Abstract

Excessive drinking of alcoholic drinks can lead to serious health problems

particularly to the emotional, psychological, and social aspects of teenagers.

According to Carol Galbicsek, alcoholism is the most severe form of alcohol

abuse and involves the inability to manage drinking habits. It is also commonly

referred to as alcohol use disorder and it can be organized into three categories:

mild, moderate, and severe. Each of the categories has various symptoms and

can cause harmful side effects. If this is not treated, any type of alcohol abuse

can spiral out of control.

According the WHO, almost 9% of the Philippines population who are 15

years old and older (estimated at 86 million) have an alcohol use disorder. The

main purpose of this research is divided into three objectives: 1) to be aware of

the harmful effects of alcoholism to the emotional, psychological, and social

aspects of teenagers. 2) To know the different factors that could push the

teenagers to engage in alcoholism. 3) To prevent the teenagers from engaging in

alcoholism.

For the review of related literature and studies, there were already some

group of researchers that had been studying the engagement of teenagers in

alcoholism. In a local literature, the University of the Philippines (UP) had

conducted a study and found out that Filipino youths, on the average, start

drinking at the age of 16 or 17. In a foreign literature, a 2001 survey of the World
Health Organization of those aged 15 and 74 years found that the rate of regular

drinking was 11.1% of the Philippine population.

The research design that is used in this study is a type of descriptive

design called Case Study. The research setting of the study is located in

Barangay Macasandig. The target number of respondents is 60. These

respondents must be high school students. The respondents of the survey are

being chosen through a sampling called Purposive Sampling.

According to the results of the researchers’ survey, there are 4 reasons

why teenagers engage in alcoholism. These are the factors: peer pressure,

boredom, self-medication, and rebellion. Out of the 4 factors, boredom got the

highest percentage – 26%. With this mind, boredom is the number one reason

why teenagers abuse the usage of alcoholic drinks.

According to the results of the researchers’ survey, the most common

effects that can be experienced by teenagers when addicted to alcoholic drinks

are anxiety and violence. Therefore, most of the alcoholic drinkers are

experiencing anxiety. Aside from that, it can also result to violence. That’s why

there are reported fights among the students because of alcohol issues.

According to the results of the researchers’ survey, the mostly affected

aspects of teenagers when they are addicted to alcoholic drinks are the

emotional, psychological and social aspects. Out of the three aspects, social

aspect is the mostly affected aspect by alcoholism. It got the highest percentage

– 9%.
 In conclusion, it is essential to note that alcoholism can greatly affect the

different aspects of teenagers. These aspects are the emotional, psychological,

and social aspects. Nowadays, teenagers are very prone to engage alcoholism,

that’s why teenagers today need proper guidance of their parents in order to

avoid addiction to alcoholic drinks which can lead to anxieties, mood swings, and

feelings of relaxation, peer pressure and conflicts. To understand deeply, the

engagement of teenagers to alcoholism has many reasons. The number one

reason is boredom; followed by self-medication, rebellion and peer pressure.

For the recommendation, the first one is for the teenagers who engage in

alcoholism. They must have to attend several symposiums or seminars for them

realize the effects of alcohol. The second is for the parents. They must have to

monitor the behaviours of their sons and daughters. Aside from that, they must

teach them to be more productive when it comes to school activities, household

tasks, and community service. The last one is for the future teenagers on

engaging alcoholism.
