chapter IV Ref. No.: M-10.0063

in excess of the rated temperature, provided that the total operating time between these two
limits does not exceed 400 h during any 12 months operating period.

Operation between limits of 14 K and 28 K in excess of the rated temperature may be permitted,
for brief swings of 15 min or less, provided that the total operating time between these two limits
does not exceed 80 h during any 12 months operating period. In no case shall the temperature
exceed the rated temperature by more than 28 K.

Should steam be supplied to any terminal point on the turbine through two or more parallel pipes,
the steam temperature in any of these pipes should not differ from that in any other by more than
17 K, except that during fluctuations not exceeding 15 min in duration within any four-hour
period, a temperature difference not exceeding 28 K shall be admissible. The steam temperature
in the hottest pipe shall not exceed the limits given in the preceding paragraph

IV.3.3 Speed

The turbine shall, unless otherwise agreed, be capable of operating without restriction on
duration or on output between 98% and 101 % of rated speed.
Operation at speeds further removed from rated speed shall not be permitted except by
agreement.

NOTE

The limitations placed on variations of initial pressure and initial temperature respectively are
appropriate for a turbine supplied with steam from a fossil-fired boiler or other high- temperature
source.

For a turbine supplied with steam at or near saturated conditions, for example from a nuclear
reactor, the limitations to be placed on initial steam conditions shall be agreed between the
purchaser, the reactor supplier and the turbine supplier.

IV.4 Steam quality

The VGB guidelines (VGB-R 450 L) for feed and boiler water are recommended as a basis for
steam purity requirements.
While reasonable efforts should be made to comply with these reference values, to do so may
not always be economically acceptable. This is particularly true in for the commissioning of new
units, but is likewise true in the case start up or shutdown.

When weighing the effort and expense of water treatment, one must also consider the possible
outage and repair costs for a turbine damaged due to steam impurities.

To avoid misunderstandings, we would like to explicitly state that the reference steam purity
values in the following table are strictly guide values. They in no way guarantee absolute
protection against turbine fouling.
We recommend improving steam purity beyond the indicated reference values wherever
possible.

We further recommend monitoring the water-steam cycle using a recording/plotting

measurement of the electrical conductivity of initial steam and turbine condensate downstream of
a highly acidic cat ion exchanger.
If salt enters the system, immediately flush with saturated steam to remove any chlorides that
may have precipitated on the blades.

Reference and normal operating values for initial steam condensate per Guideline VGB R450L for uninterrupted,
continuous operation.

1)
We recommend dropping below the reference value and approaching the normal operating values to avoid
reductions in efficiency. (minimum requirement)
2)
The normal operating value can only be achieved during continuous operation with condensate
demineralization. In all other cases, the reference value is also the normal operating value. (optimum value)
3)
Monitoring of copper values is not necessary with copper-free water-steam cycles.
4)
If solid alkalizing agents (NaOH, Na3PO4) are not used, it is not mandatory to monitor Na values.

Conditioning of the water-steam cycle (alkaline, neutral or combination thereof) is determined on
a case-by-case basis. With an alkaline system, the pH value of the turbine condensate must not
exceed 9.3 if brass condenser tubing is used. For condensers with copper-nickel alloy tubes, the
pH value must not exceed 9.5. There is not upper pH limit for condensers with stainless steel or
titanium tubes.
With regard to the oxygen content, comply with the guidelines for feedwater conditioning.

IV.5 Oil quality

Oil with ISO viscosity class VG 46 meeting the requirements of Siemens supply specification TLV
901304 (based on DIN 51515) must be used for the lube oil system.
This is commercially available oil.

An HP hydraulic oil with ISO viscosity class VG 46 per DIN 51524, Part 2, must be used for the
control oil system.
