The Real Banquet
he banquet organized by
the king—the wedding
of his son—is special. But
those invited did not come.
This parable is often applied
to the Jews who refused the
banquet of Jesus, but actually
it is something that happens to
all of humanity. Many reject
God's role in their lives, and
some even resort to a violent
reaction to his presence,
saying that God dehumanizes
and enslaves. The Marxist
ideology and other atheistic
principles follow this line
of thought, and how many
have they killed among God’s
servants in history! The Islamic
fundamentalist groups in the
name of Allah continue with
their rampage in many parts
of the world, bombing and
shooting, denying the joy of
human fraternity and sharing.
To these extremists, the earth is
not seen asa place of banquet,
but of carnage and slaughter.
The parable portrays God
organizing the world to the
pattern of a celebration or feast,
but the human response denies
that. That’s why, faced with
the evil of men and women,
we have to affirm constantly
that God wants us to join him
in the feast—in a celebration
where everyone has the best
of everything, contented and
joyful of being alive! When
God indeed is present, loved
and adored, peace and joy
reign. When he is absent,
THE GOSPA. aw CARE FOR CREATION
sadness and sorrow take over.
Humanity enters a cycle of
selfishness that breeds violence
and exclusion.
The joy of the banquet does
not depend upon the amount of
material things. We often have
this illusion that the more we
have, the happier we become
In our younger years, we live
in a dream that when we have
achieved economic prosperity
and could afford luxuries, we
would be happier. But then we
easily recognize that those who
have inner peace and joy are
more fortunate than we, and
that all these years, we have
entertained a mere illusion.
Success is always a matter of
the heart,
In our era of economic
prosperity, there is a renewed
interest in the lifestyle of the
indigenous peoples who share
the little they have. The Aetas
of Cagayan (presented in a
TV documentary by journalist
Kara David) who fished the
eels of the Cagayan river for
their sustenance used to sell
their catch to buy rice which
is shared among the members
of the tribe. The journalist
David, who stayed with
them while they fished and
sold the eels, observed that
their lunch which consisted
of rice and some vegetables
had become a real banquet, a
sharing of joy that not even the
banquets in hotels with their
sumptuous food could match.
The act of solidarity enlarges
the community, and cheers
the heart, which is the most
important ingredient in any
celebration.
The banquet organized by
the Aetas encourages sharing
and teaches us to stay away
from lifestyles of consumerism.
God's dream is quite big and
seems impossible to take root
in our society. But we have
to keep alive the dream that
nobody is too poorto share and
nobody is too rich to receive.
In a banquet of excessive food,
only the stomach has its fill; in
a banquet of sharing, even with
simple food, the heart is filled
to the brim. This is the kind of
banquet that God envisions
for his people, as he invites
all of us to participate and to
continue his work in our world.

the image of a banquet. Godis
the king who invites everyone
to the feast of his kingdom.
Many have been called to this
feast and yet many also refuse
to respond to the invitation.
As Christians, are we dressed
for the feast, clothed in the
garment of righteousness (RV
19:8)? May our celebration
of the Eucharist make us
worthy of the invitation that
we received and participate in
God's eternal banquet.
Penitential Act
P — Brethren (brothers and
sisters), let us acknowledge our
sins, and so prepare ourselvesto
celebrate the sacred mysteries.
(Pause)
All — I confess to almighty
God and to you, my brothers
and sisters, that I have greatly
sinned, in my thoughts and
in my words, in what I have
done and in what I have
failed to do, (sirihe your breast)
through my fault, through
my fault, through my most
grievous fault; therefore I ask
Blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all
the Angels and Saints, and
you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord
our God.
P — May almighty God have
mercy on us, forgive us our
sins, and bring us to everlasting
life.
All— Amen.
P —Lord, have mercy.

P—Christ, have mercy.
All — Christ, have mercy.

almighty Father. Lord Jesus
Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord
God, Lamb of God, Son of the

Isaiah pictures the messianic
banquet where God will satisfy
the longings of the human heart
and where there will be no more
death, no more sorrow.
A reading from the Book of
the Prophet Isaiah
ON THIS MOUNTAIN the
Loko of hosts will provide for all
peoples a feast of rich food and
choice wines, juicy, rich food and
pure, choice wines.
On this mountain he will
destroy the veil that veils all

over all nations; he will destroy
death forever. The Lord Gon will
wipe away the tears from every
face; the reproach of his people
he will remove from the whole
earth; for the Loro has spoken
On that day it will be sai
“Behold our God, to whom we
looked to save us! This is the
Loxo for whom we looked let us

‘Second Reading
(Phil 4:12-14, 19-20)
Paul thanks the Christians of
Philippi for their kindness to him.
Although he can cope with any
situation, Paul sees their concern
for him as their sharing in the
‘magnificent riches of Christ.
A reading from the Letter of
Saint Paul to the Philippians
BROTHERS AND SISTERS:IT know how to live in humble
circumstances; I know also how
to live with abundance. In every
circumstance and in all things I
have learned the secret of being
well fed and of going hungry, of
living in abundance and of being
in need. I can do all things in
him who strengthens me. Still,
it was kind of you to share in
my distress.
My God will fully supply
whatever you need, in accord
with his glorious riches in Christ
Jesus. To our God and Father,
glory forever and ever. Amen.
— The word of the Lord.

Christ enlighten the eyes of
our hearts, so that we may

Gospel (Mt22:114)
P — A reading from the holy
Gospel according to Matthew
All — Glory to you, O Lord.
JESUS again in reply spoke to
the chief priests and elders of
the people in parables, saying,
“The kingdom of heaven may
be likened to a king who gave
a wedding feast for his son.
He dispatched his servants to
summon the invited guests to
the feast, but they refused to
come. A second time he sent
other servants, saying, ‘Tell
those invited: “Behold, I have
prepared my banquet, my calves
and fattened cattle are killed,
and everything is ready; come
to the feast.” ’ Some ignored
the invitation and went away,
one to his farm, another to his
business. The rest laid hold of
ervants, mistreated them,
and killed them. The king was
enraged and sent his troops,
destroyed those murderers,
and burned their city. “Then
he said to his servants, ‘The
feast is ready, but those who
were invited were not worthy
to come. Go out, therefore, into
the main roads and invite to
the feast whomever you find.’
The servants went out into the
streets and gathered all they
found, bad and good alike, and
the hall was filled with guests.
“But when the king came in
tomeet the guests, he sawaman
there not dressed in a wedding
garment. The king said to him,
“My friend, how is it that you
came in here without a wedding
garment?’ But he was reduced
to silence. Then the king said to
his attendants, ‘Bind his hands
and feet, and cast him into the
darkness outside, where there
will be wailing and grinding of
teeth.’ Many are invited, but few
are chosen.”
—The Gospel of the Lord.
All — Praise to you, Lord
Jesus Christ.
Homily (Sif)
Profession of Faith (Stond)
All — I believe in one God, the
Father almighty, maker of heaven
and earth, ofall things visible and
invisible,
I believe in one Lord Jesus
Christ, the Only Begotten Son
of God, born of the Father
before all ages. God from God,
Light from Light, true God from
true God, begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father;
him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
‘he came down from heaven,
(at the words that follow, mp to and
including and became man, all bore)
and by the Holy Spirit was
incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and
became man.
For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate, he suffered
death and was buried, and
rose again on the third day in
accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of the
Father. He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
T believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life, who
from the Father and the
Son, who with the Father and the
Son is adored and glorified, who
has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic,
and apostolic Church. I confess
‘one baptism for the forgiveness
of sins and | look forward to the
resurrection of the dead and the
life of the world to come. Amen.
