Writing your paper: checklist AP
Opmerking: het woord ‘PASSIM’ geeft aan dat de commentaar doorheen heel de paper moet
gecontroleerd worden.
Note: the word ‘PASSIM’ indicates that the comment should be checked throughout the
paper.

#1 Titelblad / title page

Het titelblad moet het volgende bevatten / The title page should contain following elements:

naam student name student

naam docent van het vak (analyse/CS, etc.)
voor masterpapers specifiëren:
• promotor: naam researchdocent
• Artistieke co-promotor: naam
hoofdvakdocent (instrument, zang,
compositie etc.)
name teacher of the course (analysis, CS,
etc.)
Concerning masterpapers, specify:
• Supervisor: name teacher research
• Artistic co-supervisor: name teacher
instrument/voice, composition etc.

naam en jaar van het vak, bv.: name and year of the course, e.g.:
• Analyse 1, hoofdvak • Analysis 1, main course
• Analyse 2 • Analysis 2
• Culturele Stromingen 2 • Culturele Stromingen 2
• Etc. • Etc.

#2 Bronvermelding in voetnoot / Sources in footnote

Vermeld in voetnoot de bron die je raadpleegde, in verkorte vorm, volgens de conventies vermeld in
de Schrijfwijzer, § 5.2.
Mention in a footnote the source you have been consulting, abbreviated, following the
instructions described in the Style Guide, § 5.2.

#3 gebruik van cursief / use of italics

Je gebruikt ‘cursief’ slechts in twee gevallen:
• titels van composities (zonder aanhalingstekens!):
o bv. Die Zauberflöte
o bv. Strijkkwartet op.18, nr.3
• woorden uit een vreemde taal markeren
o bv. het Gesamtkunstwerk bij Wagner
‘Italics’ are used only in two cases:
• titles of compositions (without quotation marks):
o e.g. Die Zauberflöte
o e.g. String Quartet op.18, nr.3

• to mark words from a foreign language:

o e.g. Wagner and his Gesamtkunstwerk

#4 Bibliografie / References
Vermeld in je bibliografie gedetailleerd al je geraadpleegde bronnen, volgens de conventies uit de
Schrijfwijzer, § 5.3.
You should mention in detail in the list of references all the sources consulted, following the
instructions described in the Style Guide, § 5.3.

#5 Aanhalingstekens / Quotation marks

Je gebruikt ‘enkele aanhalingstekens’ om een woord op een of andere manier te benadrukken (het is
dus een alternatief voor vet).
Je gebruikt ‘dubbele aanhalingstekens’ enkel in het geval van een citaat. Bv. Hij zei: “ik vertrek”.
‘Single quotations marks’ are used to stress a word (cf. the use of bold).
‘Double quotation marks’ are used in the case of a quotation. E.g. He said: “I’m leaving”.

#6 DT-fout
Vermijd deze schande.

#7 Leestekens / Punctuation marks

a. Voetnoten en bibliografische referenties eindigen op een punt.
b. In je lopende tekst zet je eerst het leesteken, en dan het verwijzingsteken:
• Fout: […] gekregen1.
• Correct: […] gekregen.1
c. Titels eindigen niet op een leesteken.
Wees in het algemeen aandachtig bij het gebruik van leestekens, ze kunnen een betekenisverschil
genereren.
De leraar zei: “de leerling was te laat”.
versus
De leraar, zei de leerling, was te laat.
a. Footnotes and references always end with a full stop.
b. In your text, first put the punction mark, then the sign of reference:
• Wrong: […] obtained1.
• Correct: […] obtained.1
c. No punctuation mark at the end of a title.
Handle punctuation marks with care, they can generate differences in meaning.
Let’s eat children.
versus
Let’s eat, children.

#8 Het gebruik van stijlen / the use of styles

Gebruik stijlen (kop 1, 2, etc.) zoals dat werd gedemonstreerd tijdens de introsessies research. Het
maakt de redactie van je document eenvoudiger (automatische inhoudstafel etc.).

Use styles (heading 1, 2 etc.), as explained during the introductory sessions research. It will
facilitate writing your document (automatically generated table of content etc.).

#9 Spelling / Orthography
Maak gebruik van het zogenaamde Groene Boekje, online beschikbaar: www.woordenlijst.org.
In case of doubt, these might help:
• www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com;
• http://www.oxforddictionaries.com.

#10 Namen / Names

Schrijf een naam de eerste keer voluit: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Daarna volstaat de familienaam,
Mozart (tenzij er binnen dezelfde paragraaf verwarring zou ontstaan met bv. Leopold Mozart; in dat
geval: gebruik de afgekorte voornaam: W.A. Mozart).
A name is written in full at the first occurrence: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Afterwards the
last name is sufficient (unless there might be confusion within the same paragraph with e.g.
Leopold Mozart; in that case: use the first name (abbreviated): W.A. Mozart).

#11 Muzikaaltechnische aanduidingen / References regarding musical aspects

a. Toonaarden: zie Schrijfwijzer, § 3.6.1.
b. Italiaanse termen: zie Schrijfwijzer, § 3.6.2.
c. Titel van compositie: zie Schrijfwijzer, § 3.6.3.

#12 Getallen/ Numbers

Kleine getallen schrijf je voluit: bv. “Het werk bevat drie delen” (niet: “3 delen”). Zie Schrijfwijzer, §
3.3.2.
Small numbers are written in plain text: e.g. “The Work has three parts” (not: “3 parts”). See
Style Guide, § 3.3.2.

#13 Citaten / Citations

#14 Data / Data

Wanneer een persoon voor de eerste keer wordt vermeld, geef dan zijn geboortedatum en sterfdatum
(indien van toepassing) tussen haakjes: John Adams (°1947), Robert Schumann (1810-1856).
When you mention a person for the first time, give his date of birth and death (if it is the
case) between brackets: John Adams (°1947), Robert Schumann (1810-1856).

#15 De ik-vorm / the use of ‘I’

Gebruik de ik-vorm enkel in je voorwoord (bv. om iemand te bedanken) en in passages waar het
artistieke interpretatie betreft. In alle andere gevallen moet je streven naar objectief, zakelijk
taalgebuik. Zie Schrijfwijzer, § 3.1.
Use ‘I’ and ‘me’ only in your preface (e.g. to thank somebody) and in those parts of your text
which are dealing with artistic interpretation. In all other cases you should strive towards
objective language. See Style Guide, § 3.1.

#16 Inleiding / Introduction

In de inleiding licht je je methode toe en vertel je de lezer waaruit de paper zal bestaan. Informatie
over componist of werk hoort thuis in de eigenlijke corpustekst, niet in de inleiding.
Lees Schrijfwijzer, §.1.6 na om te weten wat er in een inleiding thuishoort.
In the introduction you describe your method and explain to the reader what the content of
the paper is. Information about composer or composition belongs to the corpus text, not to
the introduction.
Read Style Guide §.1.6. to learn what belongs to the introduction.

#17 Zinsbouw / Construction of a sentence

Elke zin dient een hoofdwerkwoord te hebben.
In every sentence a main verb is required.

#18 Verbindingsparagrafen / Connecting paragraphs

Je kan niet zo maar titels en ondertitels oplijsten. Tussen een titel en een volgende (onder)titel moet
er een verbindingstekst staan. Deze tekst moet de lezer in staat stellen je gedachtengang te volgen.
You cannot just make a list of titles and subtitles. Between a title and a following (sub)title
there has to be a connecting text. This text should allow the reader to follow your thoughts.
