need object oriented programming to first

year student because these concepts of object oriented programming are important. It shows major

issue that presented itself was the choice of methodology for teaching object oriented programming. In

teaching methodologies two approaches to teaching objects - object first and structure program first,

with the aid of used references. Finally the authors conclude in this paper group study, feedback of

students is important for learning object oriented concepts understanding and solving their problems.

According to Abdullah Mohd Zin (2006) this article shows the difficulties of learning programming

subjects, through distance learning and e-learning. It describes the implementation of VPP (Virtual Pair

Programming) and effectiveness of VPP in the learning of object oriented programming among

programming learners. The author gives feedback better from this study. It finds delivering all programs

of IT through e-learning is a very challenging task. It also finds students and teachers also suffer from
learning programming problem. This study shows some researchers overcome problems in teaching

and learning programming. It follows different approaches and solution to overcome problems. The

author believes in pair programming to instruct. It seems that pair program is also the most suitable

approach for learning of program in e-learning. In this research finding that most of the learners feel

that the number of learners in a group should be more than two. It currently shows learners activeness

in VPP.

As stated by Stavroula Georgantaki and Symeon Retalis (2007) they describes the educational

tools which can support the instructional process of object oriented design and programming. They

suggest that object oriented programming paradigm is highly important for students. With the use of

such methods some students overcome learning difficulties. They discuss the tool which could

influence the teaching of object oriented design and programming. The software industry exposure to

the object oriented programming has become increasingly important in both academia and industry. It

gives lots of references and strategies for effective ways to teach object oriented programming. The

scope of this paper is which author shows educational tools in object oriented programming. Evaluation

study about the learning effectiveness of these tools has been implemented. For the effective utilization

of educational tools for teaching programming is well documented. They show seminars must be

conducted on OOP.

LOCAL

According to the study of Diane Zak (2008) which titled "An Introduction to Programming with

C++, Filipino Fifth Edition" that this study is distinct from other textbooks because of its unique approach

which gives motivation to students by demonstrating them on why they need to learn the concepts and

skills on the subject of programming. This consist of a concept lesson introducing one or more

programming concepts and an application lesson having a five labs that help the students to fully learn

and master the content taught in the Concept Lesson. Also in this study it tackles the third lesson of

.NET in which students learn how to use .NET C++ commands. This study implement on how to boxed
and summarize important concepts to provide a quick reference for students. A key terms section has

been added to the end of each concept lesson. The text also includes extensive end-of-chapter

material, including Discovery and Debugging Exercises. This study prioritize the young Filipino who are

willing to study programming that's why they gave importance to the learners and provide them an

advance learning which are essential for the improvement of young Filipino programming learners.

As stated by Senate President Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III that he wants the Department of

Education to include teaching code or also known as Computer programming in elementary schools.

Due to prevalence of computers he noted that computer programming is being offered as an "option"

in Senior High School under the Information and Communication Technology Strand of the Technical

Vocational Track. Coding is an essential skill due to prevalence of computers in our daily lives. It should

be treated like reading, writing, and arithmetic not just as a career option he said in a statement.

Pimentel who was a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, elaborated that coding is a way

to introduce to children to concept such as logic and mathematics. "By teaching code we can take

advantage of children fascination with technology to help them learn mathematical concept in manner

that they find it entertaining.”, he also said.

"Coding also teach perseverance and problem solving. In order to write a computer program, it

is require to have an adept understanding at breaking down task in a way that computer could

understand and execute. These things are life skills that might benefit anyone," he added. In addition,

Pimentel said that computer programming is also a way to improve the School performance in science,

technology, engineering, and mathematics branches. Also since many Filipinos own a Smartphone

along with the free Wi-Fi law, it's so easy to download application that can help children to learn and

understand further the computer programming.

According to Gurango J. (2017) former President of the Philippines Software Industry (PSI) and

Gurango Software Corp. (GSC), the very first assessment of competencies of college students in the

Philippines who took major in Information Communication Technology showed that over 50% of those
who took the test lack the most in basic entry-level programming that meet international or globally

acceptable standards. He administered the first Proxor Examinations in the Philippines from October

2015 to September 2016. Proxor is an assessment tool developed by the computer science department

of Carnegie Mellon University in the 1990s. The set of the examinations, which might took as long as

six hours to complete, examinees were require to solve problems by coding, debugging, and compiling

in an IDE environment. IDE or Integrated Development Environment is a type of software that

centralizes basic tools developers need to authorize computer programs.
