Police officers are here to protect the community and local area from crimes and illegal

activities. Police officers observe crimes through high-visibility policing. Officers when on duty are

usually assigned to patrol an area and look for dangerous and suspicious activity. They are responsible

for responding to calls and or emergencies. Officers half to follow rules and guidelines just like we half

to, but it’s the job of the police to do so. When an officer is involved in a crime, it is there job to report

that crime for further investigation. (Workeble, n.d.). The education needed for becoming a police

officer is just a high school diploma, but some places now require an associates degree and or bachelors.

You half to be at least 21 years old and pass exams to become a police officer. You should also try to be

in good shape because that will help a lot in training camp. The training takes anywhere from 12-14

weeks, this is where they learn all the material. (College quest, n.d.)

I believe the normal level of education is required because everyone should go to college and

study criminal justice and common core classes to become more advanced in the topic. Most police

officers don’t go to college before going into the law. I think the smart decision is that you should

personally go to college and study law. This is because when looking for a job as an officer, you will be at

the top of the list and have a higher chance at getting the job over others. This is because they know you

are more skilled then people with just high school diplomas, so obviously they would like the better. I

am currently taking Intro to criminal justice as a freshman in college. I wanted to start learning about it

early because then I will have a jump on some people later in the years I am here at Nichols. This class is

specifically designed for getting a job in the law enforcement and it will teach me everything I would

possibly need to know. And the people that don’t go to college for law, I will definitely know more than

them.

Depending on position and your time in law enforcement, the more/ less money you will be

making. Policemen also make different amounts of money depending on the work setting, example

would be a city or just suburbs. The more experienced an officer is, the more he/ she will be paid. The

median salary of an officer is roughly $63,000 a year. But the more advanced officers make over

$100,000 a year. Big difference. (Criminal justice degree schools, n.d.). Officers in Chicago make way

more than most places. This is because Chicago is a high populated place for crimes being committed.

The lowest an officer can make here is $79,000 compared too around $60,000 in regular cities/ towns.

The higher paid officers in Chicago make almost around $90,000 for just being a little more advanced

(Moore, 2012). I will manage the money I make by only spending it on things I need in life and not all of

that other stuff just to waist money on. I would be supporting a family, paying for my house and a car,

and with any extra money either save it or spend it on actual things in need.
