“For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ
also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to
follow in His steps.” (1 Peter 2:21 NASB)
First published in 1896, “In His Steps” written by Charles
M. Sheldon has sold more than fifty million copies and is
one of the best selling books of all time. The full title of
the book is “In His Steps: What Would Jesus Do?” In
recent years the book spawned the W.W.J.D. bracelet
which became a popular reminder when being worn to
simply ask in every situation faced, “what would Jesus
do?” But in context of the above text, the primary
“example” that Jesus left us was nothing less than His
own sacrificial death!
Note the context: “For this finds favor (also the same
word for “grace”), if it is for the sake of conscience
toward God a person bears up under sorrow when suffer-
ing unjustly. For what credit is there if, when you sin and
are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if
when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently
endure it, this finds favor (grace) with God.” (1 Peter 2: 19
-20)
To follow Christ’s example is to be willing to endure
unjustified suffering—even defamation and persecu-
tion—with grace and patience.
But that is not all; we must also do it with silence! “And
while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while
suffering, he uttered no threats.” (1 Peter 2:23) “And like
a sheep that is silent before its shearers, so He did not
open His mouth.” (Isaiah 53:7)
It is a natural reaction to want to strike back at one who
has slandered or injured us, especially if such an act was
an insulting response to kindness. But such a “natural”
reaction was not Christ’s reaction. He could have “called
twelve legion of angels” (Matthew 26:53) to His defense,
but He chose to suffer in silence.
Why would He do such a thing? First, if he had not done
so we would have been lost in our sins forever. He “bore
our sins in His body on the cross.” (1 Peter 2:24)
Second, He left us an example that we should “follow in
His steps.” He was not just silent in His sufferings; “He
suffered for you!” If we would really be like Him, we must
be willing to suffer quietly on behalf of others, even when
they are the ones who deserve it. This is acceptable with
God!

A monthly worship service for 18-25-year-olds at Clo-
verdale Baptist Church. Join us and over eight other
churches as we together lift the name of Jesus. Next
meeting is Sun, Sept. 29 at 8pm.
Home Groups
Meets on Thursday nights at the Kim’s at 7pm. A series on
the book of Hebrews called “Fix Your Eyes”.
College Student Encouragers
We are looking for church members who would be willing
to be partnered with an Eastmont college student to
provide encouragement throughout this school year. For

Missions Yard Sale

items can be dropped off following the 2nd service on

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM
Sunday, September 15, at 5:00 p.m., the student ministry
is hosting a one-night event for students and parents
addressing how to walk through seasons of tragedy and
loss. Our guest speaker, Rebecca Ellis, has a compelling
testimony that will challenge and equip believers to
effectively move forward in seasons of grief.
TIMEOUT WEDNESDAYS: HONEST TO GOD
Our next Wednesday message series gives students a
chance to ask their deepest Spiritual questions. Students
are encouraged to submit questions/topics they've either
never been brave enough to ask or have never had any-
one willing to address. In HONEST TO GOD we will learn
that God is big and loving enough to handle our ques-
tions.
SUNDAY NIGHT GROWTH TRACKS
Sunday nights are for small groups. We are currently
offering four small group studies. Each study is video-
and discussion-based. Each group consists of guys and
girls grades 7-12. Call Cleve or Karen for a listing of
courses. Join us Sunday evenings from 5-6 p.m.
FALL RETREAT, OCTOBER 5-6
Fall Retreat will be a "Sisters and Misters" Weekend,
where our guys will spend the evening "camping" in the
woods and our girls will spend the evening "glamping" at
Lake Martin. Costs, details and sign-ups are available on
the Church website and Facebook page
LIFEGROUP LEADERS LUNCHEON
Sunday, September 29, Student Ministry LifeGroup lead-
ers and their spouses are encouraged to attend a lunch-
eon at the home of Brian and Renee Clements. The pur-
pose for this event is to provide training and discuss the
vision for the new church year. There is no cost to
attend. Invitations will be sent soon.
