Teacher: Jonathan Bussey

Grade: 5th grade

Focus (Skill Theme): Throwing and Catching (Galaxy Ball)

Objective: “At the end of this lesson the students will be able to throw a ball with force through
the hula hoop and to their teammates”

Cues: 1. Side to target

2. Arm way back
3. Step with opposite foot
4. Follow through

Equipment: 2 hula hoops and 1 ball (squeezable ones)

Protocols: Go- students will begin; Stop- students will stop running and the student with the ball
will put the ball between their feet.

**After a score the other team will start where the ball lands.

Set Induction: Today we will be playing a game called Galaxy Ball. There will be one hula
hoop hanging on each of the 2 basketball goals. You will try and score the ball through the
opposing team’s hula hoop. The rules of Ultimate Frisbee apply to Galaxy Ball. I will explain in
content development. This game will help with students developing a better and more accurate
throw and also help with catching abilities.

Content Development: The rules of ultimate Frisbee apply to Galaxy ball.

Scoring: Throw the ball through the other team’s galaxy (hula hoop). Your team gets one point
for each ball thrown through the other team’s galaxy.

Change of Possession: When a pass is not completed (e.g. drop, block, interception, stalled), the
defense immediately takes possession of the ball and becomes the offense.

Non-contact: No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also
prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made, and the other team gets the ball

Movement of the Ball: The ball may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a
teammate. Students may not run with the ball. The student with the ball has ten seconds to throw
the ball.

**Students have previously been divided up into teams from last week’s lesson. We will use the
same teams

Remember this is an activity to involve everyone. Everyone should constantly be moving!

Some of you are great throwers! Now, remember to do the following: 1) Have your opposite
shoulder pointing toward the target. If you throw with your right hand, which shoulder should be
facing the target? (Left) 2) Bring your arm way back. The ball in your hand should be facing the
wall behind you. 3) Step with your opposite foot going towards your target. Release the ball
when you are pointing towards your target. 4) After you release the ball, be sure to follow
through. You should now have your entire body facing the target

Demonstrate how to properly throw the ball to a teammate or through the galaxy. Ask a
student to help demonstrate with you how to properly play. Try to avoid tossing the ball
because we are working on throwing.

 Challenges: After a few minutes I will make it where the students can only score from
behind the 3-point line. This will make the throwing of the ball important for accuracy.

Closure: Very good work today! I noticed that everyone was always moving and a majority of
you were able to successful throw the ball threw the hula hoop even behind the 3-point line.
Which hand do you prefer throwing with? Can someone show me? I need someone to help me
demonstrate the cues that we went over for throwing.
