Recognizing Junk - Do not title

Recurring Junk vs. Junk -

Recurring junk was created by the Cruncher as an item that repeats. It began its life as an untitled Spot until some unsympathetic Discovery person threw it away as Junk.
(Have you shed a tear? Will you now feel very guilty for junking anything?) Obviously, if the item is junk, junk it. We'll have a funeral later.

Junk - is an item that was split off as junk from a recurring item. You'll notice that these occur with far less frequency. If it is junk, junk it.

Foreign Language Spots - Only title English and Spanish spots Junk all other language ads.
Spanish spots should be handled by the DR office.

Commercial matter from paid spots aired within news programs, talk shows, jock talk, etc. are to be titled. At times the announcers will carry on a conversation about a
spot that has aired. If they replay a portion or all of the paid spot within their show this must be titled. If the replayed spot were to be junked, the cross checker would also send the
paid spots to recurring junk.

Note: Use the minimum suspect guidelines.

Radio Station owned events, airing on their own station, are junk.

*Note - Individual booths within a job fair

fa are not considered co-owners of the event, they are only the participants. So do not junk a spot for a job fa

Radio Station Promos vs. Paid Advertising -

When the spot talks about the station giving away tickets the spot is junk. (Exception would be remote broadcasts, see below) However, if the station uses their call letters, their
frequency or their slogan within the spot giving information as to where tickets may be purchased, title as instructed in the concert section of the Style Guide. Stations like for
their listeners to believe that they are the concert promoters.

For Radio Discovery:

Do not title radio station-specific app spots. Station-specific means the app has no partnership with other websites or companies and/or is branded specific to that one
station.
Title TV station-specific app spots as the original business.
Title non station-specific apps as the original business. Non station-specific means it's a *network* or company application that is not only related to one station in particular.

For TV Discovery:
Title radio station apps as the original business.
Title TV station-specific apps as the original business.
Title non station-specific apps as the original business.

** All music including live performances on Radio and Mediabase/Video TV stations appearing in the Radio Media sets should be classified as Untitled Programming for the Mediabase
staff to title. Mediabase / Video TV will follow the call letters; i.e., MTV - Mediabase.

The music suspects presented in the TV system should be sent to recurring junk as the music is not titled.

Remote Broadcasts -
Many stations sell live broadcasts from a clients place of business. This is known in radio circles as a live remote broadcast. The station will sell this normally in one of two forms;
an exclusive remote (which is very rare) and is where the clients receives all the available commercial time within the broadcast. Title these as the product advertised.
Hispanic Example:

The other for is a non-exclusive remote where the client receives a specific number commercial drop-ins live from the place of business intermixed with the station's regular
advertising clients. The latter is sometimes difficult to recognize because of it's placement with other commercial matter. Most stations will promote the live appearance remote
for several days prior to the event. Those promos are counted as value added items and are part of the package paid for by the client. Title all remote spots as these are
paid by the advertiser to have the radio announcer broadcast live from their business. Note: There are times when other sponsors are mentioned. These
"sponsors" provide the giveaways during the remote. Title as the business where the remote is being held.

Cafecito con los Marlins - is a one-hour Spanish radio show originating from local Latin cafeterias, gas stations, local medical centers, etc. The show airs on WQBA 1140 AM
from 10-11AM Agustin Acosta and Eduardo Gonzalez Rubio hosts the show, which features interview, analysis and prizes. Marlin players/coaches will also be special guests on the
show. These all should be treated as a REMOTE and titled as the name of the advertiser that is paying to have the show broadcast from their business. This is the same as if the
station played music at an advertiser's location. Other shows that are similar to this are Desayuno Con Los Marlins and Jangueando en el Wiken - title as the remote location.

Station-Organized Events -

Events that are solely organized and produced by a radio station are not titled. A good example is below of WIAC-FM (also know as Toca de Tó) promoting their station beach

If the event is produced by a radio station but advertised on other stations that are not owned by the same radio station, then it would be titled. i.e. Día Nacional De La Salsa airs
on non-SBS stations, so it is a paid advertisement.

The Chicago stations announce job opportunities as a public service. These can be recognized because the list usually consists of several different jobs, not just one. Also, the
beginning and end of the suspect have a particular phrase. For example, "Estas son (at the beginning) and "fueron" (at the end). Chambitas de Ley - La Ley is the nickname of
"WLEY". WOJO will say something like, "Si buscas trabajo, tenemos las siguientes oportunidades". These segments are junk.

Exception - Websites owned by radio and television parent companies airing on stations not owned by the same company should be titled.

Usually in the holiday season there will be a lot of anti-drinking and driving announcements. The majority of these are PSAs bought to you by the radio stations and non-profits
organizations like MADD. These should be titled as the organization. If it is confirmed that there is no organization behind it, and it's only the radio station, junk it.

We title spots brought to you by government agencies. Please refer to the Government section of the Style Guide for titling rules.

Alcohol companies, especially Budweiser, will also have spots about drinking responsibly. These are paid advertisement and should be titled.

Happy Holidays or similar message spots from the radio or TV stations alone are junk. If it's done by an organization/business, etc., title as the organization/business, etc. If it's
done by the radio or TV station and an organization, title as the organization/business, etc.

Vacation Companies -

If you hear a "live" spot offering a vacation to a large number of callers, most likely it is a paid advertisement and not a station contest. When a radio station has a contest, they
generally have one big winner. If you hear a DJ or someone talking to the DJ offering a trip to the first 20, 50, 100 listeners, an advertiser, not the station, is making the offer.
The most common advertiser of this type would be companies that sell timeshares. The person would have to agree to go to one of their meetings about purchasing a timeshare
condo in order to get their weekend in Las Vegas, or at a Disney property, etc. This is a paid "promo" for the company and NOT the station.

One hint that the station is not giving away the trip is that the phone number given in the spot is not the number of the station. Station contests always give the station's phone
number. Another clue is the person is asked to answer a question that is REALLY EASY of general knowledge. This question would have nothing to do with listening to the radio
station at a certain time, being the ## caller, or identifying a song, etc.
