BABY DUMPING IN MALAYSIA, A NEVER ENDING TRAGEDY

1.0 BABY DUMPING

1.1 WHAT IS BABY DUMPING?

Baby dumping has become a serious phenomenon in Malaysia. According to Oxford

Dictionary, the term baby dumping or infanticide can be defined as “The crime of killing a child
within a year of birth” or “The practice in some societies of killing unwanted children soon after
birth” (Oxford Dictionaries, 2014). The inhumane behaviour of dumping newborn babies at
inappropriate places such as toilets and junkyards has led to a heinous crime. The statistics
of the crime is escalating through out the years despite various steps taken by the government
and society at large to overcome this issue. Normally, baby dumping is the act of mostly
teenagers and young adults in order to get rid of the unplanned newborn babies. Nowadays,
it has become a serious social problem in our country because the number of baby dumping
cases in our country keep increasing year by year while it should not happen in our country
as Malaysia holds the image of Muslim nation.

1.2 HOW DID THE ATTITUDE OF DUMPING NEWBORN BABY INITIATES?

To begin with, infanticide is an effect of unprotected sex before

marriage without any planning, unreported rape cases, sex before
marriage and also prostitution. When the activities is carried out
without any planning or precaution, the product, which is the
unwanted newborn babies will be thrown away for most cases due
to embarrassment and irresponsibility of the perpetrators since
most of the perpetrators are teenagers and young adults.
According to a 2015 survey backed by the health ministry, 35% of
female youth believed that having sex for the first time will not led
to pregnancy (Kaler, 2018). Plus, a research has shown that an
average of 18,000 teenage girls in Malaysia get pregnant each
year, and 25% of the number (4,500) involve pregnancy out of
wedlock (Said, 2019). So, what is the main or actual reason on
why the youth are the main perpetrators of baby dumping?

2.0 FACTORS THAT CAUSE BABY DUMPING TO REVOLVE AROUND

TEENAGERS

2.1 LACKS OF SEX EDUCATION FROM SCHOOL AND HOME

Gaining a new knowledge from time to time is actually a fun thing to do, especially if we are
free to learn about anything without being restricted. However, the education system in
Malaysia lacks on the idea on why sex education should be exposed to the youth at early
stage. Usually, sex education is being taught in school at the age of 15 to 17 which is quite
late since some female youth starts to expose to sex at the average age of 12 without knowing
the bad consequences. Somehow, other than school, receiving sex education from home (our
parents) is important too since both parties are responsible towards the education of the
children.

2.2 LACK OF PARENTAL CARE SUPERVISION

To only teach the children about sex education is not enough due to the fact that the kids,
specifically teenagers might get themselves involve in free sex due to the influence from their
peers. By monitoring the kids behaviour and the people they befriend with, the parents can
protect their kids from doing things that can bring unpleasant outcome. Thus, parental care
supervision are very important in preventing the youth to socialize with the wrong people at
the wrong place.

2.3 POOR APLICATION OF RELIGIOUS KNOWLEDGE

Not every person like to be called ‘religious’ and to most people, they only prefer to know the
basics of their religion. For Muslims, we as a follower are prohibited to do sex out of wedlock
though some of the followers deviate from the straight path and get themselves involve in sex.
The path they choose might led them to have a child out of wedlock. Due to poor application
of religious knowledge, they then choose to dump the baby instead of being responsible
towards the child.

3.0 BABY DUMPING IS A HEINOUS CRIME

3.1 NUMBER OF BABY DUMPING CASES INCREASE FROM 2013 TO 2015

To involve in a pregnancy out

of wedlock is an
embarrassment for every
female youth. Thus, the mixed
feeling of guilt and
embarrassment has led the
perpetrators to dump the baby
which is considered as a
heinous crime. Why do baby
dumping is considered as a
heinous crime? From 2013 to
2015, the amount of baby
dumping cases increasing
from year to year which is 90,
103 and 111 respectively (Lim,
2017).
Figure 3. 1 Number of Baby Dumping Cases

And during these three

consecutive years, the
amount of babies found dead
are greater than the ones that
are still alive. The pathetic
situation has surely made us
all feel bad for the innocent
babies, but the situation is so
Table 3. 1 Numbers of dumped babies found

much more than what we think. The common places babies were found dumped from 2010 to
2018 are homes, toilets and garbage sites which the number of dumped babies are 266, 108
and 89 respectively (Jr, 2019). Try to imagine the fate of the innocent child that has been killed
and placed at dirty places while they are the one we should cherish the most. Is there really
no other way to get rid of the baby?

4.0 EFFECTS OF BABY DUMPING

4.1 DISORDER MENTAL AND EMOTION NERVOUS AND GUILT

Baby disposal effect to individuals is individual will experience disorder mental and emotion
nervous and guilt. They will oftenly remember the crime that they have commit. Perhaps they
doing said matter because has to only to close ashamed and not want to look after baby.

4.2 BAD IMPACT TO FAMILY IMAGE

These crimes will have a negative impact towards the image of the family. Criticism will be
dealt with, especially towards the parents. For sure, parents are ashamed of having child that
involve in baby dumping since their child had a baby out of wedlock and being irresponsible
towards their mistake by commiting a heinous crime .

5.0 WAYS TO REDUCE THE NUMBER BABY DUMPING CASES

5.1 PARENTS

5.1.1 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Parents should cultivate their child with religious studies since it will help them to prevent themselves
from being involved with toxic society. Child should be exposed to religious studies since little so that
they could differentiate what is good and bad for them.

5.1.2 OBSERVE CHILDREN’S ACTIVITY

By monitoring the kids behaviour and the people they befriend with, the parents can protect
their kids from doing things that can bring unpleasant outcome. Teenagers tends to get
influenced easily, therefore, parents must observe their children activity to avoid them from
toxic environment.

5.2 SCHOOL

5.2.1 SEX EDUCATION

Sex education prepares children and young people to become healthy and sexually responsible adults.
Teacher can teach the students about his or her body, benefits of responsible relationship, the effect
of unplanned and unprotected sex.

5.2.2 TALK TO RAISE AWARENESS AMONG STUDENT

The school should organize more talks and encourage more students to join to educate them with the
knowledge of sex education and the effect of baby dumping to themselves, the community and the
country to create awareness among the teenagers about baby dumping and free sex.

5.3 GOVERNMENT

5.3.1 PROVIDE HELP TO THOSE WITH UNWANTED PREGNANCY

Those with unwanted pregnancy, especially teenagers, often found themselves, in a state of confusion
and despair, and see baby dumping as a quick solution. Therefore, the government played the main
role to help the unfortunate teenagers by providing a centre that care for their welfare.

5.3.2 BABY HATCH

Actually, if the perpetrators decided to get rid of the baby, they could have abandon the child
at a baby hatch anonymously instead of killing or placing them at nauseating places. According
to Wikipedia , baby hatch or baby box is a place where people (typically mothers) can bring
babies, usually newborn, and abandon them anonymously in a safe place to be found and
cared for.

Figure 5. 1 Baby Hatch

In Malaysia, the first baby hatch has been

introduced in 2009 by OrphanCare, and up to
this year, there are already 12 baby hatches
around Malaysia. However, the baby hatch is
not available at every states of Malaysia
which might cause baby dumping to become
more rampant at certain states. Somehow,
even though there are one or more baby
hatch in a state such as Selangor, the number
of baby dumping cases are still one of the
highest. Based on The Ministry of Women,
Family and Community Development,
abbreviated KPWKM, Selangor is recorded
as the state with the highest number of baby
dumping cases in 2017 even though there are
2 out of 12 baby hatch in Malaysia at
Selangor.

BABY DUMPING IN MALAYSIA, A NEVER ENDING TRAGEDY

6.0 CONCLUSION

Baby dumping is the act of those irresponsible human who dump their babies who are younger
than 12 months in the public toilet, garbage bin or even the jungle. It has become a serious
social problem in our country because the number of baby dumping cases in our country keep
increasing year by year. Majority of the people who involved in baby dumping cases are
teenagers. This happens when teenagers have unprotected sex before marriage without any
planning, unreported rape cases, sex before marriage and also prostitution. After they have
unprotected sex, they feel very pressure when they think that the baby might become a burden
to them where they are not ready to take care of the baby. They are unable to make a correct
decision. Immature mind of the teenagers will make them to think that the best solution is to
throw the baby away because they might get rejection from their parents. Some of the boys
might deny their actions because they are worried that people will look down on them. There
are too many factors that can lead to baby dumping cases. Literally, baby dumping shows a
bad image to the society and it will affect our country’s growth where people other countries
will look down on our country. Investors will never dare to invest in a country with a lot of social
problems like this.It can also affect the reputation of our country (Noordin, 2018).
