Valerie Belin - Painted Ladies

Xavier Barral 2019 ISBN 9782365112338 Acqn 29608
Hb 23x28cm 88pp 28ills £70

In a signed and numbered edition of 800 copies, Painted Ladies gathers a series of portraits of
women made by Valerie Belin in 2017. Each woman is portrayed made-up - revealing the traces
of a brush used to paint and make-up. Brushes and pigments evoke tribal painting; these
photographs seem to result from initiation rites. With an absent look, each woman distinguishes
herself by her pictorial style inscribing the portrait in a form of abstraction. With an obsessive
desire to appropriate reality, Valerie Belin focuses her lens on the surface of beings to better
reveal their density and enigmatic character. Her work, conceived in series, is based on a subtle
play of repetitions and variations, giving to her images a minimalist rigor. Her photographs appear
both flat and sculptural, two-dimensional and in volume.

Wright Morris - L'Essence Du Visible

Xavier Barral 2019 ISBN 9782365112260 Acqn 29609
Hb 19x26cm 204pp 160ills £44.50
Text in French

Wright Morris (1910-1998) was a renowned writer and photographer who travelled the Great
Plains of the Midwest during the 1930's. This first monograph in French coincides with the first
important exhibition in France at the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation in Paris. He photographs
American rural life inspired by the realism of authors and photographers of the Great Depression
such as John Steinbeck and Walker Evans. Devoid of figures, his photographs depict everyday
objects and atmosphere. Morris's poetic images exist in a fictional narrative, yet reference
documentary style.

Ludovic Careme - Bresils. Sao Paolo

Xavier Barral 2019 ISBN 9782365112505 Acqn 29730
Hb 19x24cm 124pp 60ills £37

French photographer Ludovic Careme has been living and photographing in Brazil for over ten
years. In this publication, Careme shares an uncompromising portrait of Brazil today. He has
focused his lens on the city of Sao Paulo and more particularly on the inhabitants of the favela
Agua Branca made of poor workers trapped between constant harassment by the police and the
impossibility of finding accommodation, despite the fact that they are working. His powerful
portraits testify to an exclusion of part of the population and of the gigantic social gaps that keep
increasing. Wandering the city, he also documents the moradores da rua, homeless people
disappearing on sidewalks in the middle of abandoned buildings in the city centre of Sao Paulo.
