There is. adequate subcutaneous, visceral, perirenal and pericardiac fat. The large colon and cecum are in proper anatomic position at time of necropsy (photo cc). The liver, k dneys and spleen are grossly normal for euthanasia artifacts (photo b}. The gastric mucosa is grossly within normal limits. The intestinal contents are normal. The lungs are mottled pale pink, dark pink and red, with glistening pleural surfaces. Along the dorsal edge of the right lung there is a black (hemorrhage) rounded -elevated) focus (6.5cm x Sem x 3m raised) which on cut section is black and contains dark red flu d (contusion) (photo bb). In the pleural surface of the dorsal left lung there is a 7.Sem x 5.Sem black focus within which the pleural surface is lacerated in at least 5 foci (photo bbb). There is dark red/black clotted blood around the ventral portions of the 7-12 thoracic vertebrae (photo c). The lungs and heart are removed to reveal severeacute intramuscular hemorthage in the right and left intercostal muscles from right rib 7 to right rib 12 near the vertebrae (photo d, dd), with less extensive intramuscular hemorthage in the left intercostal ‘muscles from rib 10 to 12 (photo d); there is also focally extersive severe acute periadventitial hemorrhage around the thoracic aorta subjacent to T9-16 (photo d). There is a very distinct kink in the aorta and vertebral column at T10-11 (photo d, dd). When the aorta is removed, it is obvious that the right 7® rib and the right 10% rib (photo m) are fractured at th2 base and dcm lateral to the base, the 10 and 11 thoracic vertebrae are fractured into multiple small fragments (photo n, nn), the spinal cord is completely transected at T10-11 (photo e), and the left 9 and 10" ribs are fractured approximately 5 cm from the base, resulting in very sharp projecting fragment that lacerated the left dorsal lung (photo I). Both the left (photo f) and right (photo gg) hind distal cannon bones have parasagittal groove fissures (right more severe than left). The left hind proximal phalanx has marked periarticular modelling (lipping) along the proximodorsal margin (photo ff); the right 1nd proximal phalanx is within normal limits (photo g}. The synovial lining of right (photo k) and left (photo h) carpal joints is dark red and thickened; carpal bones are grossly within normal limits. There are foci of subchondral bone lysis (blue spots) in the articular surfaces of both left front cannon bone (photo i) and right front cannon bone (photo j); left more severe than right. Cause of Death: Euthanasia; catastrophic vertebral fractures with transection of spinal cord, Gross Findings: Body as a Whole: in good condition Lungs: contusion on right, lacerations on left, related to rib fractures and vertebral fractures Vertebrae: severe acute comminuted fractures of T10, T11 Spinal Cord: complete transection at T10-T11 related to fractures Ribs; right ribs 7, 10 fractured, left rib 9, 10 fractured and lacerated the left lung Fetlock Joints: mild to moderate chror degenerative joint disease Carpal Joints: moderate chronic synocitis Pathologists Comments: Euthanasia was the most humane treatment for this filly who sustained devastating fractures to two ‘thoracic vertebrae and four ribs, with resultant complete severing of the spinal cord, Commission Veterinarian’s Comments Dr. Daniel: Upon arrival, Kimberly B (#1) was lying in right lataral recumbency on top off the front legs of Tuffy’s Way (1#8), who was in left lateral recumbency. Kimterly B had no obvious fractures of her distal skeleton, The tack was loosened and we attempted to get her up. Using her front end, shepivoted off Tuffy’s Way and then collapsed in left lateral recumbency. Her rear limbs did not move at all during this. | noticed that her back legs were covered in urine. At this point, | assumed that her back was broken, One more attempt was made to get her up to no avail. All connections agreed that euthanasia was the only humane option. Blood was drawn far testing, Kimberly B was then euthanit (110mls euthasol/ 10mls succinylcholine) Dr. Walsh: When | arrived, the filly was laying in left lateral recumbency next to the legs of Tuffy’s Way. The filly had poor anal reflex/tone and was not attempting to move either hind limb. She had a deep pain withdrawal reflex when Dr. Sacksen pricked her hind pastern area with a needle. One more attempt was made to assist her to rise; however, she was unable to move her hind limbs. She was euthanized on the track Dr. Sacksen: | examined the horse in the morning prior to the race and found no significant lesions, The horse jogged sound. The horse was down in left lateral recumbency on top of Tuffy’s Way. Hind limbs were rigid, urine was noted to be dribbling, no perianal reflex, and only deep pain was present.
