Textbook

Westphal, Frederick W. Beginning Woodwind Class Method. 4th83. Dubuque, Iowa:

W.C.Brown Pub.Co. , 1983.

Beginning Woodwind Class Method is a good resource for a future music educator. This
book is aimed directly towards the student with previous knowledge concerning music
and takes no time explaining basics i.e. note reading, rhythm etc. The book includes
instructional materials for all of woodwind instruments--flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon,
alto saxophone, and tenor saxophone. The book begins by giving an introduction to each
of the instruments. It moves on gradually on to technique and also discusses repertoire,
which is a necessity for a music educator. Daily studies and fingering charts for each of
the instruments are all included.

Website

Clark, Jesse. "Flute Info." FluteInfo.com. 09 February 2008. 3 Mar 2008

I liked this source because it was all-inclusive for a flute player. It had everything from
fingering charts to sight reading material to free sheet music, and even tips on any
physical pain a beginner may run into. This website gave a history of the flute and it
even had master class notes on the page.

Recordings

Flute- Bach Flute Sonatas; George Malcolm, Michaels Evans, and William Bennet.
I chose this recording for the flute repertoire. After research I found that these
Bach Flute Sonatas are a big part of flute repertoire. Although the student may
not be able to even come close to playing anything, it always helps to hear what
your instrument is capable of because it encourages the student to strive to be
better.

Oboe-The Oboe in Mozart Chamber Music; Ambache Chamber Ensemble and Jeremy
Polmear
I struggled to find specific pieces for good oboe repertoire that a student would be
able to listen so I decided to use this recording. I think it is good for the student
because the cd allows him/her to hear what his instrument sounds like with other
instruments. This will give the student a sound to strive for.

Clarinet-The Essential Berstein; Deborah Sasson, Leonard Bernstein, Los Angeles

Philharmonic
Since the clarinet has become widely used in jazz and contemporary music also, I
wanted to find a recording of a modern composer. I chose Leonard Bernstein’s
Sonata for Clarinet and Piano because it will give the student a taste of
contemporary music while also showing them the possibilities of their instrument.

Saxophone-J.S. Bach for Saxophone; Michael Ibrahim

Absolutely beautiful pieces which would be great listening for the student. Not
only would this recording give a great appreciation for the instrument to the
student, but also the composer, and that time period’s music.

Bassoon-Hummel: Bassoon Concerto-Clarinet Quartet; Gonella/Orchestra Internazionale

D’italia and Johann Nepomuk
The bassoon repertoire was difficult to find. I finally found this concerto, and
once again, I think if one has a student playing this instrument, this recording
would be very good for the student to hear what the bassoon sounds like when
played with other instruments.

Journal

Weerts, Dick. "THE NACWPI JOURNAL." 13 may 2008 <http://www.nacwpi.org/NAC

%20Journal.htm>.

This journal is great for future music educators. College level professors run the journal
so you are reading information written by professionals. Also, articles are accepted by
the journal. So if you would like to put your input in on one of the subjects you can send
in a journal too.

Resource Person-Carolyn Mullay

Carolyn is a freshman clarinet player. I chose her because she has a passion for
the instrument and that is someone you would want in a network.
