Basics of RadioDJ Edit

This is an overview of RadioDJ v1.6.5.7 and later. RadioDJ is a free radio studio automation package. It is developed using .NET and uses MySQL as database backend.

RadioDJ installation Edit

Install MySQL Edit

First you'll need MySQL database to store data for songs, rotations, events etc. You can get MySQL from official MySQL downloads Currently MySql-5.5.24-win32 is the
recommended version.

MySQL works on Windows XP/7/8 and Server 2008/2012. How to Install MySQL Server 5.5 – Windows 8 PC, a video on YouTube.

Install RadioDJ Edit

Download latest version of RadioDJ and unpack zip file contents to C:\ drive or another drive.

Note: Do not install RadioDJ in Program Files or Program Files (x86) on Windows Vista or later. Latest Windows version have security features that doesn't allow users to write
files under those locations. Please make sure MySQL is installed and running.

Starting RadioDJ for the first time Edit

If you start RadioDJ before setting up database an error message will appear.

RadioDJ has no access to the MySQL database because it needs a correct password to access database. Click OK to go further.

Read the instructions in next window and if the MySQL database is installed click OK

Database Setup Edit

To access database setup application, open the RadioDJ directory, then open the Setup folder and double-click on the Database Setup.exe to launch database setup.

It will start with the message that settings are not right and display a message in lower left: MYSQL SERVER IS OFFLINE. That is to be expected.

Fill in MySQL credentials that were used while installing the MySQL server:

1. The MySQL Server address

2. The MySQL Database Name
3. The MySQL Username
4. The MySQL Password (click to Show Password, instead of *** to see what you type)

Note: RadioDJ won't work without MySQL password!

Click on VALIDATE. If everything is correct, the message in lower left should read MYSQL SERVER IS ONLINE and turn green.

There might be an error massage in the log area but it is nothing critical. Now click on INSTALL DATABASE:

https://radiodj.fandom.com/wiki/RadioDJ_1.5.6.7_guide 1/19
27/9/2019 RadioDJ 1.5.6.7 guide | RadioDJ Free Radio Automation Wiki | FANDOM powered by Wikia

Notification message will appear to ask if you are sure that you want to install the database. Note: If the database already exists, it will be overwritten. Proceed with installation by
clicking OK.

1.

If the database is installed correctly, last line of the message log should read "Import Completed". You can now close the database setup application. Now go to the folder where
you extracted RadioDJ and click on radiodj.exe or create a shortcut to the desktop for faster access.

Playlist can be saved to database or as M3U playlist file.

Playlist sidebar Edit

Auto DJ mode

MANUAL - Auto DJ is off

AUTODJ - RadioDJ selects tracks from track rotation

For track rotation setup see Track Rotations window.

Assisted and automated mode

Green - Automated mode. In automated mode RadioDJ will play song after song until the playlist is empty.
Red - Assisted mode. In assisted mode every song has to be started by hand.

Note: Purpose of Assisted/Automatic modes is not to play instantly. In automated mode, when the "NEXT START" cue point is reached, RadioDJ triggers playback of next track
from the playlist. In contrast, when in assisted mode, the cue next is ignored and the track is played until it's end and playack stops.

For cue points setup see CUE Editor.

When automated is on, it also triggers the watchdog which will start the next track if the cue next didn't trigger the mix, but with a delay.

!! IMAGE: !! INSERT is used with drag and drop. Default on RadioDJ start-up.

Click on it, drag a song from section D (Search list) to the playlist onto a song and it will be put in front of the entry in the playlist.

!! IMAGE: !! REPLACE is used with drag and drop and replaces the playlist item below cursor. Active mode is indicated by blue background colour.

!! IMAGE: !! !! IMAGE: !! Clear existing playlist entries.

!! IMAGE: !!

INPUT can be used for a microphone or any other input. Input devices can be configured in sound card options.

When first clicked sound fades down to a lower level for voice over, on a second click, sound fades back up to normal levels. Note: fade out volume can be configured in
options window under Sound Cards tab.

!! IMAGE: !! INPUT is off !! IMAGE: !! INPUT by mouse click !! IMAGE: !! INPUT is on. Click again to turn off.

Note from Marius: I do not encourage the usage of a microphone without a hardware mixer. A microphone plugged directly into the computer is OK for fun, but when we are
talking about radio, is a big NO NO.

Section B List Mode Edit

!! IMAGE: !! With a track in the screen.

!! IMAGE: !! Working in list mode is similar to slot mode !! IMAGE: !! The main difference is the extra button marked with ">" which maximises section B to fill whole screen to the
right.

!! IMAGE: !! The Sections B and C in wide screen

Section C Edit

!! IMAGE: !!

By default, section C contains two plug-ins - HISTORY and SONG DETAILS.

History details Edit

!! IMAGE: !!

History shows a list of songs that have been played (from most recent to least recent). The number of songs displayed in History can be set in the History Plugin settings. The
Play Date and time, song artist and title, and duration are shown. By double clicking on it you can change the track info with track edit.

Song Details Edit

!! IMAGE: !!

If song files have ID3 or other meta information such as artist, title, album etc., RadioDJ will extract the details from tags.

Note: RadioDJ supports meta information extraction from FLAC, M4A, OGG/Vorbis besides usual MP3 file format.

Pro tip: For easier ID3 tag editing you might want to get Mp3tag editor which can be found at http://www.mp3tag.de/en/.

There is also an application named MusicBrainz Picard which can find and update missing meta tags as long as some information is available.

Notice: RadioDJ has no connections with Mp3tag or MusicBrainz Picard and does not endorse usage of any particular tool.

!! IMAGE: !! Song details pane displays all meta information which has been read from files while importing.

Using the track manager Edit

By Dan Packard,

RadioDJ Tracks Manager Edit

Open by clicking "Tracks Manager" at lower left of main RadioDJ program window. Initially everything (all the tracks) in your RadioDJ library is shown, sorted by the first column,
“Artist” (see illustration below).

! IMAGE:

The bottom left corner of the Tracks Manager window shows the number of tracks displayed on this page (1 to 100), followed by the total number of tracks in your library (5,513 in
above example). Click the double left or right arrows at bottom right of window to scroll back or forward through the track listings.

You can sort tracks by column heading by simply clicking the top heading. For example, clicking “title” will sort all tracks by title in ascending order, 0-9 and A to Z. The blue bar
show which track was last highlighted (10cc, Art for art’s sake, in above example). The black bar represents a track that has already been played within the no-repeat parameter
(the 7up track, for example) {check on correct definition for black bar}.

To search for an artist or title in your library, simply enter the search string in blank white box at top left of window (circled).

! IMAGE:

In above example, the search string “earth” was typed in. RadioDJ quickly searches your entire Tracks database and display all artists and titles with the word “earth” in them -- “I
feel the Earth move”, “Earth, Wind & Fire”, etc.

Notice that partial matches are also shown. For example Eertha Kitt (shown farther down the tracks page). This page is also sorted by “title”. Designated by the small upward
facing triangle at “Title” column top. Upward signifies Ascending order. Click the “Title” column again and it will re-sort in descending order, with triangle pointed downwards.

Playlist Builder Edit

! IMAGE: ! IMAGE: ! IMAGE: Playlist builder is filled on the right side with tracks from the database.

You can drag and drop tracks to the New Playlist or select tracks and press the button to put them in the new playlist.

! IMAGE:

As show, track number 1 has an intro the sweeper is triggered at the intro.

Track number 2 has a sweeper and is triggered at the start of the track.

Tip. Edit

I don't like high ratio on compressors because it flattens the dynamics. Also I get much cleaner sound when disabling AGC and set the compressor a bit more aggressive. But I
guess that it depends a lot on what type of music you play. Source: Marius.

Using Virtual Audio Cable: Edit

Virtual Audio Cable is a Windows WDM multimedia driver that allows a user to transfer audio streams from one application to another. Any application is able to send an audio
stream to the output side of a "virtual cable" while a corresponding application can receive this stream from the input side. Since all transfers are made digitally, there is no loss in
sound quality. VAC is the audio equivalent of a MIDI loop-back device such as Multi-Mid or Hubi. The latest package, VAC 4, includes 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista-compatible
versions along with the previous Windows 2000/XP/2003.

VAC is written entirely in object-oriented C++ and has no external dependencies. Windows 98/ME/2000/XP versions consist of user-mode and kernel-mode components which
are compiled from a single source file set.

If more than one application is sending audio through an output virtual cable, VAC is able to mix all of the streams together or create separate corresponding virtual input cables.
Similarly, more than one application is able to receive audio from an input cable, whether it's sharing the same audio data with another target or receiving its own personal audio
stream. VAC is useful for recording an application's audio output in almost real time or transferring a sound stream to another application so it may process it. A person could use
two or more software audio generators, synthesizers or sequencers to produce audio streams and send them to a VAC output cable and record the mixed stream from the VAC
input cable using any type of recording software.

https://radiodj.fandom.com/wiki/RadioDJ_1.5.6.7_guide 16/19
27/9/2019 RadioDJ 1.5.6.7 guide | RadioDJ Free Radio Automation Wiki | FANDOM powered by Wikia
Because VAC routes audio streams in almost real time, it is able to be utilized in various manners.

A person is capable of using VAC to record an output audio stream from an application that normally does not allow files to be written into WAV. A user could also manipulate
VAC into recording conversations through Voice Over IP (VoIP) or Internet telephony applications such as Skype.

Track Types in RadioDJ Edit

RadioDJ has some predefined track types:

! IMAGE:

1. Music
2. Jingle
3. Sweeper
4. Voiceover
5. Commercial
6. Internet Stream
7. Other
8. Variable Duration File (VDF)
9. Request
10. News
11. Playlist Event
12. File By Date
13. Newest From Folder

For some of these types, RadioDJ will take some custom actions, so it’s not a good idea to play with them until we know what they represent.

Music Edit

The first type, named music must be assigned to music tracks that we expect to be played using rotations. To this types are applied a set of rules like checking when the artist
was played, when the track was played etc.

Jingle Edit

A jingle is a fully produced piece of audio which does not go over music but will sit between tracks.

Sweeper and Voiceover Edit

Sweeper: A sweeper is a piece of audio designed to segue between songs so should play over intro and outro to aid a smooth transition.

Voiceover: A voice track is a pre recorded presenter link.

Commercial Edit

Commercial can be a paid or sponsored commercial/advertisement.

Internet Stream Edit

Internet Stream represent files that are not psychically present on our hard-drive. They must be streamed from a server (web, shoutcast, icecast, etc.).

Variable Duration File Edit

Variable Duration File type must be assigned to files which will change its duration over time, for example a news file which will be overwritten often. This allows you to import the
file once and then to just overwrite the file to keep it updated. For this type, the file will be scanned every time before playing, to get its new duration.

Request Edit

Request file type is used internally for requests from website, or other sources and this type cannot be assigned manually, you need A Web Script for showing request or making
a request.

A Web-script to download, and it is easy to install.

Shows:

! IMAGE:

The web-script updates the database so requests are shown in the RadioDJ Request plugin.

! IMAGE:

Playlist Events Edit

Playlist Events are displayed as tracks in playlist, but they can trigger some simple actions that are set as manual events.

File By Date Edit

File By Date type is a dynamic track, that allows you to set a folder and the file will be chosen by the date that is added to the playlist. The default format is yyyy-MM-dd, so if the
current date is 2013-11-18, when this type of track is added to the playlist, the program will search in the specified folder for a track named “2013-11-18″. supported extension
(.mp3 ,ogg etc.).If the default format

https://radiodj.fandom.com/wiki/RadioDJ_1.5.6.7_guide 17/19
27/9/2019 RadioDJ 1.5.6.7 guide | RadioDJ Free Radio Automation Wiki | FANDOM powered by Wikia
is not good for your purpose, you can specify one in the comments field of the track, respecting the formats documentation found here.

Some examples of custom date formats:

dd-MM-yyyy
MM-dd-yyyy

Newest From Folder Edit

(can be found in track import).

Newest From Folder type also allows you to specify a folder, but from the selected folder loads the newest added file.

! IMAGE:

Track Type Selector in the red box.

Source: Marius.

example: An mp3 file for weather, news or traffic information message contained in a specific folder and file imported as variable duration files they are never the same length.

! IMAGE:

Imported tracks which still have the same name but the length is an variable duration files; The files are not imported ever, they are treated as variable duration files, the only
difference is that in the database the reference is made to the selected folder and not to a specific file. So, when you are adding that kind of track type to the playlist, the program
will compare the dates of the files from that folder and the newer one will be selected and loaded. This type of track type can be useful for radio shows, because you "import" the
folder once and then you just add the new show to that folder and you don't need to worry about schedules.

Special Links Edit

AltaCast Standalone Edit

What is AltaCast? It started as a continuation of the Oddcast/Edcast streaming software that can stream to either Icecast or SHOUTcast servers.

The current version of AltaCast Standalone, Winamp and Foobar plugins is 1.0. A 2.0 version is planned for the future that will be SHOUTcast v2 compatible.

Icecast Edit

Icecast is free server software for streaming multimedia. Icecast is a streaming media server which currently supports Ogg Vorbis and MP3 audio streams. It can be used to
create an Internet radio station or a privately running jukebox and many things in between. It is very versatile in that new formats can be added relatively easily and supports
open standards for communication and interaction.

TIPS Edit

Filling the database Edit

Ensure proper classification of your music folders, it does make it easier to import to the database In folders like: Your songs, in sub's like year or genre or on bpm etc. Sweepers
jingles RadioID jingles advertisement etc.

If you like to make intros or outros etc in the songs don't import too much at once. Import them with the box Enable Tracks disabled.

Example: Import 10 tracks (or more), go to the track manager and set the drop-down column Show All, Show Enabled, Show Disabled to Show Disabled. Double-click on a song
and in the window that opens, use the CUE Editor to make an intro or outro point etc. Do this for all the Disabled Tracks that you would like to use, then select all the songs you
have edited and click over on the left OPERATIONS area on the button ENABLE TRACKS and they will be available to play. Repeat this with new tracks. Take the time to import,
it makes it easier for you to get a good database.
