BAZI: DOING THE RIGHT THING, AT THE RIGHT

TIME

Bazi : Doing The Right Thing, At the

Right Time
Bazi & Qi
The Chinese spent more than 3,000 years pondering upon life, the universe and the role humankind
played in this elaborate theater.

Their efforts culminated in the understanding and discovery that there is indeed an omnipresent force
called `Qi’ that interacts with and influences the life of every person on this planet. Furthermore, they
also realized that at our time of birth, Qi manifests itself in different ways, with far-reaching outcomes
that permeate virtually every aspect of our lives.

Now, Qi forms the crux around which Chinese Metaphysics revolves. But what exactly is Qi, or perhaps
more importantly, where does it come from?

Qi is generated by the movement of our planet Earth as it orbits around the sun (known in Chinese
Metaphysics as the `Yellow Belt’), as well as the movement and orbit of the celestial bodies such as the
moon, the planets and stars within and beyond the Milky Way, and any other objects such as meteors,
comets and asteroids that happen to bisect the Earth’s orbit, amongst other things, of course!

Hence, all the Chinese actually did was to study the interaction between the forces exerted in the
constellations and how these forces influenced both manmade and natural phenomena on Earth, and
document them thoroughly for future reference and research.

Lesson 1 : BZP 1101
BAZI: DOING THE RIGHT THING, AT THE RIGHT

Why Four Pillars (Ͳ‫ޘ‬/Si Zhu)?

BaZi literally translates into English as `Eight Characters’, although practitioners and students know this
field of knowledge better as `Four Pillars of Destiny’.

Why Four Pillars? Because by plotting the details of our year, month, day and time of birth, a BaZi Chart
will assume the form of 4 integrated pillars, into which we can pore and scrutinize to understand what
Destiny holds in store for us!

And why Eight Characters? Each of the Four Pillars consists of 2 Characters. Therefore, 4 Pillars X 2
Characters per Pillar = 8 Characters!

`Destiny DNA’
In order to understand WHAT BaZi really is, one needs to refer to the old manuscripts and classical texts.
The Chinese have five categories of study that form the crux of Chinese Metaphysics (known as the Five
Arts – ˤप!Wu Shu):

• Mountain (ˌ!Shan);
• Medical ( ᖂ!Yi);
• Divination ( ʫ Bu);
• Destiny ( ּ Ming); and
• Physiognomy ( ߺ!Xiang).

Every human being is born with a unique DNA code. Our DNA contains information that pertains to
our very existence; our characteristics, traits, capabilities etc. It determines our height, our IQ levels, our
capacity to excel in certain fields and generally, what makes us tick. Of course, common sense would
dictate that someone who lacks the height would find it extremely difficult – if not downright impossible
– to be a professional basketball player. This is because it has all been mapped-out for us, right from birth.
Not everyone may have Tom Cruise or Nicole Kidman’s looks and acting talents, but surely we too have
our own specialties, don’t we?

Yes, admittedly, looks, IQ and even EQ levels are pre-set from birth. Nevertheless, with the advent
of plastic surgery and `self-help’ programs, we know that few things cannot be altered – or improved
on – today. And while not everyone can play football like Ronaldo or David Beckham, surely we are
empowered to do something to improve our lot in life, even if that doesn’t mean that we all end up filthy
rich or supremely popular at the end of the day!

Lesson 1 : BZP 1101
BAZI: DOING THE RIGHT THING, AT THE RIGHT
TIME

Enter Destiny
Just like DNA, our Destiny has been laid out for us right from the moment we entered this world. The
more interesting, and important, question is: What if you could actually chart your Destiny Code (and by
that, we mean properly mapped-out on a piece of paper), and decipher and decode it?

You may still be skeptical about the prospect of `a’ Destiny that can be `charted’ and then `decoded’. But
are you willing enough to open your mind and heart, and see if a proper study of your Destiny would
indeed enable you to find your bearings in life?

Seizing Destiny by the Fists!

There are 2 systems of Chinese Astrology widely practiced today, falling under the category of Destiny
Studies; namely BaZi and Purple Star ( ൙์!Zi Wei) Astrology. Both are equally versatile and capable
of allowing us to derive accurate conclusions, although BaZi is relatively easier to study and master,
compared to its Purple Star counterpart.

Put simply, BaZi recognizes that certain Qi represented by the Five Elements (i.e. Wood, Fire, Earth,
Metal & Water) are present during the year, month, day and even hour of your birth. Now, these Qi
actively interact with and influence whatever life has in store for you - your Career, Wealth, Relationship
and Health prospects, and even your personality and character!

Lesson 1 : BZP 1101
BAZI: DOING THE RIGHT THING, AT THE RIGHT
TIME

By being able to identify and plot these Qi in black-and-white accordingly, we would be able to derive
a physical layout of our life’s virtual map. Now, all we need to do is understand the interaction between
these Qi, before we can really decipher their impact on our lives.

In other words, BaZi is a study of your Destiny – a tool that allows you to analyze and learn what
Destiny has in store for you.

Why BaZi?
Your BaZi is, in effect, a Destiny Map of the Opportunities and Challenges that await you in life. It is
set at the time of your birth, as a result of the cosmic energies ( ॉ!Qi) that are prevalent at the particular
time, day, month and year.

BaZi studies the factors of time, space, people, behavior and events that influence a person’s life from the
day he or she was born. By decoding your BaZi, you will also gain greater insights into your character,
personality, strengths and weaknesses.

Lesson 1 : BZP 1101
BAZI: DOING THE RIGHT THING, AT THE RIGHT
TIME

As such, BaZi is effectively an ancient Chinese metaphysical science that engages in the study of Destiny
Analysis. It basically analyzes a person’s life path (Destiny), based on his or her Destiny (BaZi) Chart.
Nevertheless, at an advanced level, BaZi practitioners are actually able to read into – and analyze – the
life paths and destiny of people closely related or affiliated to the person whose BaZi Chart is being
analyzed.

Now, the Four Pillars that make up a BaZi Chart are the Year, Month, Day and Hour Pillars. Each Pillar
consists of 2 characters: The upper character is called the Heavenly Stem, and the lower character is
known as the Earthly Branch.

Lesson 1 : BZP 1101
BAZI: DOING THE RIGHT THING, AT THE RIGHT
TIME

The science of BaZi revolves around the 5 Elements Theory. A BaZi Chart
T
is basically plotted by assigning the time-related details of our birth in the
form of the 5 Elements. Likewise, our destiny and the people, events and
situations in our lives are analyzed by first interpreting the arrangement and
formation of these Elements in our BaZi Charts. Each Element has a Yin and
Yang variation, which changes according to time.

By plotting,
B l tti analyzing
l i and d decoding our BaZi Charts, we are able to know what awaits us in life. This
allows us to capitalize on our Strengths and the Opportunities that arise, as well as improve on our
Weaknesses and strategize on how Challenges can be overcome.

In a nutshell, we study BaZi to:

• Make informed decisions;

• Maximize our potential in life;
• Strengthen our relationships with others;
• Understand other people better;
• Choose the right career path; and
• Apply classical Feng Shui correctly (BaZi is also known as the diagnosis to Feng Shui, which
prescribes any remedies)

Hence, we study BaZi so that we can make informed decisions in life!

The Cosmic Trinity

At this point, it is apt for you to understand the role and importance of the Cosmic Trinity in the study of
BaZi, and Chinese Metaphysics in general. Now, three Forces – known as the Cosmic Trinity – govern
our lives and destiny:

• Heaven Luck;
• Earth Luck; and
• Human Luck.

that potentially affect our lives. Obviously, we are
th
in control of our own actions and decisions, and
therefore, Human Luck.

Meanwhile, Earth Luck pertains to the influence of

the living environment on our lives and destiny; i.e.
where we live and spend most of our time.

Each of these Three Forces bears an equal impact

E
(33%, in arithmetical terms!) in influencing our lives. But you should be able to deduce by now that we
can analyze Heaven Luck through BaZi, which will in turn equip us to maximize our Earth Luck through
Feng Shui!

Yin & Yang

Yang

Yin

The study of Chinese Metaphysics and BaZi will inevitably and invariably revolve around the concept of
Yin and Yang.

Yin and Yang represent flux or change, and are constantly in motion. This interaction beautifully depicts
the Universe, and ALL things that happen in it. In other words, the phenomena, events, outcomes and
changes in times – these are subject to and hence obey the theory of Yin and Yang.

Yin and Yang are also used to depict opposites, and how they may be different, yet complement each other
to become ONE. Simple examples that you will be able to identify with include:

Yang Yin
• Positive • Negative
• Active/Proactive • Reactive
• Male • Female
• Hard • Soft
• Bright • Dark
• Day • Night
• Fast • Slow
• Aggressive • Passive/Gentle
• Strong • Weak

Are you now able to see how these easily relate to the theories and
tenets of Chinese Metaphysical subjects such as BaZi, Classical
Feng Shui, and the Yi Jing etc.?

Remember; BaZi is a study of seeking Equilibrium and Harmony

in analyzing Destiny. Too much of a good thing is not necessarily
good, and of course, we don’t want too much of a bad thing either!
It’s all about Balance.

Just as Yin and Yang are in a constant state of dynamic equilibrium,

so do we want to lead balanced, wholesome lives! Knowing and understanding Yin and Yang will serve
you well as you go about analyzing BaZi Charts.

The Five Elements ( ˤї!Wu Xing)

The Five Elements in the study of BaZi and Chinese Metaphysics are Water, Metal, Fire, Wood and
Earth.

Now, do NOT take these elements at their literal or pure appearances. The Five Elements are used to
symbolically represent Qi, and in BaZi, they are used to represent certain key attributes in a person’s BaZi
Chart. Put simply, the Five Elements are symbolic representations of the characteristics of a Chart that
will allow us to tell the type of person and his or her personality, likes and dislikes, and potential in life.

For instance, Water represents Wisdom, Wood represents Benevolence, Fire represents Elegance and
Passion, Earth represents Trustworthiness and Metal represents Justice and Righteousness. Just by
looking at these obvious elements, we are immediately able to know the type of person whose BaZi Chart
we are analyzing!

Lesson 1 : BZP 1101
BAZI: DOING THE RIGHT THING, AT THE RIGHT
TIME

Of course, a certain amount of IMAGINATION or PICTORIAL DEPICTION is required, to be able to

VISUALIZE the elements as they appear in the BaZi Chart. And as these elements interact with each
other naturally, it is important for us to understand the 3 basic cycles of the interaction between the Five
Elements. These are the Productive Cycle, the Controlling Cycle and the Weakening Cycle.

But before you proceed any further, always remember that the 3 Cycles are always in motion, and as such,
determine the outcome of the interaction between the Elements in a BaZi Chart.

The Productive Cycle

The Productive Cycle refers to the phase where the Elements support and strengthen each other. This
cycle is in harmony and in constant motion. Think of it logically:

Water nourishes plants, and therefore, Water produces Wood. We need Wood to start a Fire, so Wood
produces Fire. Now, when Fire reduces Wood to ashes, these ashes return to the Earth – hence Fire
produces Earth! And where do we find Metal? From the Earth, of course! So, Earth produces Metal.
And then, we liquefy Metal to produce Water,

So you can see how the Qi flows in this Cycle, can’t you?

The Controlling Cycle

Remember what we talked about in relation to the concept of Yin and Yang earlier? We want Balance,
and this is where Control comes in. Control is not necessarily a bad or negative thing; it’s merely a check-
and-balance measure to ensure the Elements are in harmony with each other. Of course, there is such a
thing as Good Control (in keeping things balanced), and Bad Control (where too much pressure causes
things to crumble or collapse)!

Now think carefully. Don’t we need Water to control or extinguish Fire? So, Water controls Fire. Fire
in turn is required to melt and mold Metal – Fire makes Metal more malleable. So, Fire controls Metal!
Now, we need an axe or a blade to cut Wood into smaller pieces (to convert it into something useful like
furniture, for example). Blades or axes are made of Metal, so Metal controls Wood.

How do you prevent a landslide or soil erosion? You need trees/plants to do the trick, and since trees
are made of Wood and soil of Earth, we use Wood to control Earth. Now, no matter how large a body of
water such as a lake or even ocean, it is still bordered by land. So, do you agree that Earth controls Water
in turn?

Do you now see how the Controlling Cycle comes full circle, in harmony?

The Weakening Cycle

Again, remember the concept of Yin and Yang. Too much of a strong thing is never too good, and we
can’t achieve anything when our resources are too weak, either. That’s exactly why we need to also know
how an Element can be used to weaken another Element – it’s all about bringing Balance to our Destiny
and lives!

In the Weakening Cycle, any Element that produces another Element is weakened by the Element is
produces. Think logically: If you used your energy to make a chair, you have produced a chair, but your
energy is depleted, isn’t it?

So in the same sense, Earth produces Metal (refer to the Productive Cycle learnt just now) and is therefore
weakened by Metal. Water corrodes Metal, so Water weakens Metal.

Now, plants need Water to survive, so would you agree that Wood weakens Water? In turn, Fire burns
Wood and reduces it to ashes, so Fire weakens Wood. Once Fire has completely reduced Wood to ashes,
it will be naturally extinguished by Earth. Hence, Earth weakens Fire.

The 10 Heavenly Stems & 12 Earthly Branches

Continue to think in PICTURES. VISUALIZE how the Five Elements interact; you need to see for and
by yourself how things materialize in a BaZi Chart, if you’re to analyze it effectively!

The 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches are a must-know for any BaZi student, and you are
advised to commit them to memory. This is because each of the characters represented by the Heavenly
Stems and Earthly Branches allow us to derive in-depth insights into a person’s character, potential and
Destiny, just by their mere appearance on a BaZi Chart.

When we also take into account the Productive, Controlling and Weakening Cycles, and apply them
in enhancing, weakening or changing the characters of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, we
are able to actually read a person’s BaZi Chart like a picture or book, and see for ourselves the events,
outcomes, opportunities, threats and challenges that await this person in life!

The 24 Seasons (໽ॉ Jie Qi) of the Chinese Solar Calendar

This is of paramount importance, too. In BaZi (and most fields of Chinese
hinese
Metaphysics, including Classical Feng Shui), a BaZi Chart is derived ved
using the Chinese Solar Calendar. And the Chinese Solar Calendar is
quite distinct from the Chinese Lunar Calendar, which is usually used
to determine Chinese festivities.

Now, a standard Western (Gregorian) year consists of 12 months.

And if you happen to live in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere (as
opposed to the Equator!), you will find that these 12 months can be
further identified according to the 4 seasons of spring, summer, autumnn
and winter – with each season spanning a period of approximatelyy 3
months, every year.

But the Chinese, being a very meticulous people, must be credited for their invention of the 24 Seasons
Calendar, or the Chinese Solar Calendar. This Calendar divides every standard year into 24 phases
(hence the word `seasons’). Its strength and versatility lie in its function as an immensely accurate tool
in allowing us to determine the various phases and climate changes of the year (specifically, for countries
in the Northern Hemisphere, given China’s geographical location).

Lesson 1 : BZP 1101
BAZI: DOING THE RIGHT THING, AT THE RIGHT
TIME

This is because the Chinese Solar Calendar is the product of the painstaking documentation of centuries
(if not millennia) of observation; of the movement of celestial bodies and the occurrence of earthly
phenomena. Spurred by their initial curiosity to know more about their world and the universe, the
ancient Chinese were not content to merely star-gaze and leave it at that. Instead, they took it a step
further, and checked for any further co-relation between the Earth’s movement around the sun, the moon’s
orbit around the Earth, as well as astronomical phenomena, and earth-bound ones that affected their lives.
Centuries of research and documentation culminated in the derivation of the 24 Seasons, where (if you
observe carefully) even each of the 4 seasons of the year is further broken-down into sub-seasons, to
facilitate analyzes on Qi timeliness, strengths and phases.

And certainly, doesn’t this make sense…for after all, wouldn’t the strength of an Element’s Qi in, say,
early autumn, be different from its strength (i.e. timeliness) towards late autumn/early winter? Indeed,
such an understanding has long served Chinese Metaphysics practitioners well in identifying Qi phases,
especially in the fields of BaZi, Ze Ri (Date Selection) and Classical Feng Shui.

Necessity is oft quoted as the mother of invention. And should you need any further convincing as to the
flair (and talents) of the Chinese for practicality and details, it would be apt to recall that we’re talking
about the world’s oldest continuing civilization that invented the compass, paper, gunpowder and initiated
the use of flags in battle forr identification

Lesson 1 : BZP 1101
BAZI: DOING THE RIGHT THING, AT THE RIGHT
TIME

Food for Thought

So be sure to acquaint yourself with the concepts of Qi, Yin and Yang, the Five Elements, the Chinese
Solar Calendar, the 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches for now. This knowledge will serve you
well if you wish to progress smoothly and quickly in your BaZi studies.

Now, lest we forget how BaZi empowers us, you will be interested – and hopefully, also pleased – to
know that with knowledge of BaZi, we are able to undertake at least 4 types of analyses:

• Destiny Analysis

This allows us to decode and understand the life path or Destiny of a person. A Destiny Analysis
is perhaps one of the most thorough types of BaZi analyses possible, since we require a basic,
static chart to analyze this person’s Wealth, Relationships, Health and Career prospects, as well as a
dynamic chart that consists of the 10-Year Luck Cycles – which provides us an in-depth insight into
the annual and monthly cycles of this person’s luck, and when he or she will find the going smooth
or rough!

• Personality Analysis

Do you really know who you are? More precisely, do you know your capabilities and potential?
BaZi allows us to analyze our own personality (and those of others) in surprisingly great detail. In
other words, the character, nature, behavior and potential of a person can be meticulously decoded
from his or her BaZi Chart. Factors such as a person’s IQ (Intelligence Quotient) and EQ (Emotional
Quotients) can also be derived from a BaZi Chart.

Lesson 1 : BZP 1101
BAZI: DOING THE RIGHT THING, AT THE RIGHT
TIME

• Event Analysis

The time and place where an event in a person’s life is supposed to occur (as dictated by Heaven
Luck) can be analyzed through BaZi. This of course allows him or her to take advantage of any
positive things that are headed his or her way, or sidestep or negate the detrimental effects of any
hiccups in life. For instance, suppose you are a single and eligible bachelor and wish to know when
you will meet the `love of your life’. A BaZi analysis will be able to shed light into your query and
satisfy your curiosity!

• General Analysis

The economic and political cycles of a country or city – on a much larger but no-less detailed scale
– can be analyzed through BaZi. Even threats such as terrorist attacks or epidemic diseases can be
foretold by analyzing an annual BaZi Chart.

Put simple, BaZi is all about doing the Right Thing, at the Right Time, and in the Right Place. And when
we are capable of doing so, we are in effect empowering ourselves to make the most of what life has to
offer us!
